microsoft adds stuff like extra toolbars and all that so you buy a computer upgrade to make ur computer run faster, even though its just their software
I don't see what your saying. I can install IE7 without any extra toolbars. I have no extra toolbars anywhere I don't want them. If you have extra toolbar's it's probably not from Microsoft but from some other company.

It's not, really. I'm think DirectX isn't the instructions, but DirectX is how the instructions are sent. I'm not totally sure, though, you'd have to ask somebody more knowledgeable in this area.
Direct 3D and Open GL are API's that programmers use to interact with the graphic hardware interface. Blizzard and ID are basically the last companies that design Open GL games for the Pc(Blizzard however only uses Open GL for Mac). Blizzard can easily do it due to there Storm.dll setup. John Carmack(ID owner, insane engine programmer), after working with the Dx9 API(Doom 3 -> Xbox), has said it is his favorite API(something like that).
Now interacting with the hardware is incredibly complex. Both Open GL and Direct 3D create a much more simplified(still quite complex) API for the developer. They have taken two different routes on it. Open GL's route makes it better for things outside of games, such as modelling programs. Direct 3D however has been dominating the gaming market.
Once Microsoft hit Dx8, DirectX has been an awesome contribution to pc gaming.
Direct 3D is part of DirectX.

Also, OpenGL games work fine, it's not like you need DirectX.
To play DirectX you either are going to need Wine or DirectX. Wine will perform with errors and a lot slower. There are very few PC Open GL games being created anymore. So yes you need DirectX if you want to play most Pc games.

They're certainly a lot better than Windows 98, but honestly Macintosh is still superior in terms of crashing and security and so on.
I'm sorry, most crashes that happen in Xp are due to other developers problems. If mac had as many developers(including independent) creating programs as windows... then you'd probably see some piss poor programs and drivers that crash a lot of things all the time. Also throw in Mac doesn't have to take in millions of hardware configurations, it'd expect it to be more stable(it's like a console). You have to give Microsoft a pat on the back for how stable Xp for what it has to do.
About security? We wont know, no one makes viruses for Mac because it would be retarded, due to how small your target population is.
I just reinstalled XP last night.(On a different hard drive to split my XP installation and Files). Activating and everything went fine. No problems.
