That tutorial doesn't tell how to do what he asked for.

To make upgrades do more than +1 damage you need to edit the number in the BONUS box when you go to edit the unit's stats. It is next to the place where you edit the unit's damage.

In SCXE it's Scenario > Unit and Hero Settings > Select unit from the Tree > Uncheck use defaults > Edit the BONUS box
