Report, edit, etc...Posted by assassin_498 on 2004-08-09 at 22:16:05
OK, I know I posted this up about a week ago, but i was concentrating on Hydra Blood, but I finished it, so now i can concentrate on this--Haunted Castle RPG

Terrain
The terrain will be on badlands, and it will be 192x192. The castle will consist of small and large rooms. Im not a very good terrain designer so ill do my best to make it look nice. smile.gif

Gameplay
You will have 4 units to choose at the beginning, and then you will have to choose your NATURAL ATTRIBUTES (Attk, Defense, and Vitality). You will get more stats everytime you lvl. And yes, i will be using the HP% Trigger. There will be traps set all over the castle so be careful (There will also be screaming sounds). There will probably be weapons and items set all over the castle as well.

Story
You and your friends crashlanded on a huge island due to a faulty engine. You find a castle and you and your friends decide to enter it. So, you and your friends enter the castle. But, suddenly the door closes in on you and you hear a loud screaming noise (there will be screaming sounds at the beginning of the game). You and your friends are trapped, and you must find a key to open the door.

Please post your suggestions! It would be greatly appreciated.

Is it going to be a horror map or a survival map? Because you should decide early on what kind of mood you're trying to set up for the players. That should make developing the terrain and cinematics a lot easier.

make a horror and survival map, make sure that the player is micro managing, not macro

Have randomness, like one time you enter a room to find monsters, another time to find some ghosts that give you clues about something.

Sounds just like Haunted Island from )(nsane... Well, you could add new things and possibly a more detailed story... Unless you want to look like 75% of the horror maps out there... Well good luck...

I keep hearing: X people, get stranded in place Y because they crashed their vehicle Z...

Hopefully, you have some more ideas there heh...

The decription you gave us was vague and well... it sounded like most of the horror genre. Here what I have for the really bad decrip you gave us.

- Sounds are an important part of any horror map; they set the atmosphere and make the map more believable.

- In the beginning, have the door shut by itself and have the players walk around a bit. After exploring for like a minute, have them see stuff at the side of their screens. It makes the players get into the mood more easily.

- Don't make the whole map without action. No action = No fun.

- The attributes sound nice. Make sure that they work properly and make sure that they are easy to assign.

- If you know how to make random triggers, try making the screams and the spooky sounds random.

As I said before, they story sounds vague. Here's what I think it should sound like.

[Black Screen]

[Typed on the lower left] Somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

[Player's now see a dropship flying across water. Have a location constanly centered on it and have it center screen on that location]

[Suddenly, an explosion near the dropship]

[The island comes into view]

[Another explosion]

Captain:
We're going down!

[Several explosions, and then center the screen on a black part of the map]

[Typed on the lower left] Ten minutes later.

[Center screen on crash site]

[People are around a burning crash]

(Start the map here and have the players explore.)

Note: Jimmy, Sarah, and Timmy are all an allied comp. Have them follow the players.

[Players find castle and it goes into a cinematic mode]

Sarah:
We needed to find shelter. Well... here it is.

Jimmy:
Well... shoot, I really don't want to go in there.

Timmy:
Shoot man! It's our only chance! We need to get some rest and look around for some way to get off this island.

Jimmy:
Whatever.

[They go in]

[Door closes behind them]

Jimmy:
*Freaked* Did anyone close it?

All:
No.

Jimmy:
God dang it. This place is freaking me out. Why don't we go out side.

[Trys door, it's locked.]

Jimmy:
Holy sh!t man! We're locked in!

(Players gain control. Have them explore the castle)

[After a while, have it go into cinimatic mode again.]

Jimmy:
Did you see that?!?!

All:
No.

Jimmy:
I don't think we are alone.

[Hydralisk appears in a cload of smoke, shoots Jimmy, and disappears in smoke.]

[Music Swells]

(Game starts for real. Objective: Get the hell out!)

That what I'm talking about! If this isn't what you are looking for... fine by me. But consider it.

use spooky sounds, and make people crap themselves when they play bc of the scare factor (the mark of a great map maker)

If you want good Press ideas, don't rush the screenshot, and try and show the real best parts of your map.

Im not trying to rush, but im not doing the castle yet, im doing the outside

What I think would be funny is if the plane just crashes into the castle! Then they are just exploring, and you can make it scary and introduce characters a funny/odd way! Also, have bosses in the game, so that it is kinda a horror/survival and kinda a battlefield! Also, take off the RPG at the end of the name, because I think it would sound better if players did not know that's why you ment.

Put elevators in it that can get stuck and stuff, so that way you can trap players and have like little moments of survival...and they are more trapped then before!

Make different floors to the castle! Make a Basement, first and second, and an actic! That would be interesting to see how they are all different.

Also, even if they get out of the castle, they are still stuck on the island, so it should be more like they then have to find some sort of helicopter or boat or something to escape, and make it that they get chased by creates from the castle!

The randomization in rooms would be awsome!

Make it hard to find keys to open doors!

You could have another plane crash into the castle, only it's filled with convicts. That's pretty scary.

Im only sticking to 1 plane crashing outside the castle. Otherwise if i had another plane crash INTO the castle, then i would have to make it look like it destroyed part of the castle. impossible!

A plane.... Crash... Into the castle?
Hum... i think there will be no more castle... wallbash.gif

I just think a plane crashing into a castle would be more interesting than a plane just crashing, because that happens more often than into things...xcept for WTC! I think you should make it crash in the ocean then, show the screen go black, and then show the peoople on the island shore, like they swam there or something, seeing as it is the only land within a hundred miles! Then make it rain, because going in a castle is stupid without something like rain!

The door just shutting sounds lame! Change it into them just falling or getting lost somehow. Like, they start walking in saying "Hello" (Echo it in blue to add creepyness, do it all across the screen!). Then let them wander around a bit, thenlock all doors because of something.

Another way would be that the plane crashes in the ocean, and that is what the character remembers, then he wakes up in a bed, but doesn't know how he got there. He checks over his body and finds some strange mudd marks, but nothing else.

DO ELEVATORS! THEY ROCK!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SpaceBoy2000 on 2004-08-12 at 22:27:15
Some ideas from a not so frequent visitor to this site:

- Caves that you have to "swim" through. Use the Pylon aura glow sprite for the "water". Have some sort of timer that limits how long you can stay under water. Maybe your vision gets smaller and smaller as you stay longer in the water.

- Instead of modern elevators, how about medievalish lifts, where one players operates a crank or something to bring the other player somewhere else. Add appropiate cranking, creaking, and stone rubbing against stone sounds.

- "Dark" areas where there is only one torch (or flashlight, but torches seems more...ancient and unpredicable) which is carried by one player. The rest of the people needs to follow that player with the torch. Maybe if a player dies, their items drop to the floor, and other player can pick it up.

- "Walls" that you can walk through. Invisible bridges. You know, many different illusions for the player to see. Maybe randomize it for each game.

- Friendly ghosts that help you. And maybe some may look like they're helping you, but in fact is leading you to a trap (you figure this out).

- Why fight with guns and all? Won't guns and other physical weapons go right through spirits? Figure out novel ways of killing something. Maybe different weapons work on different things. Maybe sometimes, to kill a ghost, you help it finish what the spirit could not do in life, and therefore releasing it...er...yeah. Too lazy to think of something.

- Don't over use cliques like a curse, or mad scientist or stuff to explain the hauntedness. Maybe drop clues, but have the ending give no definate answer. Make the player think. The longer they think about it, the bigger impact you have.

Mainly, make the map stand out. Don't have it be like the 472327492 horror survival maps already out there. Or else, the map won't be really popular or well liked by people.

Hey remember im only a BEGINNER, so i wouldnt know how to do censored.gif like pylon aura sprites and stuff...and as i said before, there MIGHT be items scattered all over the castle to help you escape. Something like tools to fix your ship or something...
