"Superstrings, hidden dimensions, and the quest for the ultimate theory"

Have anyone else read this book or saw the 3-hr PBS special on it that was few months ago?

Basically, it says that the universe is made up of much smaller particles, smaller than the atom, smaller than the protons, neutrons, and electrons within them. They are simply strings. Maybe not the kind youre familiar with, but the idea is similar to it. And within this universe of strings resides.. iirc, 11 dimensions.

When I hear the word "Strings" I think of programming.

Now you got me confused.

I think of strings as like the stuff on yarn...

I had a friend who was into superstring theory. The idea is that all matter is connected by these miniscule strings spanning dimensions or something. I know that the 11 dimensions play a huge part in the idea. I think Orson Scott Card used this idea when he wrote about a way of communicating instantaneously with people hundreds of light-years away in his book "Ender's Game", and the following sequels. His idea was that a string could be identified and directed to a receiver that could read and identify vibrations on that particular string, and that the strings were somehow beyond time. Pretty cool idea, if you ask me.

Well, in my boring-ass science class we watched the whole series of Elegant Universe. The whole theory with the 'strings' and all is interesting, but why would you want to believe that life is just another science experiment?

Well, I've always felt that science was more likely than magic and pixie dust, like most religions claim.

Whether or not it's a "science experiment" is subjective. Your perception of the universe seems to be only how it relates to you (an experiment), and doesn't consider the big picture.

That are the 11 Dimiensions?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Nozomu on 2004-08-19 at 21:25:00
According to the higher levels of physics, yes. Crazy, huh?

btw its string theory not superstring theory. In any case string theory is old now (about 25 years old). M-theory which is now used has more than just 11 dimensions. There are also many variations within M-theory there are some with hundreds of dimensions then there are ones with only 6.

The strings in the 'Ender quartet' did not exceed time. They worked by splitting those tiny particles but when they were split they still reacted as if they were still together. So a vibration on one end would be registered instantaneously on the other side.

I should have a better understanding of this (M-theory) later on once i'm in my astrophysics class. hopefully the thread will still be here. wink.gif

nozumu nice u got limewire or just like its logo haha.
anyways. the strings dont connect matter, theycreate it (OOOOOO I SED CREATE MATTER SUE ME!!) basically they are matter in its purest form.. energy. they "quiver" at different frequencies to produce different types of matter. more insight to the created of matter and stuff can be found in the book angels and demons which is pretty frikin sweet. anyways these strings sometimes leave paths to different dimensions and universes by "quivering" at a frequency that quickly seal up (or so some scientists think), but hell who knows its is just "String THEORY" (major emphasis on theory) it still cant explain singularity (creation of the universe) which was its original goal, explain everything including singularity. i hope i have bored and annoyed you with my informative post. thank you and goodnight!

It did not explain singularity but it did connect relativity and quantum mechanics. Something which scientist were trying for years.

What are the 11 dimensions BTW?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Helios on 2004-08-20 at 02:49:50
Well you have the 3 spatial dimensions the 4th dimension is time, and the other dimansion have not all quite been defined. Not that i'm currently aware of though.

blah, weird censored.gif , who thinks up these theorys?

Yeah, I remember seen part of that. It was very informatiove and interesting. Cool nonetheless. The universe really is quite amazing. If you do something big, it could have a small effect on the rest if the universe. If you do something insignificant, it could change the universe forever. Let's say I create the first race of androids that can learn and evolve. They learn to become like humans and eventually kill off the entire race with a giant war. Now, for something insignificant. Let's say I fart. My fart causes people to get away from me and go to the drinks. They then all start drinking the sodas. The oven in the kitchen is on. They all fart near the kitchen causeing a giant explosion. The explosion causes the hole in the o-zone to grow faster and faster. The hole grows 1.25% faster after that blast. That has caused the Earth to be consumed by radiation from the Sun's rays 1 year before the human race completed their device to fix the hole in the o-zone. Sad, huh cry.gif ?
