A new problem has arisen from Microsoft's new Service Pack for Windows XP. It prevents certain ports from communicating (port 6112 for StarCraft if I remember correctly), and the UDP packets that StarCraft processes cannot pass through. Thus, you must fix it (ironic, isn't it?). Click.

Before most people say "OMFG MICROSOFT SUX BALLZ IT BORK3D SC!!!!!!11111111", hear this:

It's just the firewall. That's it. It's enabled by default and you can turn it off AND the Security Center service along with it (since it will complain otherwise). I had a great laugh when I saw one of the comments to the same story on starcraftgamers.com. This is the exact post (copied & pasted):

QUOTE
this seems almost as  censored.gif ed up as when a friend of mine blocked a virus from coming in to his comp with a fire wall... the virus was sent from microsoft...

... Hopefully, SEN readers will know at least SOMETHING before posting and realize that those posts were complete bull censored.gif .

So, basically, don't complain about the topic since everyone hated Microsoft because they neglected security. Now that they've included a decent firewall and decided to turn it on by default (good decision, since most people probably wouldn't have looked at it), people are complaining about some programs "not working" (well no censored.gif , your firewall is blocking some packets, ever thought of that?).

...and no, I'm not "pro-Microsoft" in any way, I'm just stating the facts.

I hope that is the answer to my problem.
I'll try and install SC on friday since I have so much homework and practices during the week.

PS: Don't delete or move this topic anywhere so I can be able to find it and make the adjustments with the link.

when yoshi updates to v4, and if he keeps all topics, the posts will be re-numbered so that the server can clear up any un-used space in the mysql drive. sorry Beer

umm, that is the point of a firewall?

Apparently, a "virus" (no, not a port scanning signature or anything else that is actually supposed to be detected with a firewall) was "coming in" to his computer. So, apparently, something (his friend?) initiated a transfer that downloaded a "virus" from "Microsoft" (?), and the firewall was so cool it blocked the transfer (for some reason), and even scanned the file for viruses and said that it was coming in from Microsoft (of course it didn't give the IP address of the source instead, who does that anymore?).

...and if you say he could have found out the hostname/done a whois, I really doubt that, since a person who will wouldn't have said "this seems almost as ed up as when a friend of mine blocked a virus from coming in to his comp with a fire wall... the virus was sent from microsoft..."

Now, I don't know about you, but to me it sounded like a n00b trying to bash Microsoft.

Omfg, I hate service pack 2. How do I take off Security Alerts? They freaking suck and they're annoying. Every 5 seconds this pops up: "Do you want to view the webpage?" "Do you want to continue downloading?" "Do you want to unblock this?" Omfg, I can't stand it. I want to burn my computer now.

*Edit* I believe I got this problem because I was using PC-Illin and Windows didn't recognize it. Oh well, problem solved. If you have something like this click on the Security symbol, go to "See how Windows Security alerts you," deselect everything. Then I clicked on Anti-Virus software, and a window opened up. I clicked "don't monitor" this. Problem solved. Case closed.

OK. Now that everyone agrees, SP2 is for the good, so stop *trying* to bash MS if you have no reason to.

Btw, you can also turn off the whole Security Center service altogether if you want to (and if you know you're not going to need it).

Just reboot. Get Linux and burn your Windows CD.

If it's a pain in the ass to you, you haven't taken your time with it. It took me about an hour and a half to update my comp, clean all the retarded backups of whatever the installation left me with, check my settings, turn off the Security Center service (which you would know how to do), and make everything independent of it before then.

Then, I just came to this website on Opera (Mozilla, Firefox also works, and no, not right after installation tongue.gif) and checked for any changes. Turn off the BITS service/Automatic Updates (is it that hard to check manually?) if you don't want extra crap that you have to worry about.

Btw, good luck playing StarCraft on Linux. It's more of a hassle than than doing the whole SP2 configuration thing (which doesn't take more than 10 minutes, the SP2 config thing I mean). Personally, I hate running extra emulation crap (not that I'm calling WINE crap) after installing Linux as you suggested, when I can play it (and all other games) on a native Windows box.

Well, that program is a trojan horse downloader (or a virus, reports vary), but one thing is for certain: it wasn't SP2's fault that your comp was locking up, rather than it was your fault since you've got a trojan/virus on your comp to begin with. It's like you're installing a new firewall on an already infected comp and then blaming the firewall if something malicious/unwanted happens on your system.
