Staredit Network -> Terrain -> Have we forgotten the purpose of terrain?

Please take your time and post comments about why you think I asked this question.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by JaFF on 2007-01-24 at 16:32:24
I don't make terrain only for myself. Currently, I'm helping one person with terrain and hope to help more.

Point of terraining = make available for people to make maps (be that me or someone else)

Why you asked the question? You are probably fed up with the fact that most of the terrain done today is BS done by newbs. Those newbs make terrain to make the maps "l00k k3wl."

To fix the situation, maybe make a tutorial, Wooden? Be active yourself, and others will follow.

I do make terrain for others to use, some of my terrain might not really be practical or something, but I make what I think are neat blends that people can use in their maps, the only thing that's hard is to get people to use them in their maps. It's also about to impress othersa and myself too, but not as much.

All in all, that's all terrain really is. Before the use of extended terrain maps were exactly the same. The only difference is that they look cooler.

This option isn't in your poll. tongue.gif I make it for entertainment.

to impress people,
Report, edit, etc...Posted by spinesheath on 2007-01-24 at 18:21:21
I only use terrain for my maps. Except for inverted ramps intended for melee usage maybe, but that's a different subject.
I don't mind people using my terrain though, but noone will find a map of mine at the moment tongue.gif I still chose the last option.

Terrain imo is not entirely to impress people, yet to some extent it certainly is. When you make a map you usually want to impress, and you should impress with the map as a whole. Looks make a big deal on the whole though; even if one doesn't admit it, the first look usually has a huge impact on one's opionon.
That's why I want my maps to look good. Not impressing as of "look I found a new blend noone has done before" but I want to maintain a line throughout the map, a terrain that fits the atmosphere of the map and supports it. Of course it has to be functional (walkable areas etc.), but I don't have to mention that this goes first, do I?
The terrain shouldn't be "great" at one spot of the map, and the rest of the map is most ugly ISOM or even squarish terrain. Rather have less good terrain, but all over the map, continuity. That way you don't really notice it unless you explicitly pay attention on it but get a feeling that the map looks good.

That's about it, I hope I was able to make myself clear, kinda hard to express what I think about such stuff...

only for my maps...pretty self explanatory. I've made some terrain for friends before but its not as good making what I want for myself.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Rantent on 2007-01-24 at 19:04:26
I make terrain for two reasons.
Either I have a vision of an effect I want to create, for example I picture a castle rising out of a cliff or something.
Or I just found a neat blend and look for ways it could be made into a neat blend.

The blends themselves serve no purpose other then to enhance the feel of the gameplay.
As such, most of my blends are deleted shortly after I come up with them as they do very little in enhancing any part of the game.

When posting terrain or showing it to others, you are trying to impress others. No one wants to hear "this sucks. you suck", so the terrain that you see from them is either their best or something that they thought was good. Even though the goal for some people is mainly to get help so that they could improve their terrain, there is still that small primal urge to say 'my stick is bigger than yours'

Everything about StarCraft terrain. Show off your terrain skills with screenshots and maps!

However I think you guys should stop being so hateful on other peoples terrain like "it's block" or "this doesn't blend well with this" and make it noob friendly.

Isom should be rated on isom, rect on rect and extended isom on extended isom, you should have 3 different criterias, not just 1 high expectation that only a few people can meet.

Tell you the truth, i terrain for all those reasons.

I love to have neat effects in my map, double cliffs, waterfalls, bridges, etc. They enhance the maps capabilities, and they give the player that sense of "wow" in every step. I intend to help others, give them ideas of what they could do in there map with terrain, and then when i see a map that has nearly the same thing as i put in mine, i don't go and say anything about it, i like to see others getting influenced to do great things. Last but not least, i am amazed by terrain, Blizzard never intended us to do anything like this, not even square terrain. So to see people like WoodenFire making these awesome impressive things make me want to make them, and if i actually complete it, it gives myself that sense of "wow".

@Jaff
My activity is that inspiring? I will probably try to take more screenshots of terrain and such. I would also take this opportunity to say that I am going to release a whole slew of database-type maps.

Jungle Tileset
Cliff Database (Shows a wide range of cliff-works using many simple and highly advanced blends. )
Doodad Database (An updated collection of only perfectly blended custom doodads.)
Interior Database (Interiors used in RPGs which can be used for an almost unlimited amount of applications. This basically creates different types of 'walls' other than the ones presented in Jungle.)
Ramp Database (Hundreds of components to mix and match for forward, backward, and all other directions of ramp construction.)

Those are just to name a few. They are all around 90% done. I also have about 10-15 additional terrain maps (256x256) of custom ISOM / Extended Hybrid/ Fully Extended maps. All of the Jungle tileset.

***Oh, and for those who have no idea who the hell I am. These database maps and soforth will have thousands of blends you've probably never seen before. They are NOT to be confused with a collection of SEN's pile of blends... They are MY personal collections collected from myself & of a few noteworthy individuals.

@Shocko
I think that the opposite should happen Shocko. I disagree that a terrain forum should be anything but professionals showing professionals. Terraining is an art.

Some people arent very good terrainers. They find it hard to find blends and hard to implament them once they find them. Im making alot of template maps in order to help people, complete with step by step examples and different finished products.

Yes, it is.

I'm thinking of writing a tutorial about Installation, and releasing my maps. I still gotto finish them, though.

Well then... lets get some more submissions into the Terrain Ladder. You automatically get 50 minerals for entering, and after you reach a suitable position, you gain minerals for climbing.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by JaFF on 2007-01-25 at 12:30:23
It's still open for submissions?! Can I submit terrain that was already shown in a topic in this forum, or I'll need to make new terrain specially for the Ladder?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by WoodenFire on 2007-01-25 at 14:53:38
Previously created terrain is accepted... are you retarded? Read the ladder...

If it was art it would be under the creativity forum, but seeing as it's not art -- it's not.

Stop thinking so highly of yourselves like because you make good terrain you are better then everyone, it's almost as sad as when some people from the art creativity section thought they should have their own member group.

I honestly have never heard anybody say "l00k k3wl.". And why is it when somebody's impersonating a noob they always make them use 0's for o's, 3's for e's, 4's for a's and what not. That's not a noob, that's a loser with a big ego. And isn't the point of making new terrain to make it "l00k k3wl."?

In some points the "newb" are right, the whole purpose of terrain overall is for it to be handy and pretty. It's the whole first look and the surface of the map.

I'm surprised at the depth of these arguments and comments. A '+' for the terrain forum.

A long time ago, I decided to make primarily utilitarian blends, e.g., blends that serve a purpose. Essentially, this means blending together as many terrain types as possible, and letting other people make variations on blends (though sometimes I've doddled in that area too).

I've never really finished a map, so I suppose I'm really only making terrain for other people.

I make terrain to impress myself mostly. It feels good to make a nice piece of terrain, much better than completing a trigger system. As I don't release many maps I have in making, I wouldn't be impressing anyone else.

Make use for other people to use your terrain in there maps. Making it beautiful.
