Noteworthy is like.. a piano composition program (even though there are other instruments you can use.. a whole orchestra and stuff). The trial version is just as good as the real version (if you're running out of saves, just copy and paste the entire song onto a new file).
Depending on what kind of music you want to create (or edit) is the program that you want.. like for techno and trance you'd want the program Fruity Loops.

If you want to go pro, get Cakewalk. Professional studios use it.

Wrong, I use cakewalk (SONAR6) and it heavily relies on VSTi's. It's very consumer level. Cubase or Sound Tank will be your best creator on Windows, however, there are many more programs on Mac, including the best editor, Logic.

Fruityloops is pretty good and it has a nice free version

Yeah i agree FL6 (Fruity Loops Studio XXL Package) is easily the best, as you can ReWire other program like Reason and stuff into it, and as well as having it's own soundbank it supports VST's, and it's incredibly easy to learn. (Compared, to say a tracker program..)

im having a hard time with FL. The interface is nice but hard to understand and the sounds librairy is very confusing.
cakewalk costs money and noteworthy requires a good knowledge of notes, which i dont know squat about.

Pro tools Le is really nice. It comes with Xpand which has a lot of really nice pre loaded sounds in all instruments. The Plug in Hybrid (which you can prolly dl somewhere) is an amazing synthesizer.

www.acoustica.com
download Mixcraft. You can't generate midi files or anything like that, but you can easily create music loops using any sound file. you can also convert various sound files to wav format, and you have brilliant EQ control, as well as a range of sound FX, which you can customize. the trial version lasts 7 days, but then you have to pay, although you could do what i just did, and send them a message saying you've switched hard drives and you need the CD key again
