I have seen so many people say something along the lines of "That isn't music." And am simply wondering what it is that you consider music.

I have thought of ant sort of art (yes, music is a form of art) in a sense that was inspired from the Dada period and Marcel Duchamp. In that any form of art is considered so because we say it is. (L.H.O.O.K. is one of the most ingenious pieces of art in my opinion, but not for the artistic aspects we normally think of. wink.gif ) It is not a defined term, and anyone who says they have created music, has created music. Even if the creator doesn't think it is music, as long as someone, anyone, will listen to the thing as music, then it will be considered music.

But I see that there remains arguments amongst the rest of you as to what music is, and I'd simply like to hear your theories on the subject.

A group of sounds at least 15 seconds long that induces emotions within the majority of it's listeners and has generally pleasant melody, harmony and rhythm.

This is a me-specific definition; for others it can easily be 20 seconds long or something like that.

If you want to get technical, everything is music. Any sound is music (most of time with a non-metrical rythym). And there's always sound, no matter how small.

We're not getting technical, we're discussing what we personally consider to be music. Are you telling me that you personally consider someone being tortured music? 'Ah, music to my ears...'

Who says something had to sound good (or... not horrible) to be musical? It may sound abhorrent, but can still be considered music.

When your ears function in those conditions, let me know. tongue.gif

It's a personal question; whether it's considered music generally or not is not the point, it's what you personally think can be defined as music.

Music to me is when some form of musical sounds played and when good singing make a perfect combination. I don't care how sophisticaled the musical sounds are; as long as they mix in perfectly with the vocals, it's all good.

A band could have the most talented guitar or drum players, but if their vocalist sounds like an animal and that unhuman like sound does not blend in with their wonderful instruments, I don't call it good music.

Or if a band has a wonderful vocalist who can outsing anybody but then their guitars or drums do not blend in well with the instruments, again it's not good music.

Music to me is when vocals and instruments, no matter what level of talent they are, blend together perfectly.

Now as far as orchestra music, where no vocals are involved, then that solely depends on the talent of the instruments.
