Yeah, so I'm going to be doing a small RPG-type game. This will be a single hero map, for a single player. I'm kind of deciding what kind of healing system to use. Keep in mind the main focus of this map will not be combat, but I can't give too much away. agent.gif

Unlimited Sleep/Spawn
-Player goes to a stationary bed and get a free heal. They can do this as much as they like. There won't be very many healing spots placed in the map. The downside, however, is that the enemies will respawn.

Limited Station/Spawn
-Same as above, except they can only do it once. This means there will definitely be more spots to heal placed around the map.

Limited Stationary Healing
-There are stationary healing spots throughout the map, which the player can only use once. Enemy spawns will probably not be affected.

Limited Item Healing
-Player picks up items, which he can use for a full heal. Enemy spawns will probably not be affected.

Limited Medic Healing Items
-Player picks up items, which he can use for a partial heal by a Medic. Enemy spawns will probably not be affected.

If u want it realistic do the sleep
if u want it mroe gamish realistic items
the rest are basically same thing

Technically, a rest could never heal a full wound in one night. Unless the rest system only healed half way or 3/4ths of the way unless you rested for a really long time, I disagree.

I prefer the Medic idea. That way you can have different strengths of health items by making the Medic disappear after a certain time. I'm doing that for Saiyuki.

Well, my map isn't exactly aiming for realism. You shall see. wink.gif

Depends on the map.

Generally, in indoor RPG's, its better to use heals that can only activate once, to prevent too much back tracking.

For outdoor maps, an inn wouldnt make much sense if you could use it only once, so in that case use the repeating heal.

Medic healing is best saved for spells/items. IMO

When u say item u can save the item right? not just use right away

Yeah, items are picked up and stored in your inventory. I'll probably make a max of 2 or 3 items though, and you'll probably be carrying lots of game-required items. I might mix some the healing types, I'm not too sure what I'll do now.

Last 2 are good ones.

I have always hated unlimited respawn for rpg maps.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mini Moose 2707 on 2004-08-03 at 23:56:02
I rarely use unlimited free healing. That's why I would have the unlimited heal cause enemies to spawn.

I recommend the Medic, it's the best, I've used it before in one of my maps and it worked very well, plus I think the other ideas aren't as interesting. Like said above, medics would allow you to choose how long it would heal you.

I rarely use unlimited free healing.

but he said respawn o_O
meaning if u die u could respawn at an inn or something

Medic is better, you can't heal always instantly.
Maybe Medic and like a couple limited beds and stuff.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Nozomu on 2004-08-04 at 13:37:54
You could always make healing cost experience. That way it's sort of unlimited, but it's not free.

It would probably be more realistic /w unlimited sleep/spawn. But you can also add some medpacks around the map for massing situations smile.gif

Unlimited heals is the easy route. I like limited heals, such as being able to use a certain 5 times, and it might tell you that theres only "x medic packs left" every time you use one.

Whatever you do, do not make it Unlimited Sleep/Spawn. I see this in almost every RPG I play; and it's not a good thing. First off, the characters get reckless and all they do is go back and forth... kill, upgrade, heal. Repeat about 50 times and then they do it over on the next town! These RPG's can't really have too big of a storyline because you're just doing 3 things endlessly. Oh, and these RPGs are very time consuming to play.

I think the best way to do it would either be the Limited Sleep/Spawn, or the Magic Healer with the power of healing. The only downside to the magic healer is that it can only heal certain unit types (bionic). However, it would be a lot better then using items or even unlimited sleeping. (Dependent upon the Character Selection).

The only reason I don't like Items, is that it complicates things. So now if you're including spells and upgrades regularly, you have to have a completely other section in top right or wherever that there is all of the abilities you can do. This generally confuses the player, but if you were able to use items in town it would work fine. Though I doubt you'd want to, since some of your items may be combat related.

I'm not sure what unlimited "spawn," is it like if you die you come back?

If thats the case I don't like to do that. But what I do like to do is have an unlimited respawn with a penalty for dying. Where player must wait like 3 minutes to come back, or must sacrifice a few levels/items.

No, I meant you sleep and ENEMIES spawn. Didn't you read the descriptions? Nothing about reviving was mentioned. This is about healing methods. I changed the poll choices for this. blink.gif

Hmm..
Well, what I say it should be is you go to an inn, a medic appears, and as long as you stay there it heals you.
I hate when you can walk into an inn, fall asleep for, literally, a couple seconds or less, and smehow be completely healed.

The Medic is a nice compromise.

Yes i agree with EzDay2 it would be the best thing for your Rpg

I say limited item...It can be considered very real or very fake in my opinion.

Limited Item Healing - is best, There is no point in others.

Umm...
perhaps you could defend your position, so that MiniMoose has a reason to believe you?
