Staredit Network -> Miscellaneous -> Blizzard hints at new Starcraft
Report, edit, etc...Posted by n2o-SiMpSoNs on 2007-01-18 at 21:21:47
Hopefully this wasnt posted but, i didnt see it so here :

Game Developer Blizzard Entertainment's long-anticipated expansion to World of Warcraft has gone live. Initial impressions are ... not available, since all 8 million players are currently in the Outlands. I'll take that to mean the servers for the most part have not melted yet. At a Burning Crusade launch party, a Blizzard exec revealed we may see a new StarCraft game very soon. But today is all about WoW. If you're not playing, and want to live vicariously, check out WarCry's extensive preview of the expansion or take a peek inside the Collector's Edition. You could read designer Jeff Kaplan's comments on new features at FiringSquad, or Shane Dibiri's talk of inspiration at Next Generation. One new expansion a year, eh? Some folks are already looking to the future where we probably won't see WoW on consoles, but may see it with security dongles. 0.1% of the Earth's population can't all be wrong.

One of Blizzard's gold-encrusted execs has said that he "hopes" there will be another StarCraft game in the near future.

"As a Starcraft player I can tell you that I hope it wouldn't go a decade - we launched Starcraft in '98 - I hope it wouldn't go a decade before we stand here and celebrate the next Starcraft together," Itzik Ben Bassat told crowds gathered at World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade's official launch event in London last night.

"Don't forget that we have two more franchises that we love - Diablo and Starcraft," Bassat had declared.

"We haven't forgotten that we have these two franchises, and what I can tell you is that I look forward to stand here in a few years, or whenever it's going to be, and celebrate with you the launch of the next Starcraft or the next Diablo."

According to our people on the ground, the Blizzard PRs "looked a bit uncomfortable" around this point. So that's welcome to the Internet the hard way, really.

Whether all that means Bassat knows something that we don't though, or whether he's just teasing or speculating, is impossible to say - but Blizzard is notoriously secret and perfectionist about its work, and it wouldn't be a massive surprise to discover a sequel lurking in development somewhere.

My friends, my brothers, my fellow starcraft players. Rejoyce, and hail, respect and await. We have not been forgotton.

There is no way this is happening by 2008. My guess is December 21 2012.

SC2 is going to suck... I can just feel it... sad.gif

Yay, Blizzard might possably be doing something other than Warcraft. That itself is something to celebrate.

I'll quote myself on this one.

QUOTE
I'm not too moved by the statement that Itzik Ben Bassat, Vice President Business Development and International for Blizzard Entertainment made.
First, he was in London, meaning that he is part of European Blizzard division, which means he has no direct access to development. Since he doesn't have developers at his side, all he can do is speculate since we know that Blizzard will not release anything outside of it's HQ. A recent post by a WoW Forum CM stated that he/she had no clue about any current Blizzard project besides a patch containing some of the WoW: Expansion dungeons that didn't come out.

Maybe Blizzard has been developing SC2 for a long time now, but chose to keep it as a surprise and used Warcraft to cover it up... O.o

PS, shouldnt this go in the games section?

As Nintendo_Confed already said, Blizzard could have well been developing the game some time ago. Unlike WoW (announced in 2001 and released 2004) and WC3, which was announced around the time Diablo II came out, Blizzard has been learning from these mistakes.

WoW:TBC was only announced at October 2005 and was originally scheduled for Q4 2006, it only got delayed by 2~3 months and considering the amount of content that expansion has (25% more landmass in the new continent plus 4 new zones in the old content and 2 major cities, more instances than previously in the game before, new profession, races and whole lot of new systems). The game was already in the making well before it's date of announcement, possibly since the game itself was released, but they kept quiet knowing what usually happens with year old delays.

Blizzard almost had their expansion released on the original date, but Beta testing revealed a few problems that had to delay the release in order to finish. You know Blizzard always has delays in it's Alpha stage, and Beta's are almost always on time.

I like that idea they have been working on it, just being hush hush. But then again I dont want to get to hopeful.

Yeah, don't want to hype it like Halo 2. xD

No matter, once its offically announced with the release date I'm gonna pre-order it!

I personally think they will work on Diablo or start making new types of games before they make Starcraft 2. Their are already some decent a d current Real Time Strategy games out that Blizzard would have to compete with. I believe Starcraft 2 won't come out for at least 2 years.

Well...just so long as it's not massive multiplayer or an RTS/FPS hybrid.

No, it would not. At the very least, not entirely that. Denying us the ability to make and play our own maps in StarCraft II would be almost a sin.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Deathawk on 2007-01-20 at 11:31:29
And I think some of the novelty of SC was that you could play quick games, and stuff like that.

If they're smart enough, they'll give us map making for SC2, because the current formula is very successful.

I Blizzard doesnt act dumb, and makes SC2.

That'd be like...Pownage.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Joeman12 on 2007-01-23 at 19:25:11
A Sc2 would be amazing but I think that the hardcore community (most of us) have hyped it up too much and will expect more than Blizzard can offer. If they dont make the graphics cartoony like WC3 i'm in.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Undead-Fox on 2007-01-25 at 19:27:08
I hope, if anything, they take a similar approach as Westwood and EA did with Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Superb graphics, and wonderful gameplay in my oppinion of what I've seen {and played from Tiberian Sun}.

Heck, it might even be cool if they did the SAME as EA and used live action cinematics! ^_^ {Loved James Earl Jones as General Solomon}

...>.>...

...But alas, I know this will not be true. I mean... come on... o.o Blizzard doesn't have to do anything for the next millenia with how much money they've made from:
World of WarCraft Game
World of WarCraft Trading Card Game
World of WarCraft Merchandise
World of WarCraft South Park Episode...
...
And come on, Blizzard even took down their homepage for StarCraft: Ghost.

I'm with Farty on this one, if they make ANYTHING besides WarCraft, I will be a happy {and surprised} fox. ^_^
