Does a unit's ability to micro increase its overall value in a Starcraft Micro Map for balancing purposes?
My opinion is no it doesn't effect the strategic strength of a unit, because all units can micro in some form. Am I correct? I need to know because I'm working on two types of UMS Maps, one of which urmom might be familiar with.
Well it sort of does. Microing with a dragoon or a vulture is a lot easier. If you lower the life on them though then they are weak to ranged units.
So it has to be pretty much impossible to balance judging by all of the different factors involved. =Relative Balancing
Well it wouldn't be impossible to balance but maybe you should just make it so that you can get fewer dragoons/vultures/other good microing units instead of lowering their stats by a lot.
I'm redoing that Micro Tool map so that I can load the units I want and see how even they are without Micro Techniques through AI scripts. Then, I can modify it judging by Micro abilities of the units.
Micro is a very big part of game balance. It is one of the only factors that Blizzard overlooked when creating StarCraft, as the Terran race is the most micro-extensive race.
Examples:
• A professional microer with a goliath and a dropship theoretically can kill an unlimited amount of guardians.
• All terran infantry, other than the medic, can always kill computer lurkers if properly microed.
• "Walling" is the Terran's most powerful defensive maneuver against ground melee unit rushes.
• A single zealot can destroy a zergling rush using a hit-and-run tactic.
• Siege Tanks in tank mode can quickly recover from hit-and-run microing due to their turrets autolocking onto enemy units.
• Lifting buildings and moving them over "walling" units and buildings annihilate human players' ability to manually target the wall.
• etc....
When judging your balance, you have to take into effect how much micro the scenario you create allows for. In general, though, that is all for the purpose of making your beginning guesses rather close; after guessing thinking about all those factors, go actually test it over and over again and adjust as necessary.
