Don't you think that it's kind of odd that America really doesn't care about violence, and yet America is very stuck up about sexuality and the expressing of it? I think that that speaks great volumes about American values. Obviously, America is quite alright with an existence born of violence, but the expression of lust, love, or anything along those lines is very improper.
Here is what I'm talking about. It's a review for a car, but it's in French.
French Car ReviewNow, to be fair, it's a Ferrari. Most of the reviews on there don't have scantily clad women, but still. Well, to be more precise, it's a site about cars. It just happens to have a large section dedicated to scantily clad ladies. And you might say lots of car magazines and the such have sexy ladies. That's very true, but this isn't one of those car magazines. It's rather a formal online publication. I hope you can see that difference. I also hope that you can appreciate the hypocrisy in America when it comes to morality, between violence and sexuality.
Sex sells, the problem is people think sex is wrong because they are jealous of people having great sex lives while they have none.
I'd buy that car if it came with that woman. Any thing that deals with lustful desire gets attention.
The country of America was born through violence. So no, we don't really care about violence.
America doesen't care about violence not because it was born in violence. Almost every country was probably born in violence.
Here is why I think America doesen't care about violence, and has a lower moral level compared to some other pregressive countries:
-It's culture is relatively young
-If you're rich, you want to close your eyes on the things that made you richy, or keep you rich.
The American Culture - It's not as old as you think it is, for the idea of "freedom" existed before it was made into reality.
What is an American Culture? A mixture of every culture in the world perhaps. Even in the major ethnicity of 'Whites', there are Christians, Catholics, Atheists, and Religion Haters. There are many kinds of people who don't even know where they came from. Latins, teutons, slavic and so on. You think thats all? People ethnicity in black and asians also divide like that. Cultures differ if you take a close examination.
By Violence, America sure do care about violence. Except that the culture makes people naturally violent, and not just physically violent, people are usually violent in their language also.
Your like asking why alcohol is ok to use, yet marijuana is not.
It doesn't make sense, our country just has those rules.
I wouldn't say Americans can't have sex on TV or the media etc. Its just many people, including parents, don't like nudity or seeing nudity on TV. Jeez just watch Niptuck or The Shield or any shows like that and you get plenty of sex and hot women and semi nude (butt and alot of skin) people on those shows.
Its just our media culture right now isn't quite ready for nudity, I think you guys should tolerate the US culture more...
Some of our regulations are silly, in my opinion, but those regulations only affect publically aired programs. They do not apply to cable television or satellite television. Many of those channels adhere to them voluntarily, but in reality there is nothing legally binding any teleivision show that is not broadcast along the public airwaves.
You admit that America is uptight, but then claim we don't have any culture of our own. Have you considered that maybe our culture is the very thing you are complaining about? A culture of prudence.
I'm not saying you do or do not agree with the idea, but that doesn't change the fact.
So the idea suddenly becomes a fact?
I go to school and people come from all backgrounds. One time, I was reading some book in english, in highschool and I said the word nymphomaniac. The teacher looked at me and said what.
I don't understand why it would be so offensive to say that. I am obviously referring to a woman that sells sex for money. Do I really have to say prostitute?
I just think people get anal quickly and need to understand that we all are different. Schools try to shove down our throats ideals that everyone conforms to.
So my point is that...
I don't think we would be so against certain things like sex, not if we put laws to bind it, but rather remove the REASON to do so.
Like instead of stealing books, you would have a library. Sure there are still laws against stealing books, but having a library removes that need.
One should also ask the question on why you want sex to be so open and in the public's eye?
Shouldn't there be limits and decencies?
America's sexual repression is due to our Puritanical origins.
Felagund you need to stop posting topics about things you don't understand. Take a damn history class already.
Of course there's a different perspective on sex than there is on violence. Violence can be used to do justice and take out your frustration. For instance, a person angers you beyond all reason, you're not going to rape him, you're going to punch him. Rape leaves a mental scar while violence will leave bruises that eventually go away. Sex shouldn't be public since it may influence children to do things they could regret and will forever remember. Hard to say though, I guess what I'm getting at is that violence is more temporary while sex can be more permanent.

A nymphomaniac is not a woman who sells sex for money. I can see why your teacher would be disturbed, because you don't know what you're talking about. That's probably the exact thought that went through her head.

To be technical rape and ciolence go hand in hand. Rape is considered a highly violent sex crime.
And the lack of sex education leads to more kids having sex. I know tons of people who thought the "pull out" method was effective because no one told them different. One of them is now a teen parent.
I do agree that sex is more permanent. In a sex ed class I took years ago, our teacher made a point to tell us that losing your virginity changes everything for you. Girls get more attached and in most cases, guys want more. And since we were in high school at the time, it was not the place or time to be sexually active. At the same time, there was always the risk of pregnancy. And its a very valid risk.
Yes, but in a rape, what's more memorable? The violence of cornering you? Or the actual act?
Once again, with feeling.
America's sexual repression is due to our Puritanical origins.

That question can not be anwsered in any simple format...
Besides the fact you are dumbing down the actual violence in rape... with "of cornering you".

So it was all the Puritans, eh? You know, other groups settled the thirteen colonies as well.
Yeah, all those Mexican Puritans coming into this country now... ruining everything.
Above Post: Mmm not really, just a guy trying to make people laugh...
Topic: So why on earth do we want sex out in the public's eye?
It's kinda sad.. to quote an upcoming Capote movie.. "*looks at magazine* This is disgusting! Women look better with clothes on!"
