I lol'ed at this story: linkage

Then again, who knew? All in all, these crazy people are making video games more dangerous than flying in airplanes. I predict that soon more people will die from video game related accidents than car crashes. The solution? Ban video games and save lives!

On a (semi)serious note, you can't really blame anyone here, can you?

Roflols? She went to the contest, it's her fault.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathawk on 2007-01-15 at 16:57:05
Although I do believe it is her fault, I feel bad for her death. She had good intentions for doing something for her kids, and now the kids are motherless.

its those crazy nintendo people making up some dumb contest so it was her own fault. Jeeze now i see why most of the people at my school hate WII and why they like the PS3 and xbox.

No, it's because society is stupid and don't have any fun without violence, something Nintendo consoles don't really have.

Oh yeah, because Nintendo sponsored the contest.[/sarcasm]
It was just a local radio station contest. The only thing Nintendo did was make the Wii. The radio station bought a console and held the contest.

Contests like this are stupid. Before anyone start them, they should check the risk that someone gets hurt or, like here, dies. Idiotic radio station. But dunno if I would set my life at risk for a Wii though.

I know plus the fact its a Wii. Boy those crazy die hard people who will sacrifice there own life. Pathetic

The culprit here is not the woman, who simply cared for her kids. It's not Nintendo, they simply made a good product. You can't blame society.

All the blame belongs to the radio station, who could have done a much safer competition.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by PwnPirate on 2007-01-16 at 23:08:20
You guys honestly don't understand what you're talking about. This woman probably just thought, "Oh this is a funny competition, hey my kids were talking about those games, wouldn't hurt to try". Obviously if she had known there was a chance of fatality from drinking water she wouldn't have entered. She just wanted to make her kids happy and she actually died. This is a serious matter and it isn't very funny at all, especially the fact that the radio station didn't go to any lengths to check if maybe there were problems with their contest that could cause fatalities. Three children just lost their mother to idiots, how terrible would that feel?
The mother obviously wouldn't risk her life with three children to leave behind, and she obviously knew nothing of the risks. She wasn't a fanatic, she wasn't even getting the Wii for herself. She wasn't crazy. She wasn't stupid. You people make my blood boil.

Today there was irony for me. In English class my teacher had brought in an article of the news story. She read it to the class and guess what. Everyone though the lady who joined the contest was pathetic. She had died of water intoxication because she had drank so much water. "Why on earth would anyone risk there life like that!" a student said. She could of gone to the store and bought one and most likely she wanted to wii so she could sell it. But hey thats what people do when there desperate for something silly like that. Now she'll never live again. And in the end she came in 2nd place. Wow, dieing and not coming in first thats hilarious. I was going to post more of what the students said in my class but I assume the nintendo fanboys would cry and get angry. Pretty much that was pathetic.

and no I'm not a sony nor a microsoft fanboy

The radio station should be blamed for this for holding a competition which is really bad for your health. It is also the woman's fault for being involved in this contest.

I have come to the conclusion that there are five possibilities in this situation:

1. You people don't read anything logical.
2. You people do read, and if anything contradicts your position you ignore it.
3. You people don't actually read anything at all aside from the first post.
4. JordanN_3335 is indeed a "sarcasm master", as stated in his user title, and he is being so ridiculously sarcastic that it is impossible to detect his level of seriousness (least likely, don't get your hopes up).
5. Any combination of the above.

They should've made a funnier contest like Who can hold onto the Wii box the longest. In the contest they'd all put their hands on the box and whoever stays there the longest wins biggrin.gif

That would hurt. No sleep and no toilet, no food or drink. Ouch. Not a very good idea. People would have died for that too.

You got the first part right i am the master of sarcasm but the rest of your post doesnt make any sense. Clearly I stated the contest was crap. Like anyone with a brain would know that going 2-8 hours (can't remember the exact number) without taking a leek would die. Thats like saying if they held a contest for a PS3 and in order to win you have to be the last one to commit suicide. In conclusion it was both the woman and not the radio stations fault for those people risked there lifes over a machine that you could go to the store and buy.

Dude, wat are you talking about. The lady probably didnt even know if that would kill her or not. Its not like she knew she was risking her life, because if she did know id bet you that she wouldnt enter the contest or probably give up when she reached a little bit before her limit.. And she was doing it for her kids, you cant blame her for trying to make her kids happy and infact. Why dont you go to a store and see if there is a Wii.

YES, CAUSE SHE WAS DESPRETE TO GET ONE! You can buy one at the store cause they are in stock. And how can you not know what will kill you and what wont kill you. Sure it's a contest but dont people know that forcing the body to not urinate leads to water intoxitcation! I'm not pointing fingers but just like what sonic the hedgehog says "It's your body" she was in control of her death.

QUOTE(wikipedia)
A person with two healthy kidneys can excrete about 900ml (0.24 gal)/hr.[2] Consuming as little as 1.8 litres of water (0.48 gal) in a single sitting may prove fatal for a person adhering to a low-sodium diet, or 3 litres (0.79 gallons) for a person on a normal diet. However, this must be modulated by potential water losses via other routes. For example, a person who is perspiring heavily may lose 1 L/hr (0.26 gal) of water through perspiration alone, thereby raising the threshold for water intoxication. The problem is further complicated by the amount of electrolytes lost in urine or sweat, which is variable within a range controlled by the body's regulatory mechanisms.

Water intoxication can be prevented by consuming water that is isotonic with water losses, but the exact concentration of electrolytes required is difficult to determine and fluctuates over time, and the greater the time period involved, the smaller the disparity that may suffice to produce electrolyte imbalance and water intoxication.

The evidence is clear. A desprate woman entering a contest were she didnt take any limits of the amount of water she consumed.

Okay, so if she was in control of her death. I doubt she wouldn't let herself get killed. AND lets go back to the article. Lets see if it said shes desperate to get one, A twenty-eight year old Sacramento mother of three has died of water intoxication after taking part in a local radio competition to win a Wii console.

QUOTE
Jennifer Strange was found dead on Friday at her home after taking part in a contest named “Hold your wee for a Wii” at the studios of radio station KDND 107.9. The competition involved drinking large quantities of water, with the last person to go to the toilet winning a Wii console – currently out of stock in most of North America.

An Associated Press interview with another contestant, named James Ybarra, claimed that contestants were initially given eight ounce bottles of water to drink every fifteen minutes, with larger bottles being used once contestants began to drop out. According to Ybarra, “They told us if you don't feel like you can do this, don't put your health at risk." He described the victim as “a nice lady” and that “she was telling me about her family and her three kids and how she was doing it for her kids."

According to Wikipedia's definition of the condition, water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is upset by a rapid intake of water. It is unclear how serious a danger to the contestant’s health KDND knew the competition to be at the time.

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, claimed to the AP that station personnel were “stunned” when they heard of Strange's death. "We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said. The incident has already been widely reported by mass media outlets around the world.

Well, I dont see anything about being desperate. Oh wats this,

QUOTE

well that shows how desperate she was and how she was obviously doing it for herself and contradicting herself about doing it for her kids.

I have a few of my own opinions. The Wii sucks, PS3 is a PS2 with better graphics and internet capabilities. Xbox 360 always and forever.
Now that I've gotten that over, people are saying it's the woman's fault for going to the contest. Well it's not her fault that the water was poisoned, was it? It was whoever put the poison into the waters fault. The mother was trying to do something for her kids, and ended up dying because of it. So now the kids don't have a Wii, and above all else, they don't have a mother. Did she go to the contest knowing she was going to die there? No. So stop saying 'it's her own fault' and blame it on the retard that put the poison in the water.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Doodan on 2007-01-27 at 01:06:48
The water wasn't poisoned. She died from water poisoning. In other words, drinking too much water. You can OD on anything.
