Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> State of the Union Continued
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2007-01-24 at 22:31:53
Okay. I seriously didn't watch it because I can't stand to have more of Bush shoveled down my throat. Therefore, I am going to pretend that he doesn't exist for the next two years. I will, however, watch in glee as Democrats strike genius moves and turn this country around. What was the State of the Union about?

I only read the criticisms of it, which was imho more suited to my entertainment tastes, but you have to take everything politicians say nowadays well salted. Maybe this will turn into another 20 page "Bush sucks" thread. I wouldn't care about that (it's interesting to see so many people get angry when they're agreeing with each other). Then again, maybe it will for once remain a serious discussion.

In any case, we don't have a new direction. Honestly, soon lack of popular support for this "sham of a war" (Fela's English teacher, 12th grade) will be the reason the "insurgents" are winning. Just to piss off the neocons in my school, I like to call them "freedom fighters." happy.gif Then they get all like, "You bleeding ass liberal," and the 95% of us that are sane have a good chuckle. Anyway, Bush isn't my president. My president wouldn't suck as much as he has.

Well actually Felagund I wouldn't call foreign insurgents freedom fighters. They are there to kill Americans.

I wouldn't call Sunni and Shiite death squads freedom fighters either because they are murdering each other.

And lastly I'm kind of disturbed that your teacher would be giving his opinion on a highly politicized war to the class. He is not paid to influence his students on his take on politics, he is there to teach you how to read and analyze books and to write good/clear essays and grammar. Despite what you might say, yes, students are influenced by their teacher's side comments.

Lol, my politics professor here in college wouldn't tell us what wing she was. But after some of the statistics she's presented to us, many people assumed she was more left leaning. Because one of the statistics she gave out one day in class, she said that highly well educated people tend to vote more liberal than conservative. As soon as she said that, there was almost like a huge commotion in our class of over 250 people.

Did you guys see that video of senator john mcCain sleeping? I mean, if you're on national television, can't you just stay awake?

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1...+sleeping&hl=en

Poor planning or just incredibly boring speech? Probably a mixture of both. Not like a state of the union was ever interesting, though.

I thought it was incredibly hilarious, does someone actually think they can get away with sleeping in that thing? Especially someone as popular as him.

Rofl. If he does make it into the presidential race, his opponent(s) are going to use that video to its fullest.

It was my English teacher who said that, and she is paid to get us thinking.

Honestly, if you were there, wouldn't you rather be sleeping too? I mean, after hearing the same speech six years in a row...

Wow, that's nothing new, to be honest. A lot of other people were napping as well. In the UK, the Deputy Prime Minister (John Prescott, who has been involved in a string of controversies including the time when he punched a farmer) has been caught asleep while Tony Blair has been making a speech. I don't think it's uncommon.

Felagund, I think that is a poor excuse. There are many more unpolitical ways of getting kids to think. Such as the humor in the book "Angela's Ashes" even though the book is extremely sad.

It looks like he was looking down.

ADDITION:
Oh, is any one else outraged at the fact 20,000 more are going?
I don't think enough of you realize how awful this situation is.

Hmmm, the civil war has taken in excess of 600,000 lives (1/3 of 1% being U.S. fatalities), our involvement has drastically hurt international relations for decades to come, and our economy is bogging down. Hmmm, you can't say a lot of us hadn't seen this coming. closedeyes.gif

Maybe it's what Bush deserves. I just hate what he's done with the American image. It's an absolute atrocity really. I'd like to see him tried for crimes against humanity. That would make my day!

I will be on the Bush's side. What I think he has done isn't really bad, but also good. Even though the war has cost alot of money; It's no surprise that the government called Democracy wasn't gonna be rocked when wars lasted.

Bushes speech was boring. I don't blame McCain for sleeping though if I was thinking about running for president I wouldn't sleep during the state of the union address. If you try Bush for crimes against humanity charge all politicians with it, and you would probably have very few left =).
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Lithium on 2007-01-27 at 20:53:45
And crime against humanity in my view is only handed to the loser. Not to the winner. Apparently, Bush still is the winner. On a side note- All political speeches are pretty boring to some extent.

Sometimes that rare politician comes along that is intelligent, knowledgeable, and charismatic at the same time. Unfortunately, Bush is none of those, so his speeches are understandably boring.

If you don't think what Bush and his administration has done is bad, then you are ignorant. Sorry.

I am sorry? Bush made tons of mistakes. I never said I denied that. Theres no need to label me directly like that.

Although, it wouldn't be a discussion if there were only one side to a discussion, right?

They haven't done anything good.

I didnt read the rest of this topic, but I needed to respond to this:

The State of the Union is meant to enlighten those who want to learn about what will happen. Apperently, you do not want to. THough the speaches sound the same, it is not his fault. I would have shot my speech writer if he could not find a synonym for the word 'fight' or 'terrorist'. It not that his speeches are the same, its that his writer writes the same words in a different order.

Second, I am totally for the war. But that is not part of the debate, so I will dismiss your comment. The war was neccissary and it has cost us very little. The only reason that it 'hurt' our economy is because the American liberals finally have a reason to slack off.

The person is only ignorant if they fail to look at both sides of the problem. 'The man who has read one book knows everything. But the man who has read two has many questions.'

Its mainly because, though he got good grades in school, he is very poor at deliberation. (Kerry was the exact opposite, just to show the other choice.)

Jesus. That kind of talk gets to me.
It's not off-topic if we talk about bush has done or is doing, this is a state of the union topic.

If you think I'm looking at one side, you're wrong. Bush has made minor changes to improve things, but honestly, those few things could've been done quicker, and more effectively. Thus, he has not done anything 'right' in my mind.

Don't flame all liberals like that. You truly are a bigot if you see that way. Btw, you're also just plain wrong. Our economy was beat to crap when we spent tons of effort in a war that cost lives and put the Middle East in a state of chaos.
