Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2004-08-05 at 16:31:52
Normally people don't care much about who invented what unless they've staked their ego in it and someone else comes along to try and claim it, or else they stand to lose something of value, monetarily or otherwise. That, or else they're just a twit. I'm guess going to be that twit (don't ask).

Anyway, since I periodically get questions such as "who invented hyper triggers", or "what was the first movie/picture/rpg/lotr/etc. map", "when was map protection discovered", and so on, I've decided there needs to be a definitive source for all this information once and for all.

I propose this thread be just that. Post whatever map ideas, trigger techniques, game glitches, map types, unit tricks, hack discoveries, staredit glitches, etc. that you, or someone else you know, have discovered. To be fair, if there is a legitimate occurence of a discovery independently by two or more seperate people, I'll cite them all for that discovery, though the main credit obviously will go to the first person who discovered it (meaning that chronology is important to making your claim).

Here's the format we'll use (color and style optional):
    Author:
      Person who invented it.
    Source:
Your Discovery.scm/scx (Though optional, this will be important for citing the originator of the idea. File date may be checked.)
    Discoveries/Inventions:
      - Hyper triggers
      - Exploders
      - Map hack detection
      - Toggling player vision
      - Tuxedo Templar is cool
      - so on...
Here's the code for the above if you're lazy:

As you post them, I'll do my best to keep this post updated with each discovery, and you're welcome to get on my case if I don't. So, let's fill er up!

Edit- I'll post mine once I get back on tonight.

I'll post my unit 228+ research here when i'm done. So far i've for 228-370 and 570-1160. The 371-569 gap is getting annoying.

Edit - And I know that the unit #'s go way way up in the thousands. I'm just opening the doors for people.

Sweet! 2 already. For future reference, instead of Source Map, just simply use Source, like if it's not a map, for instance (in Moose's and eXile's cases).

EDIT- Also, to save redundancy, use links to threads or websites that contain the information on your ideas, instead of writing them out here. Unless you want to, of course.

Silent(U): I'd be interested to know about when you discovered the slowing units thing, as I used it in a map around the time when the first bounds came out (Snowbound, Desertbound, Icebound)

I think MutilatedPuppet was the "discoverer" of unshared vision to yourself.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SiLeNT(U) on 2004-08-05 at 20:41:38
I discovered it about 2 years ago when I was playing around with burrowed units in this little test map of mine. I was like wtf and thought it was a bug, nobody knew what it was and I hadn't ever seen it before so I assumed I discovered it, if i remember right I showed it to tux.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Stereo on 2004-08-05 at 20:46:52
Yea, I discovered it by mistake too. I was trying to use a burrowed unit to make a "long-range" view distance with a zergling instead of its small view, and it ended up slowing the zergling down like hell.

The oldest map of mine I can find that uses it was created about July 24th 2002... I think I might have had a map before it that featured the effect but it was just one of many "test" maps I made, 64x64s designed to test specific things like spawning extra larvas from hatcheries (dunno if I got to this first...), running the junkyard ai on scarabs (a friend told me about their behaviour if you moved them so I tried it) and doing some of those little map "tricks" via triggers (cloaked zerg drones for one).. also I made a map where a wraith spawned creep behind it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2004-08-06 at 01:46:32
So should I put you both down for it? Stereo, you got any stuff? I remember you talking about some tricks you knew way back when, though I can't remember if they were yours or not.

Ok, before I add mine to the list, let me post them t to varify if anyone discovered them before me independently (which I'm sure for a few maps is the case):
  • .scx]Binary Calculator- The first implementation of basic integer math functions with SC counters.
  • .scx]Starcraft Photoshop- Implemented "painting" tool system with adjustable size settings, colors, and brush options, such as blot, spray, line, and the godly fill tool; a real feat to accomplish in starcraft, if I do say so myself.
  • .scx]Mineral Mountain- Unique map premise: pushing a command center to the end of the map by mining a path for it to liftoff and land, while another team of "gnomes" attempts to foil your progress. I think that's the first map of it's kind.
  • .scx]Borrowers- New concept map: defeat your opponent by "borrowing" randomly generated scattered terran buildings to build troops and hunt down other borrower players.
  • .scx]Minesweeper- Created functional implementation of the window's game in Starcarft. Invented methods to randomize and mark the "sqares" (buildings) as having a mine, and the system to detect, mark, and count how many are nearby another given square.
  • .scx]Fishing Game- First known implemention of using disruption webs for targetting and affecting things in the map.
  • .scx]Fire Fighters- First known implemention of virtual HP by marking buildings with stacked burrowed units. Also first implemention of using splash damage to affect the burrowed units of a given building and thus change its virtual HP, as well as upgrade each building's virtual HP over time, to create the effect of increasing fire. Also implemented a "freeway" system using a cloaked wraith and a siege tank positioned in the direction of the lane moving under the wraith, to create the illusion of freeway travel speed.
  • .scx]Cannon Balls- First implementation I can recall of a trigger-based vote counting system, as well as "virtual" terrain via a grid of buildings shaped into an island, using different player buildings to represent different terrain "elevations". Also implemented a "projectile" system and a system of trajectory to determine when they would come in contact with the virtual terrain.
  • .scx]Kill Me!- Invented "falling" units, randomized freeway with collision detection and timing and randomized traffic sounds, cars, and car spacings (yup. look at the triggers to see), "bleeding" units (as shown in the interactive scene), and "Super Saiyan" energy FX via corsair splash hits (both the flash and the sound FX, but no visable corsair or attack target).
  • .scx]Trigger Happy Defense- Invented player-owner based virtual HP system, shooter system w/ different weapons (via defiler's dark swarm), weapon switching menu via. gateway built units, purchase system via. mind controling vespene barrels, "traps" system (automated turrets, temporary pit traps, and proximity mines), "boss" enemies w/ counter-based AND player-owner-based virtual HP, ammo system via copying from death counters to the vespene gas counter, and that annoying but unavoidable proximity shot prevention system (prevents shots from getting mixed up).
I'll add some of my inventions from Gassers, The Club, Flash Flood, and LoOny D later. Tell me if any of those ideas were done before, though.

Dangit mog, you're right! I don't just mean casually right, I mean WE should do something to get blizzard off there asses and realize they still have a loyal and strong mapping community for one of their old games, and not just the usual idiot bnet crowd asking for CD keys or complaining about petty censored.gif like BSers and stuff.

*sigh*, damned if I know WHAT to do, though.

yea i totally agree with moogle.. blizzard should really make abetter editor o and btw i have created with my own bright mind!!!! absolutly nothing sad.gif which is depressing, i just wish i could stake something as my own besides a crappy clan that dies with me sad.gif

Edit: i know what to do!! We will get every single good (and bad) map maker to sign a petition saying that they will stop making maps and realesing them to the public unless they do decide to come out with some nice editors!!! that or we can just sign a petition but i like the boycot idea best!

Anyways, If anyone cares Yes i testify to PickleWeezle being the first to use the Tab Mark in Overlap, Also the first to do triple, quad, quin, and sex. That im aware of but ask him. (Sex as in 6, dirty mind)

Tux I hightly doubt your fisher map was the first to use the distruption web. Tell me the date you made the map and i'll compare it to the date of the map TheHonorKnight Made. (his is proboly like 3 years old.

I'll go ahead and list things like , first explotion obstical, bound, opstical map, minimap image. And all that fun crap.

It's simple. We get some sort of petition and make a big mushy long email, copy it, and have everyone send it so they get #### copies of it. Also make the title extremely catchy so they would open it.

I might have done a functioning minesweeper first, well except for 1 thing - it didn't handle you clicking a "0" space at all so you couldn't clear large spaces at once.

It used a corsair/defiler to mark squares or to "click" them.

I totally misplaced it though, unfortunately.

EDIT: Found its predecessor, which didn't work quite right, dated Nov 11 2001. But I still can't find the fullfeatured one.

EDIT again: There it is, its dated May 02.

I found out how to make units with 0 attack damage... and then shortly after, live units with 0hp. The 0 damage attack killed them  This before SCMDraft or Starforge were out yet (well, except maybe scmdraft 1)

All i can say is that ages ago, before i was using any real editors, other than the basic, i found out how to place units for the same player from different races.

Do all that you want with the first race, and once you've placed all the unit you need, select the whole map, and then delete it, then change the race of the player, and press undo, and you can place for the new race, while having the rest of the stuff still there.

I'm sure others could do this, but when you had nothing i thought it rather clever...(long time ago, before i found emerald)

Not bad, coko. Shoulda thought of that myself in ye old days, woulda saved me a few triggers and locations for some of my earlier maps. Well, not like it matters cause my early maps were never released, so bah.

Anyway, I may be gone for a bit so I'll have to update the first post later with your stuff, clokr. But before I do, I'm thinking it would be easier (and avoid hitting the post character max) to simply link to the post that contained the idea with the title and author of it only. Should I do that instead?

As for minesweeper, the hardest part was getting the 0 section to clear out upon being "selected", so I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of it was nothing new. But if you link the map, I'll put you down for the first one to have done it (the concept of it, at least).
