Metamaterial objects are things that recieve properties based not what they are made up of, but how they are put together. Basically they are things that make electromagnetic radiation do SCIENCE MAGIC!
Bascially, this sort of material can be used to bend light, it has been mathematically theorized that it could bring about objects that would appear invisible to certain frequencies of light. (In six months or less, a team will produce the first case of a toaster size object invisible to radar. Not simply defracting in different directions, but completely invisible, meaning the wave goes in one side and out the other, going around the object in the middle.
Interesting *does research on the scientists for his plan to conquer the world*
Oh yes - they were thinking of creating cloaking devices and such, weren't they?
I read about it in New Scientist.
Omg, I'm going to buy a wraith! Expect them on the market in about a year! Invisibility for everybody. We didn't destroy oursleves with the atomic bomb, so let's try this stuff instead.
Invisible to certain frequencies... that means that there will undoubtedly be another frequency that can detect it.
Well thats only what we have been able to construct so far. Basically they are tiny rings that can make light act opposite the way it should. (Kinda hard to explain) I'm guessing (I don't really know) Is that the varying size in circles would make them alter different frequencies, but altering the shape... Could do something else.

Amen.
Yay for those materials! Explosives invisible to detectors!
As Moose already stated - we are getting closer and closer to our own death. Breakthrough technology is always first used by the military, and only then changed to the civilan's needs.
Yay i could be invinsible if i was one of it! SWEET

Invincible or Invisible make up your mind

LOL
invisible lol
So people cant see it too? Or only radars?

What about lasers and stuff? Wouldn't such "metamaterials" still emit energy and such, thus making them prone to detection via stuff like infrared?
obviously but who carries an infared laser detection around in their purse / wallet / pocket. That would be military thing. Then there is the whole issue of where to scan for them. Slow process most likely.
Its metamaterial. It has infinate possibility. It could be the weight of 0.0000000000000000001². Imagine that. Light as nothing. In fact, lighter than air. And it could be radiation shielded, indestructable, and energy proof. While also having an integrated nuclear explosion device without killing the person inside it. And the person could also be invisible to any type of radars or visible spectrum.
Think about that walking into Manhattan or something. BOOM! doom. End of the world! They would make everyone do that and nobody would die. but the shelters dead and they gotta pee. They'd kill themselves out anyways.
Lithium, I don't even know where to begin trying to understand what you were talking about in your post. For the rest of you, I think you are all taking this a bit too far.
Man, how I just
love sources. They change a dream-on topic into a scientific one
.
While I'm not an huge science expert, this sounds like stuff I've been hearing about for years and gets more and more unscientific every time I hear something about it. In other words, whenever you want a (serious) discussion about subjects like this one,
use sources! Oh and please don't come with a wikipedia article, wikipedia is
not your most trusted source
.
EDIT: I've done a quick google and found this article. I haven't really read it, just browsed through it but it looks very interesting and (very important) with good looking argumentations.
LINK (note: it's in PDF format, if you want the HTML version just google for "Metematerial objects".

Dude, cell phones. They pick up more light frequencies than the human eye (although it might depend on the cell phone, older ones might not). Keep one handy. And a remote control handy to.
Remote transmits infared beam, Cellphone detects it. Trace that combo over an 'invisible person,' and there you go. Just got female dogified, MacGyver style.
ooooh yeah. Didnt think of those. But nowadays who carries a remote with them (dont answer that
)
That's easy, the...
You know what? I'll save you the embaressment.
Anyway, Metamaterails, they sound nice, but I figure they'll take to being used more by scientists than anyone else for the time being. Actually, lots of cool stuff is coming about nowadays. The 21st century is an interesting time to live in...
i personally preffered the 12th century
[/joke]
But yeah there is some "interesting" stuff coming out to say the least
