How long do you think Earth's resources will last?

And when it does run out will there be an alternative for that resource?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by mobomojo on 2004-09-05 at 23:28:27
Its easy to just sit and ask question. How about providing even the slightest amount of background info for a change?

First off, youre a bit vague with just the term 'resources'. Do you mean collectively EVERYTHING the earth has to offer, or more like nonreplenishables? Next, does 'alternative' means man-made replacements, or another natural resource substituted?

Either way, we can probably go at least another hundred years before we can start panicking.

Man I hate it when people always have to find something thing wrong with a post.....always...

Yeah I meant any major resource.

Two possiblities.
1. There will be a massive war. Such is the result of overpopulation (phsyical space is a resource). The time in which our laws and order can hold that back will run out eventually. Darwin's idea of Natural Selection will come into play and technology will destroy us.

2. Technology is fast enough to save us. We maximize what we already have on Earth. Also, we may expand to other planets.

Well one kinda dumb possibility, it's dumb but still give it some thought, is that someone may find a way to expand molecules thus making a big ray, also it might work the other way around that this machine could compress molecules and have a shrink ray.

lets just say if we don't create a fusion reactor that can be controlled in the next 50 years, usa will be down big time. and if not discovered in the next 150 years, earth will b so screwed. then there is oil, which if we freeze ourselves so we can skip the next 2 million years, it might be ok, but we can't so that is nonreplacble and we need to find an alternative... yea humans suck. maybe someones god will come down and save us all *cough*
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Daigotsu on 2004-09-06 at 00:17:30
Well I wonder if we'll even be able to use all the resources...like what if a asteroid of some sort hits the earth then KABLOOMY.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Templaren on 2004-09-06 at 06:10:31
yeah they also say that if they dont find more oil... they will be out of oul in 40 years
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Screwed on 2004-09-06 at 06:39:33
in fact it is less than 30 years. However someone travelled using altered processed vegetable oil. However if we use this method it will still not be sufficient to supply the whole world.

You complain about my nitpicking and then you introduce a friggin' ASTEROID into the equation?! ermm.gif

We ourselves wont have to worry about that since we'll be long dead when that time comes around.

Water: 70/90 year before we have to fight for good water!

Wood: 200/300 year

Iron, Alu, gold: 1000/2000 Year

Fuel/gaz: 1000 year

Food: Cloning and incubation will always Live!

Starcraft: When SC2 will be released :affraid:

Just make a bigass spacestation with lots off fusion or fission reactors.

"Food: Cloning and incubation will always Live!"
Though, sadly, this might not be the case for several places, seeing as some people consider it to be "playing God" and to be bad...

Fuel/gaz: 1000 year

are you insane? fuel and gas won't last us another 200 years!~

the water problem can be fixed if we start some time soon to clean everything up but people are too lazy and one person cannot make the difference. i saw we start a cleaning water force!~

I think that we will probably be creating antimatter in large quantities within 100 years. This is a 100% efficient energy source and will solve energy problems (and cause other problems though). All you have to do is introduce it to some matter and 'BOOM!'
So finding a failsafe way of containing antimatter would be of the utmost importance.

Scientific progress is exponential.

give earth some stasis chambers and we will be fine... well, just the ones inside them

The big ray idea won't work. Stuff will be bigger but still have the same amount of mass. Making a molecule bigger is like creating matter. It can't be done. The human race dosn't have much time left. With all the new, deadlier technology and constand wars, there is bound to be WWIII, which could wipe out the human race and Earth if it involves nuclear weapons. If only the Zerg were real. Humanity would unify and be destroyed. I would be an infested hero.

Running out of oil is not such a big problem, soon as they find an alternative power source* for cars, all oil will be used for is to make plastics and styrophoam.

*They already have an alternative power source for cars, and I'm sure in a the next decade they will find a way to mass produce it. We have plenty of it.

Water -> Hydrogen.

The real problem will come when all the technology is there and the transition from gasoline stations to hydrogen stations. (LOTS OF MONEY REQUIRED)

i wouldn't worry about the earths resources, by the time they run out, we will be gone
Report, edit, etc...Posted by DarkDeath19 on 2004-09-13 at 22:11:38
Why dont we just clone oil, or gas, I mean we have the possiblities if we can clone a living sheep i think we should be able to clone non living oil...(if that makes sense)
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Roaring Emu on 2004-09-14 at 01:33:56
Of course some will run out. Afterward most of the human population will wither, cripple, or die. Later, creatures will struggle to survive. While that is happening, their bodies are adapting to other substances in their environment. Then they will go after other resources. Then the same thing will happen. Those will run out.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Andy on 2004-09-14 at 15:36:17
It will be a long time, at least another century. We are gradually moving to nuclear power, and to wind power. The reason the change is so slow is that we have everything set up to use fossel fuels and it is hard to change it over to a different form of fuel.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Staredit.Net Essence on 2004-09-14 at 15:39:10
We'll probably find our way throught cloning anything we can and mass reproduce it... Not like we're stupid.
