Staredit Network -> UMS Assistance -> How to Center Location on Units and Powerup Health
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Whackamole on 2006-09-05 at 20:31:17
Hey, I'm relatively new to mapmaking and I am making my first real attempt at finishing a map.

I have seen a cool feature in a few maps before, where they make a trigger that masses units to an actual unit and not a location. Looking around this forum, I noticed a topic that mentions centering locations on units, and I figure that this must be how its done. Could someone please explain to me how to do this? I would have asked on that thread, but I figure that wouldn't be a helpful response and I think thats against the rules.

Also, I've played a map before where you were able to attack power ups, more specifically the vespene tank. I've tried changing the powerups settings in Unit and Hero settings, but in game they are still unattackable. Could someone please explain to me how to do this as well?

Thanks

For the center locations, there is a trigger action labled "Move Location". Use that and choose the appropriate unit to center on. To rush, just use the action "order" to attack or patrol to the location. For the powerup thing, I'm pretty sure that you have to just place one of the extra powerups (Vespene sac, vespene tank) and it will automatically have life and is able to be attacked. If you can't find that powerup, you may have to download SCM Draft of Starforge from the downloads database.

With Xtra Editor, SCMdraft2, or StarForge, you can place what are known as the "Xtra Powerups", the mineral chunks and gas tanks that the workers carry. By default they are all non-invincible. They take .5 damage from all attacks.
The "normal" powerups, like the Data Disc, Uraj Crystal, etc. are always invincible, there is no way to attack them.

Thanks a lot for your help guys. However, for the xtra powerups, which i believe are the ones with the different numbered types (Vespene tank 1, vespene tank 2, correct me if I'm wrong) I've tried making create triggers for them, and even directly placing them on the map in the editor. For some reason, on both attempts they did not appear. Any clue as to why that happens? thanks again

I forgot to mention, the X-tra powerups cannot me created during the game with triggers.
If you've preplaced some, make sure that the player you gave them to is actually in the game. Make sure you're actualy playing a Use Map Settings game, they won't appear in any other game type.

There's a short article about powerups here.

The trick to making the xtra powerups appear without the create trigger is to put it in one location and create a move trigger to move the powerup to the desired location.

Damn straight. And they only have .5 dmg dealt to them because they have the "independant" armour flag checked in units.dat smile.gif

Heheh Mini Goose. Noticed by the Webmaster already. How many members are there in this forum?

Anyway, I've got another question. This may be even dumber than the above, but I simply cannot find the trigger that sets Shared Vision. I've played maps where you are forced to share vision with everyone. How is this done? It is a trigger right?

Also, I've been trying to create a regular spawn trigger, with 60 actions in it. Between each spawn I have added a 300,000 millesecond wait, which is supposed to be 5 minutes. 1000x60x5= 300,000. But in game, it waits for about 7 minutes before spawning, which is weird. (this is according to the in-game countdown timer). This isn't a really big problem, but is there a reason that you know of that this would happen?

Thanks a bunch

You need to be using x-tra, and its under "run ai script".

Do that basiclly, and dont mix up "run ai script at location" with that one.

wait uses 'real time,' whereas the countdown timer goes by 'starcraft time.' which at fastest speeds which has a ratio of 3s/2 real-time seconds.

it could also be wait blocks which is a rather complex mapping problem caused by one player with multiple triggers w/ waits running at the same time.

Plus, it's more sensible to use variables (in particular, Death Counters) instead of waits.

Actually, it's Mini_Moose_2707, and IsolatedPurity is the main but inactive webmaster.

The number of registered members is found at the bottom of the forum index page.

Heehee, thanks a lot to all of you. Now I know where to go for help when I need it, and one day, if I ever get good at mapmaking, I'll answer other people's questions.

ADDITION:
Another question, lol.

I put the color symbols in the mission briefing and scenario title of my map. Yet they don't have any color in the game. How do I fix this?

Thanks

Are you using the new colour list (pinned)?

After 1.14 the colors included in X-tra Editor and other map editors are no longer valid. You need to use the new colors here: http://www.staredit.net/index.php?showtopic=33721
Simply copy and paste the square boxes.

ok to center locaton do the trigger....

Trigger
Description:
Center Location
Players:

¤ Center "location name" on unit "the unit u want it on" for "player"
¤ preserve trigger

do not do this for a unit u will have more than 1 with for 1 player. and u have to do this for 1 player at a time.

then to make gas tank and mineral chunks id use SCMDraft you can download it in downloads on this site, hope i was a big help, if u have any questions just PM me and ill awnser or look at tutorials. like this one....
