Staredit Network -> Serious Discussion -> Uses Of War

I suppose if you look at it, war has been a part of world culture since the first real cultures emerged, from Eygpt and Babylon, and its spread through Europe, even Asia and the Americas, its history has always been centred mainly on its War History.

But i am not going to ask if war is good, but rather wars uses, be them a Pro to you, or a Con to you.

War; a useful part of society
Wars were commonly fought over economic reasons in the past, and again in the present day, because people needed their food, water, iron ore, gold, stone and such and if their neighbours had more of one material, and diplomacy, never being a strong point of your culture you invaded, and defeated your neighbour, your people would have an increase in their economy, either at the cost of human lives, and/or economic resources.

This would have benefited those people, although those conquered or defeated may have felt differently, and helped them grow as a people. These growing states would make the future, and through the large community, science and society would grow and help expand the thoughts of the people.

Greece is a obvious example, each of its cities states always worked with their armed forces, but that wasn't to say they didn't, with time, expand into other areas of society. Athens was the home of modern Philosophy and Art, Thebes built some of the great arcitecture of its time, while Alexander's and his father Phillips people wrote the book on tactics to controlling populations. These were the people who developed sewage systems. This was all made possible though war, because it brought more resources to the people, made them riches, gave them more land, allowed expansion, and construction and time to put their minds to other uses rather than growing food to survive and fighting.

Cons will be added soon, please give thought to this!
Maybe you disagree, thats fine, give examples why and prove your point!

I detest the idea of war, in all of its forms. No amount of money is worth killing people, and that's what most wars are about these days. And don't get me started on the idea of religious wars.

The Art Of War, hmm.

I think the biggest pro for war is technological advancement. War far above anything else advanced not only weapon technology but society as a whole. For in every war there has been people have been killed in a different way.

No matter how horrible the outcome of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, without the attack of pearl harbor in WW2. Or WW2 period we could easily not have nuclear power today. The same with a lot of other advancements, like jets, satellites, submarines, the internet.

Yep thats right the imnternet was originally set up by the U.S military, only later was it released to the rest of the world. The biggest example is the "Cold War" even though it involved no actual combat it still put the U.S and the former U.S.S.R into a race to see who could advance the fastest, one big outcome from that is NASA.

No offense to anyone but war is a good population controller. The planet would have much more people than it currently does now.

The only bad thing that comes to mind right now concerning war is maybe the Holocost. Which really didnt have a purpose., unless you were brainwashed by Hitlers propaganda.

you should have said the dawn of civilization, because there were cultures before egypt and Babylonia. Its civilization that gave birth to war.

Not just the Holocaust, but EVERY human being who has been killed. War kills people. 'Nuff said.

Like I said killing people in war is a population control mechanism. S no its not enough said not even close.

Im sure the idea of a few million people dying is beyond you anyways. Nothing personal but it is for every person, 1 death is a tradegy but a million is a statistic beyond our capacity to even grieve over. Besides people die all the time, what difference does it make if that person died from a bullet to the head or died from some disease.

War was around even before human civilizations. Ants had wars due to scarcity problems with food and land.

Maybe you can write a million people off like that, but I certainly can't. War isn't a population control mechanism yet - we still have land to go around. Wait until we run out, then you'll see real war. Right now war is about resources, which are a totally different story. There certainly are enough resources to go around, but most of them are in the hands of the wealthy, who refuse to share them.

No its not just me, but can you honestly say you can feel something for the millions that have died ? I dont just mean the thought of a million people is ohh so horrible, I mean can you actually feel some kind of grief or sadness ?

If it were not for war the population would be much higher than what it already is. Yet you say all these resources are in the hands of the wealthy ? I think not, the wealthy have the money/power to help the others they just choose not too.

Actually, yes, the deaths of so many people weighs heavily on my mind. I don't feel grief, but I do feel remorse and a sense of disappointment with humanity. I feel particularly bad about the 40 million people who died of starvation under Mao Tse-Tung in China in the early to mid 1900s.

Uh, about the resources thing, I agree with you. They have the resources to help, but choose not to share.

Weird, its the same here, I feel sorry for everyones losses.

Anyways, I completely hate war, I'd never join the army voluntarily, cause I don't believe in war and stuff, but if I had to then yeah, I would. sad.gif

1 - Tragic
10 - Sad
100 - Loss
1000 - Heroes
10000 - Gods!

War is part of society, and is important, you may feel sad for all these deaths, but so what, people die all the time, its just life ending, think about those 40 Million, if somehow you'd kept them alive, then another 40 million somewhere else might had died because they didn't get the food, or more.

And if you go by Religious thoughts, then they all Sinned and deserved Death, like everyone, got to love Religion, it just wants to kill us all!

War is a fundimental part of the human society, and you can't change it. It's been built into us, in our genes. War is a product of different opinions. A product of different lifestyles. A product of human nature. It's sad when a human dies. It's even sadder when many humans die. But won't they all die sooner or later?

War pushes us forward. That's it.

the only positive aspect of a war is that it boosts the economy...momentarily...sometimes...and even that's shaky
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mpstark on 2004-09-03 at 09:07:43
That isn't true. War boosts the economy, science, and education also. War is bad, yes. But look at it from a non-human view, we discovered most of our most used thing in the military and most of the programs (like NASA) were developed because of war.

there hasnt been war in norway in a long time... thats why its the richest and best country to live in on the world...

Yes war kills a lot of people
---> Hence you want to have a technological advantage to stop the death total on your side.

Wars will always have casualties. ALWAYS!
But you can never stop wars... its impossible. It's a good concept, but can never be achieved due the human nature. It's the same as...oh i dunno... Stoping terrorism smile.gif

I dont think theres anything good about war. People die, the next day, more people die, the next day, a town gets blowed up and people die. Then it gets repeated for years. Get together and be friends!!!!!!
