Staredit Network

Staredit Network -> Terrain -> Suggestion for the next terrain-based contest
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DemonicDragon on 2006-12-13 at 05:01:49
Due to me being a bit short on minerals, being a just-now-active member of the forums, be it ever so slightly...

Anyways, the idea is to whip up terrain that one look at makes a person go, "What the ----?!" Simple stuff, like the famous stairwell artwork (which evades my name at the moment)...

I figure the contest would judge best on the most complex optical illusion that appears normal at first glance, but makes you question it at a closer glance.

If anyone's interested in doing this contest, I'd love to see the artwork that is completed, but, sadly, I can't host (lack of minerals, as said before, and a lack of constant time at the forums).

Well, I can see a contest like this being mostly sprite-based, if you're to ask for something abstract like illusions (tiles are difficult to be expressive with due to their rigidity). Most illusions are accidental as is anyway, so you'd be hard pressed to make a contest out of deliberate ones. Hard enough for most mappers to deliberately achieve even intended illusions.

This would certainly be a challenge. Probably too much so for most. I'd be interested in seeing it anyway if more people are interested, though. We could always use a bigger library of effects and illusions to work with for maps.

You mean like this?

Yes, I know it's poor. It just fixed this up quickly...

Everyone these days is just copying Rush's unnatural cliff-faces, whats with that? Is that the new fad and illusion that your good with terrain? Wierd.

I said it's poor, can't you read? blink.gif
I didn't eben try to be original in this.

Yeah, that was the sort of stuff I meant.

I figured stuff like this would be a challenge, and I'll see if I can do some myself... but with the way the camera is in SC, you'd think that opitcal illusions could be produced en masse.

Somehow, I doubt it will work. To me the idea just doesn't sound that appetizing. Sorry mellow.gif

How about impossible Escher-like scenes? Staircases that endlessly go down but meet up with each other, magic cubes, etc. Imitations of classic M.C. Escher paintings. It could be done.

Well, to the comment of "(tiles are difficult to be expressive with due to their rigidity)" I have to say that: "Well, the point of a contest isn't it make it hard for the people to get creative and win?

And anyways, you could always test them to various scenes like giving them a list and say:
Make this: Beach, spaceship (from the inside), a forest, and such.
And after that the people will sed you all their tries to those scenes and the one that has the most winner scenes wins... that would be hard and fun because you will be testing their creativity to various cases too and not just one

I essentially did the endless staircase, it's the quickly done example in this thread...

It is, but simply making it hard doesn't work. It has to have more than that.

That's a bit lame, Ratent. You could rather make an illusion that you are on jungle terrain in badlands or something.

Or make the illusion that the enemy is rushing your base of only four marines with 50 reavers two minutes in a game of melee. But then you find out that they are all hallucinations. tongue.gif

(Of course the real surprise in that is you now know they have a bunch of high templars and your screwed anyway...)

Hmm. I think this could work if the contest theme was more specific. Like "building illusions" or "nature illusions" or something like that. Most custom terrain is for illusions anyway.
