ok what if someone made a map that was 2-D (like super mario or donkey kong)
the map would be like a side-scroller as in you would have a side view of like a zealot and he could run left and right and jump up. of course you would have to make a gravity system so that when he jumped that he would be forced to come down.

you could make like obstacles and enemies and it would be really fun to play.
so has anyone ever tried making a map like this?
would it even be possible?

I believe this Mario map might be what you're thinking of. I haven't played it, but it sounds like what you're talking about.

It was fun, but starcraft just isn't meant to be 2-D, if you wanna play a 2-D map, get a gameboy and play your heart out smile.gif

Although it is still a great idea, and I bet some people like it, I just like starcraft 3-D better than 2-d

A single player side-scroller with EUD conditions to detect your screen height and therefore use arrow keys to move would be possible. Perhaps crystals could also be used to make obstacles and the floor and such.

lol that would be awesome, but isn't it insanely hard to detect the arrow keys? and since you can't do EUD actions would the arrow keys still make you side scroll?

I suppose it would... Use it on the minimap lol. 2d minimap games!

No, detecting arrow keys is elementary. Pressing an arrow key moves your screen, and screen position is detectable by EUD conditions. Since spacebar does a center view, you could make a side-scrolling shooter with space = shoot.

The only limitation is that screen position conditions only work in single player since they will otherwise cause a desync.

We actually got one of that. It's called snake christmas and is made by Devilesk, our beloved banned user. No EUDs are used there, though.
PS: Snake Christmas won the July mapping contest.

It would be hard to make a Super Mario or Donkey Kong 2d game because it wouldnt look like one. A jumping system would be really hard, it would take a lot of triggers and wat not.

Actually 2d mini map games arent that bad. It just has to be a good mini map which shows where ur at, maybe have some basic stuff like red light green light. The color changes on the mini map and you can use EUDs to detect the way your arrow is moving.
