Staredit Network -> UMS Showcase -> Orbit Defense 1.2

Here's a rather major update of the map Orbit Defense 1.0.

So the way the original map worked was, four players work as a team to defend their own quadrant, and at the end of each round, control of the quadrants rotates, and so you have to defend using your teammates' units.

The biggest change in this version is, you now have a choice between two possible enemies at the start of each round. So it really helps if you specialise your defense force to be most effective against only a specific kind of enemy.

I thought this would be a really good improvement because we spent about five weeks designing and balancing each unit in the game, and I especially spent ages because I tried to make each unit stronger against just one specific kind of enemy unit. But in version 1.0 you had to find 39 different enemy units of all different kinds, so in the end it didn't make much difference what you chose. if you got a Zergling which was good against slow ground units, that wouldn't be much better than getting a Guardian which was good against fast ground units, because you'd end up facing both types of enemies anyway. The advantages and disadvantages would just balance out.

So now you get to specialise. I really think this does make a huge improvement to the gameplay. I'm posting up here to see what you guys think of the map.

The map was made by the Starchitects, which for this map included Dark_Soul74, Doom Dragoon, StealthyDeath, UED77, Whiteknight, ZeroDarkStar and me.

Great map guys. Good job on it!

I envy you guys. I've never had luck managing multi-person Starcraft projects (until just recently, perhaps). Yet you guys made this map ages ago and did a pretty decent job with it.

I'll have to check this version out sometime soon. Rare nowdays are maps and projects that truely manage to reach a semblance of satisfactory completion. Most people just reach the "good enough" point and call it done (I'm no exception). tongue.gif

Oh thanks Tuxedo Templar. I know, it IS hard isn't it? But it gets more fun after you've finished a few doesn't it?

Thanks Urmom.

WOW LOL! THis map is awesome. I like how you made unit strengths and weaknesses. This was pretty fun and hard for me. I like how you did the orbiting too.

Wow. I thought the Starchitects were gone, but that may be because our BlizzSCUMS team has lost its activity. Very cool. I'll have to download this one and give it a shot.

It should be played with atleast 3 people. It is really hard with only 1 player tongue.gif

Gosh thanks EcHo! I'm really pleased you liked it. Did you manage to finish it? Because I've never actually finished this version, although that's no surprise considering I've only played with people on Battle.net, so I've only really played it with new players all the time.

Well actually DevliN, this was just me, individually, editing the map we made quite a while ago, it must be at least two years now I think. Although all the rest of the Starchitects still deserve credit, they made 90% of the map, I just did the changes for this version.

And the Starchitects kind of were gone, so you're mostly right. I kinda put the Starchitects on hold for like the past year or two. So we haven't finished anything since then, and I didn't want to let anyone else lead because I wanted to be sure that every time we did actually work, we always completed stuff. Plus, I didn't want to burn my bridge, I wanted to have a mapping team to lead when I finally had the time to do it. But AqoTrooper's in charge now so he's doing whatever he's doing, I'm not a Starchitect anymore so I haven't been checking out how it's going. He's probably doing fine lol, I don't know.

Anyway, BlizzSCUMS was cool, and I know how it's like, hard as heck to get a mapping team going in the right direction so yeah, I can so understand. But gosh, wasn't it fun though? When you guys bring up the topic mapping teams I just think "yeah, those days were great! I really wanna get back into it!" Oh man I'm just so inspired right now, if only I had more time. But now I don't have a mapping team to lead so I guess it's not an option anymore. But gosh those days were so fun!!!! I wish I could just win the lottery so I could put my world on hold and then just do nothing but Starcraft.org and the Starchitects for a year. Oh I miss those days.
