Hi,

I've just installed starcraft on a computer with windows xp and as soon as I click play, it instantly comes up with this message:

Starcraft is unable read a required file. Your Starcraft cd may not be in the cd rom etc. Can anyone help? I've had the same problem on a computer with 98, but when I installed a winfixer patch, it ran fine. I tried the same thing on the xp, but it still came up with the same message. Then I noticed that the patch was called Starcraft 98 winfix. Anyone know where to find a Starcraft XP winfix?

Cheers,

First thing first, is the cdrom in the drive?

Just to get the basics over. Noone has deemed it neccesary to use a 'fix' were are you getting this from? I have never heard of this 'fix' before..

The 'fix' helped me run Starcraft on windows 98, apparently it installed the drivers from a 95 computer onto a 98. That why I dont see why it doesn't work on Xp, I mean, its still doing the same thing?

Ive searched all over the internet for something that can help. A lot of forums say that they just installed the 1.14 patch and it worked. Others said it worked fine and others said it was a cd problem. I think its more of a computer problem. Maybe the home edition I have isn't compatible with starcraft.

Starcraft works fine on any Windows version from 95 and up (including even Vista).

Hmm, how much free hard drive space do you have? If you have plenty, you could make a copy of the CD onto your hard drive as an image file (with Nero, Alcohol 120%, or just about any other CD burner program) and use Daemon Tools to use the image file as a CD. As long as the CD copies properly to the image file, the copy should work fine.

Starcraft definetly works in all windows systems, I've tried it on ME, 1997,1998,2002,2004,2005

Try running with 98 compatibility and make sure you have the disc in.
