Im thinking about doing a High Detailed fabulous quality game, but the problem is it will be around 20-40mb big(Im going all out in sound effects, music). Im making it 1-2 player and a pretty long game. Think this map if was found to be very good would catch on battle.net? Im doing it mainly for myself, and a friend, but was also wondering about how it would do on Battle.net. DL would probably be an average of 6-11 minutes for a cable to cable user. Whats your guys view on this? Would it catch on? (Since its only 2 playered you only have to share dl with 1 other person).
i think it could catch on, if its a really good map then i would wait 11 minutes and u could always upload it to SEN and ppl could dl it off of here
Your asking a question, assistance fourm.
I don't have high a high speed connection, and i dont want to wait for 40 hours to download a lot of lame music. I think map music sounds like crap and is completely stupid. But i know most people like it.
If your trying to make a 'High Detailed fabulous quality game', consider making the file size of the map as small as possible so that people are more willing to download and play it, also try to keep it from lagging slow machines. (don't add lots and lots of 'effects' to the map, and dont overflow it with units) And, if you are going to add music, don't make different music for every different area, try to reuse them as much as possible.
If it turns out to be a really high quality game, and not have a huge file size, i think it could catch on to b.net (just remember alot of people on b.net are stupid and might not understand how to play
)
Its more of a concept, thinking up a huge map on if it would be appropriate for battle.net, etc. If anyone has any ideas as to extra ways to add quality, please tell:)
Btw, Size isnt an issue. Like I said, Im going all out. I dont care if this thing is rediculously huge file size. I can easily have someone host the file, and have my friends dl it for play. And its only 2 player, so its more of a play with your friend game. Im just wondering if people will want to spread it to other friends to play:). Oh and the music, its Class A Quality:)
It would only catch on if you could DL it elsewhere. 11 minutes DL on a heavenly connection is crazy and nobody would wait except for close freinds.
No B.net pub is going to wait that long for a download. Not to mention they probably won't even understand the map if they do. Your map would probably only end up being played by people around here.

No a large map won't catch on very well no matter how detailed it is. This is because players many times judge the map before they play it. If the download is slow it must suck they think.

He isn't asking for help, he is asking opinions there is a differance.
Yeah, Ill probably reserve this map for US-Be$t only. (Run a mapbot while Im at school on that server). Ill do some more background work, get all my audio and storyline ready, and start the actually mapping sometime this month. Thanks Guys.
I made this graph of Popularity vs Quality. As you can see, as quality goes down, popularity increases exponentially.
ADDITION: Also, there is NEVER any reason to make a 40mb map.
Quality times Popularity = 1. Use that to figure out your map. That is what Salacious is saying since he graphed Hyperbola (xy = 1)
btw, do you think SC will ever be upgraded to use better sound formats. Heck, if they did the map would only be a few Megs big.
SC won't be upgraded for anything like that ever, it's a finished project for Blizzard. The only reason they made some patches was probably because the WCG still included it. And even if they could, you wouldn't be able to use MIDIs. Ever!
