Staredit Network -> Website Feedback, Bugs & Discussion -> Do You Want SEN To Have Its Own Chatroom?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by KiLLeR2001 on 2004-09-11 at 14:33:28
Ok this is meant to be a serious post, so if you have nothing constructive to say then please don't post.

First off, I'd just like to say that Yoshi is doing an outstanding job on this website, and I'd like commend him for that. But now I think it's time for SEN as a community to expand even more, and form a well-known and respected chatroom.

I have chosen mIRC to be the chatroom client of choice for SEN simply because it's the best, and SEN deserves only the best. With mIRC not only can you send files, have private conversions, and completely customize your client... You can also manipulate and code your very own mIRC scripts. It's quite possible to do *ALMOST* anything with the scripting langauge. For example, you could easily make a real live-time SC Armies with it or even the Zerg Pets. Of course these types of scripts are very advanced and would have to take some learning, but it is very possible.

But enough about that, another good reason why SEN needs a chatroom is that it can offer live help to people without going through the trouble of posting useless topics in the assistance forum. Questions can be answered within seconds, and if not then users can transfer over their maps for the mapping experts to take a look at, and simply send them back the fixed map and tell them in a PM exactly what the problem was and how to tackle it.

The chatroom can also be a place where you can go just to hang out with some of the cool members of SEN. And what about if the site goes down? Sure it might not happen often, but what will you do in the mean time? Well, if you have a chatroom you can go there and still chat with people on SEN until it comes back up again. It's also easy to moderate, and comes with some of the best spamming features. And if that's not enough you can code your own spam-blocking script. You can tell users if they cuss, they have one more warning before they are kicked, and if they do it again, then can be banned. If the operators need to make an annoucement and they want everyone to be quiet, you can simply +m the channel and it will only allow those with +v (voice) +h (halfop) +o (operator) talk. So you can imagine certain respected users of SEN will receive such user modes.

So now, I leave it up to you, the members of SEN to decide whether or not you think a chatroom would benefit SEN. Please vote truthfully cause what you decide here might very well be the outcome of what may come, or never exist.

Thank you.

No... What use is there for a forum if you are just gonna ask questions online?

And from my game-related mIRC experience, people will always be getting off-topic and it won't change from the map nights (which are, too, live "chatrooms" where help is ALSO available), where everyone ignore questions...

It'll probably die in a matter of weeks...

You act as if one will cancel out the other, which is not the case. They are 2 separate ways of displaying information. Some users would much rather prefer talking live with real people on SEN, then posting on a forum and waiting for a response.

Then you must of had some pretty bad experiences. In my experiences with websites and chatrooms, I've witnessed communites come together and flourish, to become even more popular and well-distinct.

Although, you can't just put up a chatroom and expect it work right away. Everyone needs to come together and join the channel, idling is the key to a good IRC channel. If no one idles, then it will not be as effective. If you're unsure what I mean by idling it's rather simple. When you're online, simply have IRC on all the time until you get offline. I myself will have my bot on 24/7 if I can without getting disconnected.

Most people can't really afford to stay on mIRC all the time anyway... Creates a small lag and honestly, I don't see the point of having "more" members that are away or less that just aren't there (which kinda makes sense o.O )

What we need to make is a well-implimented (typo) BNet channel... Pretty much like any chatting devices, and you got the game open for direct and immediate testing/help.

I'm not VS the idea, I'm just septical about it :/

It creates hardly any lag, so little that I can't even tell and I got GAYOL. And the reason why idling is so important is because it makes the channel feel populated, if 5 people that are actively talking are there, and no one else, it makes it look much better if theres 3 people talking with 10 idle.

And I don't know if you know this or not, but the bnet channel/commands are based off of IRC and its commands. Plus a bnet channel can only hold so many users and it has so many limitations compared to mIRC.

Edit: I love how SP doesn't want the chatroom but he's in there right now chattin away smile.gif

Im confused.

Isn't the shoutbox basically a chatroom? Just make a new page dedicated do it.. and there you have it.. a chatroom.

No. The shoutbox is basically like a forum. You post your message, and then you refresh to get an update.

Plus, what happens when the site gets popular? And 5 people or more post a message in the shoutbox at the same time? It'll then completely clear out the lines that you previously saw by the time you refreshed. The shoutbox is good for small websites, but this website has no intentions of reducing in size.

Shoutbox relaods page every time you shout, chatroom auto-adds line without waiting for page to load.

Lol if you want more shoutbox space just go on the shoutbox page tongue.gif

Then it becomes too much trouble just to go to the shoutbox page, refresh and then post a reply, when by the time you do its like 10 places down.

Go ahead xD

I agree with Shadow Paladin. We have a forum for commicating when not on starcraft. It would be good if you made an unofficial chatroom to go on so I could own people in real-time, but we reallly don't need one.

i agree with yoshi, its probably a lot of work to make a chatroom and he'll waste time if we will all get bored of it in like 3 days

but i HIGHLY doubt i will get bored of it, it'll be easier than shoutbox cause im always refreshing page to read the shoutbox pinch.gif

This will be cool we if have an Chatroom in this website. Instead of going on Broodwar in Channel "Op Staredit.net" Then we can use the chatroom here and it will be much faster. If you do make an chatroom then make it so you can upload maps or sounds!

For one thing, what do you think BNET is for? Making cookies...and generally the shoutbox is a chatroom just with a limitation of 5 lines being shown.

PS. Yoshi if people want it bad enough i'll make it biggrin.gif

Alright, if you guys want a chat room, its under these conditions:
  • A new page will be created and placed in the navagation. I will not be answering any questions or issues conserning the chat room.
  • In the case that it loses popularity, we'll wipe it from the from the site.
  • KiLLeR2001 will be managing the chat room. If I think its popular enough, I will then work with him to make it better.
  • A PM link to KiLLeR2001 will be made in the page for chat room conserns.
  • If visitors keep going there and getting annoyed by inactivity or non-responsive people, its gone.
Do we have a deal?

You do realize mIRC is just a program to connect to IRC, not actual IRC? There are many others, if not hundreds, of other chat clients that can use IRC.

I know, I'm going to use trillian to connect to IRC.

It would be nice to have a SEN chatroom.
But people will either slowly start deserting it or they will get more and more addicted with it.

I think it won't catch right on since most of us go to school now and most of the time it will almost be empty.

Yes, but I'm just suggesting mIRC since I think you get the best experience from it and its features.

Anyways, for those of you who do not have a way to connect to IRC get mIRC at http://mirc.com. You can then click the link in my signature and it should forward you right to the channel, but if you wanna add it for long term use go to the +Connnect box in Options (Alt+O) and go down to +Servers, then click on add and input this information:

Description: Dynamix
IRC Server: irc.dynamix.com
Port: 6667

Then click ADD, and then simply connect to the server. If you have any questions, PM me.

I expect you all to come if you want this thing to work, so I'll be waiting.
