Defense of the Ancients

Yes, it's true. Somebody finally decides to make a DotA for StarCraft (and finish it, too!)

Progress

Terrain
Terrain is
100% complete, but I'm looking for somebody else to do terrain (I'm not very good at it).

Ideas
About
50%, this map will be very complex and I'm still thinking of ways to make it uber.

Triggers
About
2%. Haven't gotten much done, and there will be tons and tons of triggers for the skill tree.

Introduction

Two sides, the Night Elf Sentinel, with the Tree of Life, and the Undead Scourge, with Necropolis. There are 3 pathways between the two sides, along with many merchants, creatures, and secret pathways in between.

Specifications

Players
6

Tileset
Jungle

Size
256x256

Features

Player Interface

There are 2 forces, each with 3 players. Each player will be able to choose one out of five or six heroes. Level up the hero, choose your spells and powerups, buy weapons, kill the opposing force.

What's new in your map?

Two words. Skill Tree.
Each hero will be given a set of 6 or 7 skills (depending on the hero). After every level up, they will be allowed to level up a skill of their choice. Different skills lead paths to other skills. Each skill will have a max level of 5, except for "ultimate" skills, which are only available at the max level of the character, which will be 20 or 30.

Author's Notes

[8/9/06]
This is an extremely long term project. I don't expect a Beta to be released until the end of this year or the beginning of next.

[8/10/06]
This project will be postponed until either:
- I finish StarCraft: Hybrid Theory
. . . or . . .
- I find somebody to help me make the terrain.

[8/11/06]
For you people that don't read, this is NOT an exact copy of DotA, for that is impossible, but it will be as close as I can possibly make it.

Made with Production Template (keep this link to help propagate this template or you get smitten!)

Well, I'm not really gonna call it DotA, cause I'm still thinkin of an appropriate title, but it's going to be a "copy" of it, I guess.

I've been thinking about making a DotA for Starcraft as well but I decided not do to it. I've been playing DotA for quite a long time and I guess I can say I'm not that bad at all. There are three reasons why I didn't want to make it myself and why I think yours will also not work:
1) In-depth Skills: While DotA also has a lot of 'simple' skills like the usual 300 damage nuke, the really interesting skills are complicated in triggering, effect and usage. I'm rather sure that you will not be able to make such in-depth skills and keep simplicity in using them.
2) Gameplay: The most important thing about DotA is of course the fantastic gameplay. Last hitting creeps, denying, positioning, etc. The gameplay is quite fast but also quite simple in use. With 2 clicks (ie: first select skill, then target) max you use a skill while still having control over your own hero and be able to dodge all kinds of bad stuff. You got towers who attack you when you are attacking one of their heroes (in fact, there's a complete priority list of which he'll attack first). Creeps have their own AI, which is more complicated then you might think at first sight. Et cetera.
3) Stats: A VERY important thing are the different items, abilities and stats. How are you going to implent movespeed? I think you can't, and it's an important part of the hero, and thereby of the game. Same goes for attack speed, attack animation, range, health regen, mana regen, evasion, etc.

Don't take this personal or whatever, but I just don't think you'll be able to finish a product which has something to do with DotA. I could be wrong though, and to be honest I really hope that you will prove me wrong.

I've got one question: I assume you will use Virtual Hitpoints?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by ShizTheresABear on 2006-08-10 at 07:01:26
Yes, virtual HP is a must.

Also, I know I can't completely duplicate a map as good as DotA, only because of the fact that WarCraft 3 map making is far more complex than StarCraft. I will try my best to have good enough skills with some simplicity to them, and also to have the gameplay match DotA on WC3 as much as possible. It's not going to be easy, and I will most likely require some assistance.

Yeah, and it's going by really good.

I like the heros, but I don't think it will be possible...

Hey.... i've never played DotA so im not entirely sure how it goes... but if you want me to help out with spells and stuff i will, all you'll need to do is copy the triggers over. If you keep your eyes on Element Duelz soon you'll be seeing some more screenshots of spells so you'll know the quality of spells i can do. Can you please explain to me what makes turning the WC3 game of DotA i think it is... into a SC Version? Like to me it didn't sound to be too hard... but yeah GL with it.

So far bushido shogun warz is the best dota for sc map, you should check it out in the dldb strategic warfare map. Anyway You're not the best map maker but you are 1 of the map makers who completes their maps, so I have faith in you. Goodluck.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade here, but the DotA "genre" (AoS etc) actually originates from a StarCraft map. I can't remember it's name, since it's very old, but it's true. So basically you're doing an SC remake of a WC3 remake of an SC original. Sounds pretty odd to me. No offense meant though, as we need all the high-quality maps we can get and I won't pass judgement on the particular map until I've played it, of course.

I am fully aware that DotA was a remake of AoS (I always tell my friends at school that). The only difference is, AoS is very, very basic, most likely only because of the limitations of StarCraft map making.

I plan to embark on a RPG next (This really isn't an RPG...but it has some more typical RPG features like leveling and skills) I'd be willing to do terrain and maybe trigger work along with my own ideas..I've never plays AoS soooo.. I wouldn't know exactly what your looking for but I can do triggers and the terrain...I can give you a terrain sample so you can decide if you want to work on it [Zell_II@useast] just whisper me and I'll get right to it, as for availability you could PM me and I'll tell you when I'll be available. Is "AoS" Aeon of Strife?..I just relized that...I've played that, now I think I know were this is going. This potentially could be a VERY fun map.

Yes, AoS-type maps are usually always fun if they're well made. It's great that you'll be able to possibly work on some terrain, and I'll try to contact you as soon as I can.
