Staredit Network -> Concepts -> Request on improving X-tra editor
Report, edit, etc...Posted by StEfreet on 2004-09-04 at 00:42:13
I think X-tra editor is our all time favorite, right?
well at least until someone like Clokr_ makes a super cool editor

So if you could improve it just a little bit, we wouldn't need any others!
So I brought a few suggestions for the X-tra editor.
I know you are not the original maker... but, i think it's gonna be a piece of cake to you. smile.gif

only 2 things:
1. Starcraft built-in free sounds feature
2. fixing a bug in a trigger "create units with properties", You can't click on the property

and if you can...
3. protecting a map with Proedit
4. making buildings stick to the grid
5. custom team colors

and some more.... probably i'm pushing too far
6. enabling square tilesets
7. combine 5 editors within the X-tra editor

w00t.gif Wouldn't it be so cool?!?!?! w00t.gif

Yes it would be cool, it could also have sprites, an option Sf style trigger system, have it optional to make buildings follow the grid, and have square terrain and other goodies we havent even thought of yet...

Virtually Impossible to edit Xtra with these features.

Starforge has these features because it was coded from scratch.

Xtra is just a very heavily modded version of the original staredit. I beleive it was edited through a hex editor? So think of it this way.. nobody has the source to X-tra.. so sprites and such cannot be added in?

I dont know what you can really do by editing hex, as I am still learning it, but I am pretty sure you cannot edit X-tra like that.

SCXE reads from different MPQs than regular StarEdit - thus units have different properties in SCXE (buildings are considered flying units, and thus can be placed anywhere, etc.). The changes only occur when you play an edited map in StarCraft that reads from the original MPQs. Thus, adding new menus and features to StarEdit is impossible.

IT has a Warthog a Ghost a Pelican Dropship a Shade and a few more, let alone Halo2.

Anyway, we're getting off topic.
"I think X-tra editor is our all time favorite, right?"
I'd have to say that Starforge gets the medal, really.
I can only find a couple flaws in it that are better in SCXE, and even then they're small, and besides that it's still in construction anyway.

Not through hexing, actually through Arsenal 2 you can do this
You just edit all the values of the unit size to 1x1 because u cant do 0x0 and u just save the .exe and make it into an install going off of starcraft as a standalone program

yes that would be nice.... QUICK SOMEONE GET PRO AT HEX EDITING!! we need this editor...

Why dont you lazy people just use starforge and x-tra editor 2.5 -_-;;

'Cause they want an easy way out... the lazy 1! happy.gif

Folks, simply get used 2 what u've got. Search if u wanna look 4 other options... or better yet, do it urselves. wink.gif

A reference thread maybe would be of use... Links, apps n' related stuff in map editting (maybe modding) would be nice thing 2 do in a sticky at the maps showcase section. clapping.gif

Edit reason: Or a simple link in2 that tutorials area amidst a thread. That way ppl could suggest stuff 2 place in2 the tutorials section faster. smile.gif

I strongly Disagree. Starforge works better than X-TRA in just about every area. Also, you would have to get source code or w/e to change it and I haven't seen General Mengsk since CS died.

Hey, retard.. that's not even a bug! You can't use more then 63 or 64 (I forgot which) create unit with properties. After that it stops letting you use the option.

SC X-tra is BASED on StarEdit, and it is never going to be modded to be like StarForge. You have to start from the ground up to get something like that.

A lot of you are saying StarForge is good... it's not. The triggers are a pain in the ass to edit, because even though it's text based, it still requires you to use your mouse. The trigger plugin being created for SCM Draft 2 has a MUCH better system of text editing. Also, StarForge doesn't even create an ISOM section in the map, it crashes a lot, it screws up your sounds, I HATE using it. The only thing it's good for is bounds and defenses where you never have need for isometrical terrain. Even then, you probably use X-tra to do the triggers, I doubt many of you would bother to learn the syntax for it.

I prefer SCM Draft 2 for most general things. StarForge for heavy duty square terrain editing, sprite placement, and exact unit placement. SC X-tra for triggers or anything else, or if I don't want to use SCM Draft 2. The problem with my system though is, SC X-tra removes sprites. But I have to use it cause StarForge's trigger editing sucks... sad.gif

You crazy.
Triggers are so fawkin'g easy to make in starforge. I don't know why people complain about it so much.

Did you know that turrets shoot missiles?

I use Starforge to make everything besides isometric terrain. I think X-tra is a piece of crap, it's exactly like Staredit.

Scmdraft and Xtra are the best for me! tongue.gif

Scmdraft is better for "terraforming"
I just love Xtra triggering system!
Report, edit, etc...Posted by MillenniumArmy on 2004-09-14 at 22:43:50
Starforge is basically the improved version of X-tra editor, so to request on improving X-tra editor is like requesting to make another starforge editor.

However i think you should have the option of reading the triggers in starforge either in the way it was like in scxe or just how starforge has it already.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by SaLaCiouS(U) on 2004-09-14 at 22:55:46
Army what are you TALKING ABOUT!? !?!?!?! Your pure ignorance offends me on a so fundamental a level that I can't think straight. StarForge is not like an improved X-tra editor at all, it is an entirely new program made from the ground up designed to edit .chk files and compress them in an scx or scm.

I still hate StarForge's trigger system regardless, just because it forces you to use the keyboard more but still require the mouse sometimes. I wish it worked like a real programming language (as does the trigger editor plugin for SCM Draft 2) where you wouldn't have to use the mouse at all. Damn mouse.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kenoli on 2004-09-14 at 23:13:22
Oh dear god you have to use the mouse!
pfthhh..
Its kind of annyoing that you cant tab through the trigger window, but its not like the mouse is hard to get to...unless you have a wireless mouse, and you lost it somewhere. lol

It's considerably easier to navigate through a list of things like triggers using the keyboard if it has a reasonable system than having to use the mouse...
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kenoli on 2004-09-14 at 23:53:04
You have to use the mouse to make triggers in x-tra, and you have to use it a little bit when making triggers in starforge, the rest you just type.
Hey whats this topic about anyway? :/

The X-tra editor isnt going to get fixed/changed/updated ever. Theres not even a need for it. If you want to place sprites, make square terrain, change player colors, or whatever, there is another editor that you can use. X-tra is a nice little editor for beginners, and its going to stay that way.
