Staredit Network -> Computers and Technical -> Help on adding Ram and a Video card
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Nintendo_Confed on 2007-01-13 at 12:18:59
OK, i have 2 comps:
Comp 1 is a Dell Demension 2400, Pentium 4, 2.66 ghz, 512 DDR RAM, On-Board Intel Extreme Graphics:64 MB
Comp 2 is a Compaq Presario, Pentium 3, 2 ram sticks, one 128 mb and other 256. also has a nyvidia 64 mb video card which i have not identified yet.
(Note on comp 2: i cannot get it to start, so if you want to add on that then plz do!)

What i want to know:
1)If the 256 Mb memory stick from comp 2 with be compatible with comp 1 (note: the 256 mb ram stick was purchased speratly from comp 2 and was never detected by comp 2)

2)If the Nyvidia Video card will work better than the onboard intel extreme graphics controller.

I will have the Nyvidia video card idetified soon (long story on why i dont)

1) Need more information. You said 512 DDR RAM, I'm guessing this means 512mb but I don't know which type of DDR RAM it is. It could be DDR-200, 400, etc... Or what type is in comp 2. But seeing as they both sound like old computers you might be safe, you should read the cards themselves to see what kind they are though. But even if the cards from comp 2 are different they might still be compatible with your mobo.

2) I doubt it, but I don't know a lot about graphic cards.

I opened up the comp 1, took out the memory and on the side it said: "512 MB DDR 333MHZ. I dont know the type in comp 2 yet but i will let you know later on today. Comp 1 is NOT an old computer, but not new either, bought in 2002-2003. Comp 2 is from 1998 and i would consider it old.

who knows about graphics cards?

The Pentium 3 most likely uses SD RAM, which isn't compatible with DDR RAM...

Also, I can't really answer that question, you haven't identified the video card. I would assume the onboard does, because it probably supports a later version of Direct X.

Dell Dimension 2400 doesn't have an AGP port i believe.
Take out the video card from the old comp and tell me if its a AGP or PCI graphics card.

Question on the graphics card: did it come with the PC? If so, I don't really think it could be better. If it's a GeForce 2, it might be a bit better (especially with the onboard 64mb memory). If it's a GeForce 2, 3, or 4, I'd try it out - you can always remove it later. In any case, you're not going to get 50 fps in Oblivion with it tongue.gif

Man, it's weird talking about GeForce 2's when I have an 8800 GTX (God card).

You are correct, Dell Demension does not have an AGP port, it has PCI. However, i think that the graphics card is PCI.

The graphics crad did not come with the computer. when i bought RTC3, i needed better graphic to play it. i went and bought a Geforce (cant remeber which one) but it was AGP and did not fit in the PCI slot. Called a technician and he got me a different graphics card, the nyvidia.

You can't find anything that it says on the video card itself to identify it..?

ok i have identified the video card! Its a Geforce2 MX/MX 400, i put it into comp 1 and i disabled the intel on-board controller.
I have also found out that the memory stick from comp 2 is a 256mb SDRAM, is that compatible with DDR Ram?

the reason i couldnt identifiy it before is because my mom wouldnt let me take apart comp 2 but now she did.

You could always try benchmarking them using 3DMark 01 or something similar.. check game FPS's too.

I still think it'll be the on board..

No, your SD RAM and DDR RAM won't work together...

Death, onboard totally sucks. The newer Intel onboard might be able to "handle" a later DX version, but it won't be able to churn out any framerates on like any game. I think the GeForce 2 MX 400 might just give him a few more fps on some older games (you're still never going to be able to play Company of Heroes or the like, but maybe games like Call of Duty and Knights of the Old Republic will be more playable). For example, my friend's GeForce 2 handled CoD just fine (at 800x600).

I know onboard sucks. But so does the 2 series. That's why I said just benchmark them to find which one is better.

the onboard works wayyy better, anyways, i figured out that the geforece has 32 mb, not 64.... i played roller coaster tycoon 3 and i noticed a dramatic change in fps, for avergae 25-30 to 6-10

Hmmm, I bet my friend has a better version of the 2 series...
