Report, edit, etc...Posted by assassin_498 on 2004-08-03 at 18:08:05
I just thought of it...and i need ideas, but here are my ideas so far:

Terrain
It will be Installation, and the terrain will consist of many small and large rooms. There will also be traps set all over the castle. I'm not a very good terrain designer, but Ill give it my best shot and try to make the terrain look good smile.gif

Gameplay
The players will NOT choose their units, but they can pick up items and weapons during the game. As said earlier, traps will be set all over the castle, so you have to be careful. Players will gain exp and earn money, but no limited health as you lvl. There will be bosses in some parts of the game.

Story
I dont know yet

Im not a pro mapper (yet anyways tongue.gif) and i might need some help.
Please post your suggestions

For the story, you can always use cliche material, such as the main characters being drunk and romping it up into the castle, only to get separated and such. Or the 'hey lets get some media footage of that ghost thats supposed to haunt this place' bit.

Or, to stray from that, you have some normal pristine events going on, and you somehow wake up in the middle of that castle.

You can try to find MutilatedPuppet on west, though i haven't seen in for awhile, but he made Alone in the Dark series, but......theres a .1% that he'll help you, most likely he will ask you if u have brain or not, or that he could, but he doesn't wants to help you, and if u ask a wrong question such as "Hey Puppet, can I have some ideas?" he'll answer: "Well if you can think of them...yes you can have them".

Anyways, i can help you but i don't like to post ideas on any Forum, better contact me at USWest.

All interactions i have had with Mulitated Puppet have been pleasant ones, maybe that’s just because he considers me to be intelligent (boy was he wrong).

LoL, Anyways explaining how to make a horror map good is very difficult. (i wrote a PM to nozomu trying to recently). Basically what you need to concentrate most on, is not the effects or features, but what mood/emotion your creating for the player. Don't think about "oh i can make puzzles" think what would be freaky and what effects you can use to accomplish that.

Like if you want the player to feel lost in a hallway make the terrain featureless. Like same siding to all the walls.

About That same siding of every wall....it will take a long time on X-tra Editor to get the wall the same with everything else pinch.gif

Yup, Yes it takes a lot of time, but i do it anyway.

And also, set some scary to add a better scary feeling to the game >=)

Well i did that for the entire second floor in house of the haunted (with X-tra) you shouldn't decide not to do things because it will take a little extra work. Also on all the other floors I removed all the computers on the walls. To me it is fine details such as this that i grow to love.

Hmmm... sounds typical I think.

Good..but Time consuming...

good thing with having all the walls the same...you don't want a bunch of §ht like computers and stuff on the walls....You want smooth...straight walls...and at times have a few computers and stuff that you can interact with...

Bad thing :Hours on doing this...especially on Corners..gah who gives chair.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by (U)Bolt_Head on 2004-08-04 at 03:24:22
Corners are not that bad, you can click the top with the high terrain to do each side seperatly. Besides you can do it quickly and when you see it flash by you hit undo a few times to go back to what you wanted it to be. It isn't really that time consuming. I have spent much more time doing things that are less noticed when it comes to mapmaking.

Lot of little things you do to a map make it that much better. For example you see a map that could be great but it lacks the little details that could have made it better. I am making a map tahts in space so use null terrian to act as space(who pays attention to those stars?)and i use jungle terrian to represtent planets that way the person can better see it as a planet instead of some metal thing in space. Taking an extra 5 minutes to add in little features makes a map better. Thats the morale I think?!?!? huh.gif

Hehe i pay attention to those stars ^__^
I think you should use desert terrain. They the most effective and look like an old and rusty castle. Anywayz just dont' use space (my own personal opinion) .. it makes everything looks so new and polished and doesn't have the feeling of maybe your horror rpg is trying to achieve. Installation is a pretty good choice.

P.S. hmm about the stars there are different shining levels and the back ones always move slower when you scroll across the screen ^__^ love watching them move.. so please dont kill those stars !! pinch.gif

Should i use starforge for terrain instead? it looks nice if you use starforge i think. Or at least thats what i heard. Good for terrain but pisses off for the trigs.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-08-04 at 09:37:51
Work with X-Tra then finish with starforge!

Like Surtur said: Sound! Sound do about 50% of the work, scary music with some ARG, NO, MOM!, AHH! Make the player feel extremely scared! The dark do a little work on this, make im feel completely lost, closed, Blind is character. Surprise effects, Such unburrow... or flying thing... Make the Character afraid too, And the best: Close the light in an attack... make the player saying: WTf Is This censored.gif !11 Im died6??? then open the light without the character and make him... appear..

You guys can't steal this idea! MINE!! Or at least... put my name ... happy.gif

I wouldn't use Starforge for the initial terrain, for one, that would take even longer, and also it would limit you in the future, unless you cleverly used SCMDraft 2 and went back over everything you had just done, so that you could use the diamond on it again...

An interesting feature of good horror films in the uncertainity of the characters over the decisions they should take, if you watch a lot, your notice that in most cases any decisions seem to take longer than expected to be made.

Maybe create some story-line to follow, and RP with, maybe have a computer controlled player, who is a member, who just adds those comments you expect in a horror film, not giving the storyline away, but just adding mood and atmosphere to the whole game/map.

If you want the easy method, SCMD2 allows you do to that...

so i should use scmd2 for terrain and xtra for trigs?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Clokr_ on 2004-08-04 at 12:53:50
well, SCMD2 is good with isom terrain, SF is good with square terrain.
