In Colorado Amendment 42 Was Passed. Amendment 42 raised minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.85. There was a big discussion in my Government class as school today about if it was either going to help the economy, or hurt it. There was many good ideas brought up like Workers getting Fired because the Work place can not afford to pay them anymore, or that Taxes will increase, and that prices in stores will increase.
What are your guy's thoughts on Amendment 42?
It doesn't really matter, money is just an abstract thing that will always have a balance; people just want to see bigger number.
Since wages went up, where do you think they will get that extra money? Obviously it won't appear out of nowhere and nobody will pay it from their pockets. Prices will just go up in order to compensate or unemployment will go up.
What this hurts the most is the lower middle class which keeps getting closer and closer to that minimun wage since their salaries or wages won't go up.
Minimum wage went up because the dollar bill currency went down. So it probably is going to hurt the economy. In New York City, they are trying to raise it to 7$!!
Ya, in Maine the minimum wage is $6.50! This is supposed to rise because Maine has one of the highest living costs. New Hampshire has one of the lowest because they have no sales tax.

Yeah it's so Close to $7.00 now I love it, everyone was waiting around at my work to see if it passed and when it did it was so loud because basicly everyone got a raise because of it.
That really hurts those who save money
, but once the dollar starts going up it will only go up faster unless something is done. Dollar is less and now minimum wage goes up thats a equasion for bad. I hope the democrats do something in the house and senate considering they now have it instead of just yelling at the republicans for their mistakes lets see if they get yelled at. We are obviously in a recession, but many businesses are doing good (cause republicans) though that really doesnt affect us lower and middle class citizens.
The majority of the United States wealth is in rich people's coffers. I don't mind the fact of minimum wage being rised. Some rich guys will only be making less money who owns a hugh multi-million dollar chain. However, I do believe that most minimum wage workers tryed with little effort in school.
I doubt chains will really be affected by it if you consider that two or three Happy Meals at McDonald's sell for roughly the same amount of money that a worker at McDonald's gets paid per hour.
In California, we're still at $6.75 for minimum wage.

This isnt any politcal party's fault. Its the economy
The reason for the low dollar worth is people that have alot of money in the bank.
The more they have, the less that we the average people have. so the government printed more money. more money, less worth.
2+2=triangle indeed
Actually economically speaking, more money in the bank will not effect the worth of the dollar. The loans that a bank makes and the interest rates set by the Federal Reserve manage inflation. If the interest rate is high, people are less likely to take out loans, thus shrinking the circulation of money and lowering inflation. If interest rates are low, people are more likely to borrow money, thus increasing the circulation.
If you're a monetarist, the reason for the low dollar worth (in other words, high inflation) is simply because the government has expanded the economy too much by putting more money in circulation than necessary, as you also stated. But other theories also regard unemployment and various other components as factors of inflation.
In other words, it doesn't help that were running yearly deficits and cutting taxes for the rich.... all the while using as much oil as possible.
We deserve to go kaput.
yeah minimum wage in texas is $5.15, but my job starts it at $6.50
im an assistant manager and i get paid $10.50 an hour... so they its going or already happenening then they better raise it $1.35 more >.>
So what you're saying is you feel you should be paid a dollar more because the minimum wage is going up - even though you aren't being paid minimum as is?
it went up in Montana too, yay for me, im going to get a job in like a year
It is also sad that more money is outside of the United States than within. That might explain why people aren't getting payed as much.
... Many countries keep U.S. dollars for buying things in their worth; incase if their countries have inflation and have nothing else worth a while. That has NOTHING to do with "not getting paid much". You guys are talking about part time jobs. Part time jobs are never going to give you "alot" of money. If you ask me, I'd get a job that gets you a "tip". Those jobs get you alot of money.
Oh and in my opinion, the government purposely put more money in circulation.

Money outside the U.S. has no direct effect on our currency. Inflation in other nations makes the dollar worth more outside the U.S., but does nothing for it inside the U.S. - especially when it comes to wages.

Exactly. People invest in the U.S. dollar because they know it is a stable currency and our government will not collapse.
McAfee there is more money in the banks than there is printed money so it doesnt really matter if your paycheck is printed or in the bank.
Minimum wage is bull****. It's not doing what it was intended to do, not in America, not in Canada either. You cannot live off of minimum wage, unless you consider being hugely in a debt that you will never crawl out of living off of minimum wage.
Minimum wage shouldn't be a fixed amount, there should be frequent research that determines the minimum amount to stay above the poverty line, and that's what minimum wage should always be equal to.
It was years ago they detemined minimum wage in Canada needs to be at least 12 something to preform the spirit of the law. So what do they do? They raise it maybe 60 cents from 7 dollars. Thanks a lot? But hey, at least Canada has health care. If you get hurt in America, not only can you not do most unskilled labour jobs (because you're injury is most likely a result of the job), you're now in a debt (for medical attention, it costs a **** load) you couldn't afford even if you still were able to work!
Face reality: If you're not above the poverty line, you should be included in the unemployed statistic. That might actually make countries worry about it more, because that shows up in Standard of Living for your country.
It's sad that the richest country in the world (the U.S.A.) can't 'afford' to pay it's unskilled labourers enough to live.
Then again, I'm very left wing, so what would I know?

More than the government I guess since they havent done anything to try to fix it...
Those laborers you see are probably dumbtards you would see in high school that never studied. In that case, they deserve to be so poor.
Some people are raised from dirt poor backgrounds. It is hard for them to suceed in life considering only the brightest get scholarships.
The USA is in debt more than any other country in the world, but the average citizen in the USA is richer than any other country in the world I think.
If you work hard at sports or school you can get a scholorship and theres many small scholorships that only a few apply to.

I disagree. I think everyone wants to succeed, but not everyone is given the opportunities. A lot of times a child has to work to help support his family, who is in debt from the minimum wages not being high enough. How is he supposed to do well in school, or frankly even have time for it, if he's working full time?
