i'm trying to make a battle cruiser with a vulture as a turret. how do i do it

what you are trying to achieve is believed to be hardcoded. maybe have a look and see how the tank base and turret are related. same as the turret base and the turret top.

it ain't hardcoded at all 
copy tank turret to an empty spot and change its graphic to vulture.
then add that unit to your battlecruisers subunit field and whola
