Any sort of War Machine. Think Gundam, if you will, or maybe giant mechanical spider, just to get some images in your mind going. The sheer amount of resources itll require, and the energy to power it, will be enormous, but it would make for great defenses, and even an icon of power in this time and age. I mean, the United States is like top dog among countries, but it doesnt hold the same status as it had decades ago. Times are a-changing. Weve already had two major world wars in half a centuries time, not to mention many smaller conflicts constantly brewing. It may not be now, but there will be a time when a country needs to reassert its power.
Quick insert: another great of example would be the "
the biggest tank that never was".
well a couple of misiles could probably take down one of those anyway so its rather useless since it would cost so mutch and get wiped of kind of easily.

A huge war machine could be easily destroyed. An armed militia that wants to succeed could easily have a more effective fighting force if it hired soldiers with RPGs with the money they could have spent on a huge tank.
Just like in Freedom Fighters, but that's a game.
Look at the German War Machine in WWII they whooped our ass in the first battles, then we, wish high morale just kicked their asses harder.
it won't be worth it financially, a war machine can be built with a lot of money, but one missle in the right place can destroy it.
Well, it looks like I got here kinda late for this to be very productive but....
I think it would be possible, just not a very smart idea.
Yes, its massive size makes it them easy targets. But these arent your ordinary tanks vs anti-tank missiles. When I say War Machine, I mean the equivalent of a bossfight on the battlefield. Strapped with enough armor to withstand several blasts in each spot, and packing enough heat to take out entire battlions.
And this isnt necessarily now, or the very near. Maybe much later, like 2050.

that's true for almost anything.
also, if it were say a gundam, it would be so un-agile.
^my friend wanted that to be placed in my post. I don't know why...
well i sure think it is
it is very possible BUT i think it would be destroyed really easy BUT not fast

If there was a massive war machine, it would just get nuked. It wouldn't be able to get out fast enough.
Real wars aren't fought with huge machines, as romantic as the idea is. Real wars are based a combination of these factors: The number of troops, the level of training of the troops, the difference between technological levels the opposing factions, and each faction's nuclear arsenal.
Uness this huge war machine has some sort of advanced defense system it would be highly vulnerable to attack.

no general would nuke a single machine. Firstly if the enemy general commanding this war machine had any sense of tactics he would use the war machine in a highly tactical way, in other words placing it close to a city full of civilians.

the german war machine was not some huge machine and it had little to do with morale, it was just a few strategic battle that "threw the wrench in the gears" in a way.
When it all comes down to it a huge war machine unless it is very manuverable like say the metal gear machine otherwise it would be a waste of money. But you have to think about it a tad more, a standard jet can cost around a few million each to build/develop. This huge war machine could easily be a few hundred million or even a billion. If they were to spend that much money on a si9ngle weapon they would make sure there would be no weak spots, nothing to take it down easily. At first it would easily be an unstopable machine then people would start wising up.
one thing you guys havent considered on anti projectile capabilities for defence against missiles is the laser tech. that the military has been researching. it can easily pin point and destroy an artilery shell being shot at it. i taped the first publicised test but i lost it when i reformated

if you used that to defend against missiles the only other option is sabatoge or close range bombings (guy running towards it with C4) or anti-tank mines.
quick note: HOW AWESOME WOULD IT BE TO BE ABLE TO RUN AROUND IN A MADCAT (mechwarrior) AND BLOW CRAP UP!!! DUDE!!!!

What really stops you from building a huge machine is a power source.
You could build one, and give it big guns and defensive systems, but it would have to be plugged into its own power plant if you want it to move anywhere.
If you want a big machine that can destroy anything, get a tank

A tank cant destroy anything, in todays world a tank isnt as useful as it once was. Not when there are planes and anti-tank artillery all over the place.
But like you said power source is a problem. Any huge war machine would drink up gas like nothing, so you have to use something else. Some sort of small Nuclear power plant.
Well like its been said it isnt worth making a gian huge machine of doom but what about a tankor slightly bigger then a tank machine for defense well if its that small its would'nt that mych armor cause it could probly get pretty fast to doge missles remember missles and godly ether or it could shoot the missles down like ShadowBrood said.
Also with these you wouldn't need them to take on whole armies theyd be more for the scare effect like kill enemy moral. I know for one that i would never try and run up to plant a C4 on a bug walking mech type thing with guns a balzing
A tank can destry most anything. People, buildings, other tanks, the ground...and many other targets!
But what can a tank, or even a giant war machine, do that a big ol' missile can't do?
Building a really huge powerful war machine is not very smart. Its like wasting resources on 12 bcs instead of like 80 marines. Lots of medium-class units could probably defeat a large war machine easily.
Good analogy. I've been trying to put that thought into words for a while now

.
12 BCs can kill 80 marines easly. I just tested it
If you want to see alot of marines get killed just watch this map:
Heh! it only takes 7 BCs to kill 80 marines
In the next 25 years, what kinds of war machines can we build? Let's take a look into the vast world of science fiction to see some neat ideas:
Tanks:
C&C: Generals idea - use lasers to destroy missiles before the missiles can hit
Also, just a ground-impaired vehicle, make some fast, anti-infantry tanks. It'll explain.
This tank would have several rocket launchers, machine guns, and grenade launchers. Perhaps auto-lasers could use the Generals idea to shoot down other missiles. There would be no swiveling turret or huge 1/10 meter cannon. This would make this tank an effective AND speedy anti-infantry vehicle. Perhaps some Humvee-style ports for troops inside to fire out from could be added. It might be armored much as the other main-stay tank, but without the extra weight it would be much faster.
The mainstay tank would be like its lighter counterpart, which is more of a specialist tank, but this war machine would be used to utterly screw any heavy opposition. Building? Fire that 250mm shell armed with explosives! See some towel-heads? Use lasers to cut them down to size! Lasers own everything. With nuclear reactors their power supply is nearly endless, so no re-arming! They can easily pick apart missiles from far away (I'm talking about hundreds, if not thousands of miles) so think of what they will be able to do to anything else?
Is it even possible to make lasers taht strong within 100 years let alone 25???
They use lasers to cut things these days, im sure is possible
Ya but the lasers they use to cut things are mostly small and for surgery/ cutting metal not sniping enemy ballistic misslees out of the air form a hundred yards......
I think you see my point
It's easy to beat a war machine.
Just have someone hand out huge amounts of beer to the enemy and get them drunk.
While they're drunk attack them and they wont retaliate cause theyre drunk.
Beer has an answer to all.
