Next version of Windows set for 2006
Advanced storage technology dropped from release

SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. said it plans to release the next version of its Windows operating system as expected in 2006, but it will not include much-touted new technology for organizing and storing data.

Tom Button, corporate vice president for Windows product management, said the company hopes to release the new Windows version, code-named Longhorn, in the second half of 2006, about five years after the current version of Windows was released.

With Longhorn, Button said Microsoft does plan to improve the way people find things like e-mails, photos and documents.

But the company will not be ready to include an even more advanced system for sorting, storing and finding data. Instead, it will begin testing that system about the same time it releases Longhorn and make it available sometime down the road.

The ability to find and organize data on a personal computer is becoming increasingly important as people are able to amass more digital information. Right now, finding pictures, e-mails and a Microsoft Word document, all related to the same topic _ say, a vacation in Hawaii _ is time-consuming and cumbersome. These new technologies aim to make it quicker and easier.

Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, said the company probably had little choice but to reduce the capabilities of Longhorn if it wanted the system to be delivered on time. But he expects Microsoft to be able to offer the more advanced capabilities relatively quickly, perhaps as early as 2007.

Microsoft would not give a time frame.

Rob Enderle, principal analyst with the Enderle Group, said not including the much-touted storage capabilities in Longhorn "isn't a good surprise." But he believes it will be much more critical for Microsoft to be able to include them in the next version of Windows Server software, due out in 2007. That's because servers tend to hold much more data, making advanced searching and sorting capabilities more necessary.

Longhorn also will include new technology for enabling better visual presentation, such as three-dimensional rendering. And it will include ways to communicate more easily with other systems, such as Web-based applications or mobile devices.

But Button said users will not have to upgrade to Longhorn to use those capabilities, since applications that use them also will be able to run on Windows XP.

Cherry said the company probably decided to make the new technology compatible with the previous version of Windows so it could entice developers to make new applications and still find a wide enough audience.

The analyst said the move could make it less likely that some people will buy the new version of Windows, although he suspects that Microsoft will add other features to Longhorn that make it more compelling.

Hoo boy, like we needed more Windows. Then again, its been a few years, and money is always nice.

But to reduced certain aspects of the OS just to release it on time? What, with the bugs and holes in the code, open to malicious attacks, etc that we've been hearing about too. Starting to sound like gaming corporations :T

Seems like the new OS to be released in 2006 won't be a big thing.
I for one say it won't be worth buying

If its more secure than the previous installments of windows then people will buy it but if its not then microsoft just wasted 5 years on a os

Better Visual Presentation - Not all that important, people are already used to waht they got
Better Communication with outher systems - Lots of people are getting DSL or Cable, making for faster communication and more data transfer, this sounds a heack of a lot like a USB cable connected to mobile devices.

I think Microsoft is just trying to pull a fast and easy buck before they release the real thing in 2007

is it just me..or has anyone noticed that as windows releases more OS, the newest one just gets worse and worse.... huh.gif

95 pretty stable, I rarley had crashes
98 (SE) the best one made by windows I've ever seen. Crashed only 3 times in my life that i've used it, which is about...4-5 years.
2000 Not bad, but not as good as 98
ME do I really need to say anything about this???
XP it crashed when i didn't do anything. how crappy can it get?

i'm not an OS expert and there are way more OS made by windows but those are the main ones I can get out of my head right now.

I wonder whats going to be so good about this one. I mean the only thing I see XP accoplished was that a lot of older programs couldnt be loaded on it.

Heh.... reminds me of that hidden feature. There's a registry key somewhere you can enable to crash on demand with a Blue Screen of Death by using a certain keystroke. biggrin.gif

The newer versions of Windows OS's (Xp, 2000) are probably slower BECAUSE they need to use more memory to run more features...

and thats why they are bad. you people need to accept the fact that XP sucks. it uses too much memory for not enough functions. and if you think XP "looks" cooler, then just use a theme on one thats more stable. mellow.gif

Or you could just keep win 98 and just download Ashton (for free) it has all the options Xp does and more much more actually. The only reason I have Xp now is because it came pre installed.

Btw Beer Keg, you were not legally supposed to copy that, just look at the bottom...

I think that XP uses like 32+ MB of memory, while 98 uses 8. Awesome, eh?
EDIT: Looking around, I saw that something said tha Microsoft says to run XP, you should have 128 MB of memory to run it. I think we know the answer to why XP sucks tongue.gif

Uh oh...

Beer's gonna get sued by Windows! blink.gif

Meh, I don't care about computers much anymore. My parents never bought good ones and they seem to suck even more after we get it. I don't got that kind of money to buy a good computer either.

By the time that this new Windows comes out I'll either be dead, or not caring.
