How many text messages could you have if you used the max of everything else, (units, switches, locations)

ya, relatively very few strings left. not sure if kupo actually checked it or not, but its roughly under 400.

can someone refresh my memory, if you don't change the unit name, you don't 'use' a string?

Oh wait, you mean after renaming every unit, renaming every switch, etc?

6 for map name, description, forces.
256 for switches
228 for units (all, unused and "hidden" ones included)
256 for locations (including "Anywhere")

So, 1024-746=278.

278 for everything else.

That tutorial is wrong. The string limit is NOT 1024.
Read this.

If you leave the "Use default unit name" box checked, it won't use a custom string.

I thought StarEdit set that limit...

StarEdit won't allow you to make more than 1024, but it's a pointless limit.
If you make your strings large enough you can hit the actual string limit anyway.

Scmdraft2 lets you use the full amount of string space unhindered.

Nope, only SCMDraft2 (and UBE2 if you use the trigger editor) as of right now.
