Staredit Network -> Terrain -> Ice Blend
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Wilhelm on 2007-01-13 at 20:14:39
Ice is such an underused terrain type, and as of yet, no one has even attempted to make Ice interiors. I've actually wanted to do this for quite some time, but I only recently tried.

This is outpost to high outpost, it can work Outpost to outpost and High Outpost to Outpost, the tiles are exactly the same. The only trickiness to this is remembering which tiles are supposed to be high outpost and whichare supposed to be normal outpost. The bottom blend uses doodads, in conjunction with DTs, and obviously still needs work. The main wall blend isn't the only one I've found, but it mirrors the nicest. The area supposed a quick attempt at making a bathroom (sinks and drainage).

I've attached the map as well, for those interested in improving/experimenting with/stealing the few blends I've found.

Man I'd hate to have to take a dump in that bathroom my arse would stick to that toilet seat. tongue.gif

That's actually interesting to know about the outpost tiles. It's just a shame you can't make them as "clean" as would be necessary for a convincing inhabited area, though. Nothing beats badlands or space for that.

Still, it looks great if you don't mind that part, or if you're trying to make an abandoned outpost interior. I hate having to use mud all the time with that tileset. tongue.gif

Wilhelm = COOL!
That blend on the bottom actually is quite superb for a look.
Unfortunately the bathroom only looks like counter tops to me, maybe with some vesphane tanks and such it could look feasible.

And the reason I've never really tried anything in the boodwar tilesets is because they are all rather precise compared to the basic terrains. I wih they had kept with tiles that all had similar side pixels.

Wilhelm its offical. Were together now.

I love your sexy terrain skills. <3

ADDITION:
Just found a better courner blend. Thought you might like to know.

Those blends are from Wilhelm's map he posted. All credit except for the new courner pieces, and the bottom of my second pic, goes to him.

That's pretty damn awesome, though there are so few that uses artic terrain, so it won't be that useful though, anyhow, it's a very nice find!

It looks really good, but as Chronophobia said, it won't be very useful. Nearly noone uses Ice tileset. The only maps I've seen are some open RPGs that nearly always suck.

What about The Thing: Ice? I think these blends could do nicely, and like you could make it in a sims-like game, and if you sit on the cold toilets too long u get frozen to them bleh.gif

That's amazing. I'll probably use this if I ever make an Ice Tileset map.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Wilhelm on 2007-01-14 at 16:34:46
I know people don't use Ice very often for anything beyond basic mapping, one of the reasons is that there's been hardly any extended terrain work done for it.

I'd like to see more stuff for it, it's an interesting tileset. It's also got alittle more diversity than others (Space, Installation, Ashworld), because it's got a decent mix of natural and artificial terrain.

I've tried some other stuff, so I updated the map a bit.

Please, if you make your own edits to someone else's terrain map, retitle it.

i like the concept but its way too blocky

I say an Ice contest. I would gladly put in some cash for a prise. Anyone else? Ice terain needs to be used more. It is way too unused. I think it rocks.

300 mineral in for me I guess. If people want it, we could base it around the concept of unusalness. Making new terrain out of old. The room for example..

Do you mind specifying exactly which piece is blocky, and if so, where? I don't see any major blockiness in either the path or the room terrain.

Here is a light modification of Wilhelm's blend. I used other tiles to do the lower outpost->high outpost part in the bottom, and covered it with sprites. It's unwalkable, and I think it looks better.

I like it, looks great. But sprites arent always an option in maps due to other factors. However i personally think Jaff, that if you did a brand new indoor-ice The Thing map, it would be awesome. smile.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Wilhelm on 2007-01-18 at 21:38:31
The problem is that

A: It doesn't look like it's actually "higher" than the terrain, and
B: You're relying on sprites! Let's see it without! wink.gif

I know the blend I came up with isn't the greatest, but I was specifically tying to make the upper level look higher than the lower. I'll look at some alternatives.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by JaFF on 2007-01-19 at 02:38:34
I can do as you did - use dark templars.
But I have to agree on the second part - it does look on the same level. In game, though, it blocks the vision of ground units, so the player will (I hope so) understand that it's actually higher. wink.gif
