Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Morally Bankrupt Liberals?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2006-09-24 at 18:15:11
I hate Bill O'Reilly. I am doing this for the mere purpose of defacing him. Here is a copy of the lawsuit filed against him. Some parts of it are rather graphic, so *Viewer Discretion* is advised. Well, I'm actually writing it because conservatives have painted the media as having a "liberal bias," and that liberals are inherently immoral, among other reasons. I think I'll make a topic on the broader subject later, but here is some stuff against Bill O'Reilly. From the wiki on Bill, it's rumored that he settled with millions of dollars against the plaintiff, although they both agreed to keep the terms of settlement private.

The media does in fact have liberal bias, Bill O'Reilly is just a hypocritical fool. As far as I'm concerned, almost everything on television only gives one side of the story.

Does it now? I'm not so sure there is, at least to the extent that Fox News would have us believe. The vast majority of stuff on CNN, CBS, MSNBC seems to be objective. The most liberal shows are comedic in nature, so you can't really compare them. My keyboard is really messing up the typing, so I'll reply later if this sorts itself out.

Bill O'Reiley isn't bad at all... Look at Sean Hannity. That guy is a complete douche-headed rightwinged guy.

CNN, CBS, MSNBC are kinds that have the biggest bias in their news. They always hide it. ( I have a grudge against CNN yawn.gif ) Thats why CNN doesn't really show political stuffs because people don't like any, and don't even understand. CNN shows alot of murder, robbery and petty crimes that make the country look bad in the views of the people.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2006-09-25 at 06:51:27
I'm sorry, but actually reporting the news is liberal bias? God forbid...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Lithium on 2006-09-25 at 12:24:26
No, not an actual bias, but there are hidden bias you will never know also, showing series of one sided events can be considered a bias, which makes you think something is bad without having a thought of being influenced.... ( not always, but some. Especially in politics )
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2006-09-25 at 17:12:39
Yes, I guess showing the entirety of one of Bush's speeches instead of showing short, doctored clips might be a sign of bias. After all, Bush jokes write themselves.

He's kept very hush hush about it.

QUOTE
On October 13, 2004, O'Reilly filed a preemptive lawsuit against O'Reilly Factor producer Andrea Mackris, her lawyer (Benedict P. Morelli), and Morelli's law firm for extortion contending Mackris had privately demanded more than $60 million (USD) to settle a claim of sexual harassment. Mackris filed her complaint of sexual harassment later the same day.[21] In her complaint, she alleged that O'Reilly had made numerous references to "phone sex, vibrators, threesomes, masturbation, the loss of his virginity, and sexual fantasies."[22][23] [24][25] The complaint also sought additional damages and described alleged actions of retaliation by Fox, et.al.[25] O'Reilly filed an answer to the complaints, and the two cases were settled out of court.[26]

Both parties agreed to keep the terms of settlement confidential, and to withdraw their claims of wrongdoing, which each have done. According to the Post, the settlement amount was likely in the millions of dollars. After the case was settled, O'Reilly's only public comment was, "This chapter is behind me, and I will never talk about it again." O'Reilly has not commented since.

Is there something bad about a liberal bias? Without liberalism black people would still be in chains, women would all be seen as little more than breeding vessels and homosexuals would be killed. We're better off without the stone-age thinking of conservative nutjobs.

No, we need both as part of the checks and balances that have held this country roughly together. I don't want anyone or any group to have unrestrained power, even if I agree with them and their ideas.

Did I say liberalism was bad? Thanks for making that assumption.

Why is this a serious decesion? It seems more like a personal rant against people who disagree with your beliefs.

I don't see anything wrong with Fox News.
I can't find in all my research when Fox News has been wrong, or spun an issue or been generally dishonest and bias in any of its NEWS reports.

Now one can say the COMMENTARY shows can be leaning to the right. But the actually news portions of the channel are as object as any other news agency. Really give me one example of when fox reported a news story and it was entirely right wing bias...

Final point: Nothing wrong with Fox News, be tolerante of that channel.

Ha you find nothing wrong with it because it fits your perspective. Always has. Even some right wing conservative friends I have can say Fox is right wing.

Far from it actually. Except for a few sentences in the 1st paragraph, this entire thread is about whether or not the news has a liberal bias or not. I tend to say it doesn't mainly, me being a liberal, disagree with a LOT of what the news says.

It was mainly due to Fox and CNN (don't like that channel either) and some other news stations that this Iraq war got sold to us. They may have never done a truly 'false' story, but the fact that they leave out some critical stories, or switch over to something meaningless while something big is going on is trivial. On the news, that little girl who was murdered was more important then the current war in which people were dying. A small news story would fit it at best, not a nationwide frenzy over it.

I have yet to hear on fox news about the UN's torture report on how there is more torture in Iraq now, then under Saddam. I heard a tiny mutter about the hathida massacre commited by US troops in Iraq, but little since then, including their current trial. I have heard very little on the news of the canadian software engineer who was arrested at JFK with supposed ties to AQ and was sent to Syria and tortured. The very same one who just recently, I believe 3 years after being detained, was told by a judge, that he had absolutely no ties to AQ and was tortured and arrested falsely. they have an article on the site... but never heard a thing on the TV. Now can I seem to find one when I seach Google.

Fox also seems to have a way of calling the Iranian president and the Venezeulan president both nutjobs (possibly not that word, but similar words.) You may cite whenn chavez called Bush the devil, and when the Iranian stated (If we are attacked, we will put Israel into an eternal coma." and similar sayings, but remember, actions speak louder then words. Both have not done as much as we.

Senate Moves to OK Detention of U.S. Citizens
The Bush administration has slipped in a major change to the Senate bill on interrogations that would allow U.S. citizens to be detained as enemy combatants. Initially the bill defined an enemy combatant as anyone who engaged in hostilities against the United States or its allies but the definition has been expanded to include anyone who has materially supported hostilities against the United States or its allies. The Washington Post reports that human rights experts expressed concern that the language in the new provision would be a precedent-setting congressional endorsement for the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens. Meanwhile on Monday, a group of activists from Code Pink stood up in protest over the bill during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. The activists stood with their backs toward the Senators while wearing t-shirts that spelled out the phrase “No Torture.” The activists called on the Senators to remove a section of the bill that strips detainees of the right to habeas corpus.

UN Envoy: More Torture in Iraq Today than Under Saddam
The United Nations’ leading campaigner against torture has issued a grim assessment of Iraq under US occupation. Manfred Nowak, the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, says more Iraqis are being tortured today than when Saddam Hussein was in power. His comments come one day after the UN said more than sixty-six hundred Iraqi civilians were killed in July and August.

How would you know so much about Fox if you don't watch the news channel? And yes I do believe you have stated that you don't watch it before in another thread and no Im not going to go searching through the hundreds of pages looking for that exact quote.

Kash-
You haven't shown where the right wing bias in the NEWS reports have been on fox. So far you just disagree about what is more important in your mind about what they report.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by HolySin on 2006-09-27 at 22:07:10
The bias just lies in what stories the news reports, not really the commentary. Overall, the media will show stories about corrupt Republicans/Conservatives and then the everyday news. It's not like they constantly talk about corrupt members of that party, but they do it from time to time. Personally though, I don't find a party that really fits my beliefs.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2006-09-27 at 22:57:22
Chris, Fox News is commentary.

Today, I went searching in Barnes and Noble for one of Ann Coulter's books, just for kicks and giggles. Did you know that instead of the humor section, I found it in the Politics section? That frightened me. However, at least they had Al Franken's stuff there as well. I know it's entirely unrelated, but most news today is absolute drivel.

It's sad when I get more out of The Daily Show than CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, etc.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by TheDaddy0420 on 2006-09-28 at 01:27:37
Felagund, Fox news has commentary shows such as O'Reilly, H & C and Heraldo at large plus Gretta or what ever her name is.

Those are air-ed in the prime time times of the day where YOU will mostly likely view them. Now that is why they are popular and also the reason why you think Fox News is bias. What you are forgetting are their actual news portions inbetweeen comericals and NEWs shows before and after the commentary shows.

And the Daily show is fake news, I think its a funny show, but theres more spin in the news in that show then what you could dream of Fox being bias.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2006-09-28 at 01:46:31
So what if Fox news is right-winged; it's not like people are going to be brainwashed by watching only this channel. It's still news isn't it? Often, the "facts" aren't biased; only the commentary by newsanchors like Oreilly and Hannity would show signs of bias. And you don't always have to agree with their opinions about issues.

I Watch every news channel to know some "facts." I hardly watch it to listen to their biased commentary.

All this right-wing/left-wing hating is getting ridiculous, just like the OSMAP debates circulating these forums... Why can't people just cooperate disgust.gif

No, I'm saying that the Daily Show says things that the other networks refuse to. In that regard, it does tell more than the others.

Fox news is really bad, if you think that's real news... shoot yourself.

Bill O' Reilly and Al Franken are the same person.

Just because Bill O' Reilly pretends to be a complete psycho doesn't mean that he actually sexually harassed anyone. You have no proof of either side.

I have never seen Bill O'Reilly, nor have I ever wanted to.
But I can say with some certainty, that anything you watch on television will not be a complete story of an event. You cannot say there is no spin on any political issue. The only way to actually understand any political happenings, is to actually look for them yourself, use multiple sources of information to draw a conclusion, not simply the "liberal" media.

I for one do not see the televised media as very liberal, they are just mean people who find faults in whoever is currently in power.
