Let's face it... anti-culture is everywhere today. What are your predictions about the future of culture itself ? Why is it loosing the battle ? What can we do to save it ?

You go to the disco, you are in a good mood. You drink, have sex with two girls you see the first time in your life, swallow an LSD pill...

OR

You do things like going to the museum, educating yourself, do sports...

So I'm presuming that the first of the two options is 'anti-culture?'

It seems a little difficult to define.

QUOTE(Wikipedia)
Culture has been called "the way of life for an entire society." As such, it includes codes of manners, dress, language, religion, rituals, norms of behaviour and systems of belief.

This is Wikipedia. I think it's clear what I'm talking about. I'm talking about low morals we have today.

I will make a fiew examples...

About half of a year ago, I was in the bus, sitting. Almost all the sitting places were taken. On the next stop, more peopel come in, and most of them have nowhere to sit. I see an old woman, get up to let her take my place, make two steps forward. Shee moves to the free chair, and suddenly stops. I am confused, I look around and see a 2025 year old guy sitting in that place. I'm annoyed, I come up to him and say quite loud "I made this place free for a woman". He pretends not to hear me, but it can be seen taht he blushes. I decided not to make a fuss and leave him blushing, as everybody looks at him.

I hear a lot of people talking while simply walking down the street. I don't know them. I hear some peopel sometimes use swearing words, some people's talk is 50% of swearing words.

Interesting to notice, that some really intellectual people (I know only one personally, so make this conclusion taht he's not the only one) swear and make "cool" statements just to look "cool". I would say it's not only immaturity, it's also anti-cilture. Being smart is one thing, and being wise is a different one.

Some people actually brag about how they were vometing after getting horribly drunk. I heard 18-20 year olds doing that.

Or maybe I tell only what I see in my little country and I should visit other countries ?

Its probably cause people just think for themselves. Or what they have to do to look cool.

Yea, stuff like this is what truly is F-ing up countries like America Down. And it's our generation that contributes to this the most. We are so spoiled with lots of delicacies and technology that we become lazy, reckless, and thus our morals (doesn't necessarily have to be religious ones) go down. A while ago, I made a list of just a few of many many examples of why our country, as well as many others, are going down.

A long time ago, when there's a stand where you can pick up newspapers on the street, there would be a little bucket next to it's side and whenever someone picks a newspaper up, they would drop a quarter in. Almost nobody would steal. Whereas if you did it today, there's bound to be tons of people who would be like "Oooh, free newspaper!" or something like that and just take a newspaper without paying for it.

I never understood the whole counter culture thing myself. The whole drug scene never appealed to me. Why freak your life up with drugs? I was talking to Nuke earlier today and he mentioned something about "If you can't enjoy your life without chemical enhancements, you have a sad life". I have to agree with him 100% right there. I can go find a video game, a sport, even a person and just be with them and have fun. I don't need drugs to alter my way of life. I should get off this drug talk, I dont think this is what the topic is about. Now I forgot my point. Oh well.

I think its just the fact that everything changes. Long time ago fat women's were considered pretty, becuase they were well fed and etc, now fat women's are the most ugliest thing in the world. I mean back in the world days people use to burn christians, and suddenly Constantine adopts christianity as his religion, then everyone became christians.

Actually what I said didnt make since, well what I want to say is there has always been people like that, expect the enviroment has changed now the way they act change according to the new enviroment... I mean there have always been theifs, but now they adapted to the new enviroment and became hackers. You dont hear about a famous cat-bugler or something of that sort, you hear about some new virus thats running around or something of that sort.

You know how it was in the USSR in the 70s ? In public transport, you come in, there is a little box with tickets. You can pull out a ticket without paying, but you can pay if you want. And you know what ? Most people payed.

I have a poor (in the brain, I mean) classmate - if he sees something for free (let's say - food, for example) he will eat until he pukes (OK, maybe I exaggerated a bit, but he wil leat untill he is "full"). Sad, huh ?

True. But how can you explain such thing as morals to a peorson with low morals ? You will simply talk on different languages.

I think this should be cured from the early childhood. British conservativness might pay off wink.gif

You have a point there. Yes, all that we see today is just a modification of what was in the past. But here's a thing that's really new: people don't seek knoledge. If in old times, peasants spent all their money to educate their children so they don't have to be farmers for the rest of their life, now people laugh at intelligence. Look at our music - it's degrading. People seek more primitive things today, because they are too stupid to understand the complex ones.

I think we were spoiled by technology and intelligence.

Things are worse in Britain actually. I don't know why there's still this prevailing attitude that we're all conservatives in Britain. Socially, it is a very liberal country, and a lot of people of my generation and the one just before it could be described as 'loose.'

Jammed mentioned earlier that he's heard 18-20 year olds boasting about getting drunk and vomiting from it. Well, in Britain it's 14-16 year olds doing the same thing.

Attitudes towards sex are also getting a lot more liberal. There are even 12 year-old mothers in some more deprived areas. Contraception is provided for free by the government, including the morning-after pill and condoms, but it doesn't stop people from being idiots.

I think that what we can say is that cultural values are changing, not that there is a deliberate, widepsread counter-culture movement. Those of us who have been brought up in quite a 'traditional' way find the new attitudes debauched and so on, but we have to learn to accept them. After all, surely we are entitled to choice in what we do?

I prefer to lead by example rather than tell people what to do.

Yes, I mentioned 18-20 year olds because it was the first fact that came into my mind. But when 18-20 year olds do that, it's much worser when 14-16 year olds do that. My logics:
-In 18-20 you should be more mature than you were in your teen years.
-When you're 14-16 alcohol is kinda new, "cool", and looks "mature". So I think that getting drunk when you're 14-16 is just like having that age when you grow, voice changes and other things. You just should try it out, and stop (Let's face it - a majority of people tryed alcohol in that age).

Thank you for doing what I forgot - mentioning sex. Spreading condoms and other measures that are taken now are mostly useless, I think. (From what I see getting done in my country).

In my opinion, if we accept something that's lower than we are every time, we will degrade in general. I'm not saying to be radical to mentally unhealthy people, or any other radical thing.

Well, I guess I can't think of an example out of hand but, in my experience, telling someone what to do makes them resentful and more likely to defy you.

I think that people who are simply misguided and undecided are more likely to follow an example if you set it, than those who actively disdain what you do.

What is an "example". It's an action that should show others how to act. I think it's just like trying to show how to be intelligent to a stupid person. The stupid one is just too different to understand why are you doing what you are doing. If the person is misguided, but smart enough to understand you, yes, I agree - he will follow. But don't count on stupid people doing that.

Why exactly do you have to free a seat for an old woman. It doesn't mean you're being rude not to let "her" a seat. If you got there first ( as in, sitting there and the old woman came to you while you were sitting, not as in old woman was going there but you took it first by running there ) You have the right to keep that seat.

I do not know why it is saying "counter culture" or "anti-culture". It's a bit of lack of language the way I see. Culture naturally changes, and theres no way you can stop it. ( Unless the whole world comes astop, and plunges into stagnation and modern dark age as I call it. )

WHAT IS SMART AND STUPID? HOW DO YOU DEFINE SMART AND STUPID? Are you stupid because you act like an idiot? I've seen college professors act like an idiot. Bush is an idiot. But he is probably smarter than you. Smart and Stupid. Are they stupid because they think different from you? No.
They can contradict you in the same way. If you cannot accept our way, you are stupid. Thats what you're saying, in a simplified manner. They just cannot accept that logic. Do you know why there are jobs? Because people dont work for people who cannot give them profit. Do you know why thousands of laws are passed each and everyday? Do you know why acts and bureaucrastic things come up all the time and you feel as if the government are turning against you? I don't either. IF you don't know their mind inside and out, you probably will never convince them into following you.

About the professor - he acts not like an idiot. He just acts not like others, wich you percepted as idiocy.

You can be forever tolerant to people about their intellect. But some people are just more sophisticated (intellectually) than others. Smart = IQ test. A smart person can think about things a stupid one is not able to. Smart people MOVE the world forward. A world that consists of stupid people. Please do not mix Wise with Smart. Smart people created a nuclear bomb. But they were not wise when they dropped it on the Japaneese.

In case you didn't know, it is common courtesy to let elders take your seat on a bus, this is very common knowledge and I guess it didn't reach you for some reason. Not everyone has this "fend for yourself" mentality that you and many others seem to have. Yes he had the right to that seat, but he was willing to let it go for an elder woman. If everyone lived for only themselves the world wouldn't work, it's as simple as that.

Being intelligent is not having a lot of knowledge, being intelligent is using that knowledge well. Bush may know more about politics then a high schooler, that's nice, it doesn't stop him from being a moron. As an adult you are set to a standard of how intelligent you should be in our society. A child may not make a good parent, but that's because he/she is a child, it's as simple as that. They can be very intelligent children, but that doesn't stop them from being children. An adult may know more than a child, but the way we compare it is if the child became an adult, would he/she be as intelligent as the other adult? As a president, you must compare Bush to other presidents, not children. To compare Bush to children is like comparing a fireman to a plumber. They have nothing to do with each other. In conclusion you can be more idiotic than another, even if you know more facts than them.
