Staredit Network -> Lite Discussion -> Art versus the Artist
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DevliN on 2006-08-07 at 20:20:48
Now I know this may not be that huge, but I figured it should garner some mindful discussion.

I was reading a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine and found an article about Mel Gibson's recent scandal. For those of you who don't know, he was arrsted for drunk driving and made some anti-semitic remarks to a Jewish police officer (as well as calling a female officer "sugar tits," but that's a different story).

For more info, check http://in.rediff.com/movies/2006/aug/01mel.htm for a quick overview.

Anyways, despite recently making a public apology for his actions under the influence of alcohol, many people in the Jewish community as well as non-Jews are calling for a boycott of all things Mel Gibson. Even Barbara Walters (of the View) says she wont be seeig any more Gibson films.

Is this is a bit much? I mean this is a perfect example of where the artist and the art need to be separated. His remarks were horrible, but that doesn't mean his work should suffer. Its true that The Passion of the Christ completely pissed off the Jewish community, but his other films have nothing dealing with anti-semitism or religion in general. His next film, Apocalypto, has nothign to do with Christians or Jews, and even that is being boycotted.

I just think people are taking this way too far. His movies are not that bad, and the fact that many feel his work needs to suffer because of this sucks for lack of a better word.

If you loved all of Van Gogh's paintings and then one day found out he was a nazi (a bit extreme, I know, but I couldn't think of a more contemporary artist that almost every one would know), would your opinion of his art change because they were paintings made by a Nazi?

Well, I wouldn't really like an artist like that, just his art work. But, It would change my opinion on the person, but his art will not be affected by it, unless there is racist stuff in the drawing, or anything like that..

Of course it is stupid to attack his art. But huge money circulate around it, so probably it's profitable for somebody to do so, and to organize it all...People know what a monster Hitler was, but do not forget what a wonderful orator he was.

And if you want to be technical, he loved kids and animals a lot and tried to make some sort of social reform to aid Aryan kids and pets. I have family members who survived the holocaust, but I still have to say Hitler was one of the best leaders out there. He was an excellent orator, he knew how to manipulate his people, and he managed to almost succeed in an "ethnic cleansing." Jokes aside, that's talented. I think he's also a complete monster for doing what he did, but I'll give him credit for being a good leader with bad morals.

And let us not forget, Hitler was a failed artist! tongue.gif

Well people tend to think that artists put a part of themselves in each one of thier work. This might or might not be true however I can understand how the community feels and thier actions against Mel Gibson.

If Van Gogh did turn out to be a Nazi I would probolly not see his work. Artwork is reflected upon the Artist.

But Mel Gibson isn't just an anti-semitic illegitimate child... he's also a stupid, pretentious anti-semitic illegitimate child.

But the fact is that if you go see his film, you're putting money in his pocket (which I'm sure would end up funding some white supremacist group). But seriously, who wants to schlub out money to see a Mel Gibson film anyways? Not only does it put money in the pocket of an idiot, it's also a tremendous waste of time (IE, there are alot better movies out there) and some of them don't feature complete schmucks!

The moral of the story is go watch something better.

Actually I happened to like Braveheart and Apocalypto seems promising to me. He's got so much money that I doubt an extra $10 from me will make much of a difference anyway (and to be perfectly honest, I haven't paid to see a movie in a theater in 6 months so he'd get jack from me either way).

He will pay the price for being a drunk fool. End of story.

Thanks for your opinion, but I like Mel Gibson movies! I don't think they are wastes of time, either. And as if my $9 makes a difference anyway =\

Micheal Jackson liked kids too.

When I get older I'm gona make a movie called "Passion of the Jew" on about how Jewish community freaks up this planet. First of all, they're starting a war over a couple of soldiers, the real reason is that they have too much military equipment and it takes a lot of money to maintain it so they just want to shoot a few rockets, kill a few soldiers and they save a lot of money, we all know jews are greedy like hell. Even Hitler managed to develope a hatred towards them in his life, and no, i don't believe it was because they didn't want to buy some paintings, its because the way they treated him, can you imagine jews were even worse than they are now? Hitler just taught them a lesson but now again they act the same as they did before WWII. They act all proud and confident saying they won't forgive Mel Gibson and will boycott him, how come you didn't act all proud and confident during WWII? You were just hiding all around the world instead of fight Hitler. There is a story I heard once, it was kept in secret and I don't know myself if it's true but I heard that before Hitler killed all those Jews he wanted to sell them to the American Jews so he has more money for the war, his main reason for war wasn't because he wanted to kill some Jews, it was because he wanted power. Guess what, after the American Jews didn't want to buy the European Jews, wanna guess why? Because their money is more important to them than ANYTHING. I used to work as a Closet Installer for the Container Store in Chicago and 90% of my clients were either jewish or black, guess what, I NEVER got a tip when working at a jewish house, even black people gave me tips, but NEVER i got a tip in a Jewish house.

Are you being sarcastic, or are you really that racist? I'll take it that you're really racist.

Well first off, you obviously don't know what a "passion play" is so right off the bat you're completely off base. Secondly, it is jokingly said that Jews run hollywood, so it would never be made.

First of all, that is Israel, not the Jewish community. Secondly, America keeps sending Israel military equipment because they've used a lot of it, so the idea that they'd be shooting it willy-nilly is proposterous.

Yes I can imagine that actually. And then I can realize how flawed your argument is.

So he then taught some of my relatives a lesson, and killing millions must have been justifiable, right? Oh yeah, I'm Jewish.

Jews couldn't fight Hitler in WW2, they were being slaughtered. They had to hide to survive. You can't seriously be this narrow-minded.

That is absolutely retarded.

In my experience, Jews tip better than anyone else. And to be technical, its not their greed that made a lot of them rich in America, its the fact that they allow usury and Catholics don't. So while Jew loaned money and charged interest to turn a profit, Catholics would loan and only get back what the dished out.

how could you take a discussion about mel gibsons drunkeness and make it into how you hate jews....

You have no idea what the hell you are talking about do you... Israel has been harassed by almost all countries surrounding it. They have non stop terrorist bombings and the governments from where the terrorists come from seem to take no action against it. The reason of why they are starting a war is for protection of the entire country, it is not for the lives of the soldiers but it is setting an example to all terrorists and foriegn governments not to screw with them.

Before criticising some other country and a whole race of people you should take a look at your own government.

Yes.

It's like when a dog bites someone. Even if it's just once, you know that dog is forever capable of it. You can never really completely trust them again.

Until people evolve past the level of animals (hasn't happened yet), they'll always have it in them to do something once they show they can do it at least once. Conditioning and such can help, but it'll always still by in them in some shape or form.

As much as I want to believe there's hope for people... there really isn't. Not until people can be changed fundamentally in some way. In a performance-centric world, you just can't afford liabilities.

Hope he waves hi to Martha Stewart and Michael Jackson on his way down.

I actually watched a vin diesel movie because I learned he was an avid DND master. But then quickly remembered why I don't watch movies with vin diesel...

I suppose the same could work the opposite way for some people.

Ask yourself "why would they harrass Israel?" And you'll see the are not entirely with out fault in their predicament.

I was that same way when I saw him on Conan, explaining that he was a Drow Witchhunter (I believe). Excellent stuff.

And yeah you're right, in the end its still a Vin Diesel flick.

"Artists use lies to tell the truth while politicians use them to cover it up."

Mel Gibson is the one person in Hollywood crazier than Tom Cruise.
