Ill put it like this. A revolution is going on in SEN. SEN is currently the heart of UMS mapping. OSMAP as much as i despise it, is letting n00bs learn, and steal again. Clans are getting back into their heads from the whole Mp buissness. Mp has fallen, true, a hard blow for the map making community. But NGM, the star of hope as i see it, has just produced some 5 maps in a matter of days. What im saying is if more MM Clans, map or mod by the way, get into their rythm and start doing what they do, we might, just ,ight have a second SC golden age. SEN is going to, so why shouldnt bnet?
Thoughts? Discussion?
My Views:
I think its very possible that the SC Bnet community, SENners or not, can come together for a second golden age, weather they know it or not. But it starts with each and every one of us. I urge anyone on SEN to log on Bnet more and play SC, especially those of you that can host. The number of people who can host on bnet has dropped due to the devil of routers. Even if you log on and play one game, some one might RM and start another, and so on. If we try, even if its one more game for the good of SC, we might just be able to do this. I myself for the first time in two years have completed a map. Me, the famous unfinished map maker. Make maps, mods, and play them. Play them for Battle.net.

Nope. SEN is going back up. Starcraft isn't. People who don't buy starcraft to buy a more advanced game won't know or care about what happens on SEN. Sorry, but I don't see it happening.
Yes, SEN might be going up again, but we have an enemy rising. Terrorist faction is growing and building their own version of SEN. Maplantis the OSMAP empire.

OSMAP is a devils tool. Ill fight it best i can. Most peopel are too lazy or just cant find OSMAP. Some people are so lazy that they dont protect their map because of OSMAP. Lazy + Lazy = nothing solved. Protect your maps, even the latest version of OSMAP causes numerous string errors.

Ditto that, DEAD is obsessed with thinking that people who like OSMAP are terrorists. Who told DEAD about maplantis anyways? And for this clan NGM, I wanna see the maps!

Huzzah!
Might I start off with this, I support OSMAP.
Protection does not have much purpose. Let's see why:
Somebody will steal my map!
Congratulations, you're the reason it could be stolen effectively. The fact is you didn't popularize it enough for a good amount of people to know you are the original creator of the map. A map rarely gets stolen moments after its release, usually a couple days. Also, you can try being secretive and naming a unit after your account that is never placed in game, but can be viewed in staredit.net. People love to bring up the classic example of Cat and Mouse. Guess what, a monkey could've came up with that map, it's not too hard of a concept.
I don't want people to know my methods!
Too bad. Most of your methods are probably spin-offs of other methods put here. Also, there are smart enough mappers out there that can look at a map, see how the maker executed the actions, and explain the method to others.
I don't want somebody to edit my map.
This is the main arguement, which was brought up by Minimoose2707. There isn't really a way to say you're wrong for not wanting anybody else to mess with your map, but you can reason with the unprotection and prevent people from interfering with your triggers through other methods. If you do your job correctly and spread your version, a good deal of people will only have that version. Going back to what I said about people opening a map, they usually take a long time to release their own version. Those people generally release their version out to the public, or in other words, people you don't know or care about. Simply enough, play your version with your friends. If you want to play it public, host your version only and make sure you have a backup file of that version. Most of the time, the majority of people will have your version and will prefer it if it has good triggering.
As far as preventing people from opening your map and messing with your triggers, the best way is to overwhelm the person. Do this through mass triggering or complexity. For example, who the hell would make their own version of Rush? That takes way too much time and in the long run, overwhelming to my schedule.
Those are the three basic arguements against OSMAP. OSMAP lets you fix maps that you protected (such as taking out map name overlapping), it allows you to look at triggering to see how something is done, and it allows you to fix or adjust other maps.
Going back onto the subject, Starcraft is not coming back alive. Almost any map making activity dies off quickly. Staredit.net doesn't even seem so lively to me. Only if all the melee players switched over to UMS would I consider Starcraft alive, but this is unrealistic since many melee players have the mentality where UMS maps are mediocre and are for people who don't know how to play melee. I predict that Starcraft will die off completely in about ten years.

Starcraft will never die, I wish i could say the same for SEN, But who knows, SEN Might live FOREVA
Uhh, yes it will.
Nothing is new in SC, people just care a bit more. This won't last very long. If there were EUDs, or something actually NEW, then SC might be a bit more fun, but the reality is that everything on SC has been done, nothing is new.
The day that NOBODY Plays SC Anymore i'll eat my socks, so untill then.
It's possible Blizzard would put down Battle.net so those users would move onto games they have to pay for and also not having to worry about employees for those games.
Didn't think of that.. very possible. Remember, Blizzard also doesn't care for SC any more, and soon they might just shut down the servers for SC bnet from uncaring
. I completely disagree with your view on OSMAP, but you doubtless heard all of my arguments on the matter already.
I don't think they will go that far. I think Sc still sells in korea pretty well, but I may be wrong...
Also, they still have Diablo 1 servers... I don't think they'll go that far yet

I believe they dislike DEAD at the new site.

Battle.Net has been long corrupted by hackers, backstabbers, spammers, map riggers, map stealers, noobs, and of course, map making newbies. They play disgusting nudity maps, unbalanced maps, and are also mostly made of horrible map makers. There is no hope left for the Battle.Net UMS community in general, but clans, StarCraft UMS communities, Modding Communities, and the Battle.Net Melee community still have a shot of having a second Golden Age.
Why, Blizzard may end up shutting out StarCraft from Battle.Net because there is no profit being made.QUOTE(DEAD @ Sep 25 2006, 04:07 PM)

Afraid of a little competition, I see.

This is all true, especially on West, where only scum mainly remain. But I believe if we take Leons idea seriously, get enough support and push this forward. We can establish a better community in general on bnet.
Yes, let's all overcome our laziness and make maps so that UMS appears lively again. What's the problem though? We've come to a point where it becomes pretty damn hard to make a new type of map which is pretty key. Specifically, a new type of map which is fun and easy to make so new mappers are able to make spin-offs. We have RPGs, Ball maps, Bounds, Defenses, Scenarios, Snipers, etc. We also have some concept maps going, but in the long run, they're just a different approach to an old idea. Unless we do create a new type(s) of map, I don't see any UMS map revival in the future.
From my personal opinion, StarCraft is unfortunately never going to live its glory days once again. Yes, some good clans are getting used to what they are supposed to do now and make new maps. But, as HolySin said, they are approaching the old ideas with new ways. Unless we find good new ideas we can approach with great new ideas, maybe we can see more people starting to play SC.
I mean do any other countries have annual starcraft tornaments full of $$? I don't think any people besides South Koreans play melee maps anymore. The general Asian server is now full of Koreans. When I last visited Korea, there were fewer starcraft players playing UMS or melee maps. And with the dying of south korean zeal for SC, the SC will die soon without a doubt.
And hope that SC2 will come out soon, or else SC will die forever. Personally, I belive mods are the only way out. Sure, there are some concepts we haven't used, but with modding, the possibilities are almost infinite. It's hilarious to play a basic UMS map while it's loaded with a mod.

LOL true true... I gotta get used to mods.. I haven't played any of them for a while.
seems like mindarchon came back for a little post on the SC subject...I think everyone is taking this website too seriously. What has this website gotten done in the past couple months? What's new? The only thing I saw that had to do with mapmaking was Moose's monthly competitions. I thought those were a cool, even if I didn't participate I liked seeing Moose's commentary and interesting map ideas.
Then again, I just stop by every now and then. I don't catch every single thing that goes on here. So inform me.
