Staredit Network -> Concepts -> What Makes Maps Played...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Revelade on 2004-08-18 at 19:22:06
I am making this thread to try and explain how the majority of bnet people think to join games. Please reply if you think you have some valid information.

What works:

players vs computers
colored text
simple gameplay
5 or more player slots
tried and abused trends (defenses)
titles based on familiar references (Grand Theft Auto, Gone in 60 Seconds)
titles based on sexual content (Sexy Pics Part 4)
instructions on the force name
short download time
teamplay
games that don't kick one person at a time
short to medium games (15-30 minutes)

May work:

players vs players
4 players
new gameplay

Doesn't work:

mission critical briefings
complex gameplay
long download time
3 or less players
games where one person annihilates all
long games (hours)
lame titles (Pig RPG)

Whats wrong with stacked text? It looks awesome as long as its done correctly and isnt used in conjunction with "Heavily abused color tags".

Doesn't Work:
Almost anything with a storyline.
Making someone think.
Almost anything hard to beat.

Works:
Bad grammar and spelling and a very small amount of text and instructions. biggrin.gif
"l337" titles.
Unit names shortened to common references in force names, briefings, etc.
Anything that with little effort could guarantee an advantage.

You should rethink that statement, with the creative edge of Panzer's Raccoon city or Normandy, the challange is what makes people love that map.

as for the sexual references in the works section, we must consider some things.
most players in sc are males, varying in ages, but the average range is around 12-19, the existence of parents with firewalls and other things to prevent the "corruption" of their children over the internet and the need of some people for pornography of some people caused this. also, the public release of bmp2scm should have seen this coming, it is a tool too easily abused.

What never can work: 1 player maps...

What always works: Maps where u just kill, run, heal, change units, kill ...etc.

You realize that all of the maps with the sexual content IS coming from the creator of bmp2scm himself that was probably his purpose of making the tool... We as a community however, can use it for better purposes.

Heh, that's because you're currently making a 1 player map... Rethink it so that it's more than one player or else it will be short lived on Battle.Net (no it's not a threat, just a suggestion).

As a competitive player, I want a game that takes after a poker saying:
"It takes a minute to learn, and a lifetime to master." These are the games that suceed on battle.net, and proof is evident everywhere. The most popular, and my favorite, UMS ever is by far Sniper Paintball, but few actually understand how technical and precision demanding the game actually is. (Guide Coming Soon...)

Works:
Quick Skill Based Action
