Secrets, one of the things that make maps interesting and fun to play innumerable times.
Use this topic to share your ideas of what secrets you could add in a UMS map, or share secrets you know that have been used in a map (don't say the map name...)
I don't have any good secrets to start the topic with
...
This could be the Secrets Database.
What do you mean by secrets?
I had some wonderful ones if people remember for Haunted battlecruiser.

WARNING: SPOILER![/center]
I had antimap hack stuff, so taking these screenshots with black sheep wall was a pain.
Here, the players must destroy the statis cell. Normally hidden by fog of war, you'll see a little passage way leading to a secert. Players will ignore this and assume that the terrain ends there, which the crack is JUST enough to fit units though

This one here, is a secert transportation location in an area that people wouldn't normally explore, but it stands out.

hehe i remember those "easter eggs" when we beat it

WHat kind of idiot would miss that?
Actually, everyone I played with did. The fog of war doesn't reveal the enterance too much, and players ignore it assuming nothings there.
Try the game yourself.
Wow... hmm...
normally I explore any side passages Isee...
I thought most other ppl did too, but bleh.
Secrets?
All I know of is;
Daegor's Rpg
Go to the area with Goliath, Dragoon, Reaver bosses.
Find the Dragoon and go north of his area, and explore the shoreline.
Eventualy you'll find a teleport that'll take you to huge amounts of 20 HP looow dmg Ultralisks that give major exp.
Wel...there goes that map. Did you not read the first post? Posting the map name ruins that part. Anyways, ideas for maps....secret characters, weapons, alternate storyline, alternate ending, items. Maybe if you reach a certain amount of kills you can get a large cash bonus....hmm yeah that's all I brainstormed right now.
Except when the secret happens to be known by about 99% of the Rpg playing B.Net population...
I use to make secrets in my newb mapping days, but now I stay away from them unless it's absolutely necessary.
In *Map Name* (I really did forget it) Theres a training place and you go really far back in the pace away from the spawn, zerglings will spawn and burrow is your not close enuf, finally when the lag gets too bad, you storm and get liiek 40k exp.. and in taht game its alot!
I put a secret in Relic Forest on my current RPG Project. If you explore enough, you'll find a hidden path that leads to a bunch of monsters that rarely spawn in the other parts of the Forest. They give you plenty of EXP. Much like that Hidden Ultralisk Area thing.
Sometimes I add a bunch of Switches to randomize at the start of the game... if they come out the one right combination in whatever massive power of 2 switches I have, then I do some kind of "secret".
I have a lot of secrets in my currently halted Ashen World RPG project. One includes changing to an entirely different character.
Bringing certain units to a location will create a hero there. Like bringing a Dark Archon and an Archon to a location creates an ultralisk and tassadar. I put upgrade secrets in one of my maps. Gas isn't used. Each upgrade has it's own gas cost. Attempting to upgrade will cause the building to be removed and created with another unit besides it.
Secrets are always fun to find, but when people start finding them and telling other people about them then it gets aggervating. I mean i hate it when you go to a website and you have like 50 secret areas you can go to in diffrent maps. Thats why when i get mine done ima hid it good
Dont make secrets that help you in the game, just make ones that give you little interesting bits of info or something. Otherwise you get an advantage just for knowing something, and the people who dont know it get screwed.
I usually make my secrets something hard to get, that only people who care about the map would bother to get. Like maybe a secret character with weird strengths and weaknesses, additional storyline, new ending, etc.
I put vent shafts in my installation maps. I don't know if that would be considered a secret, but I do know that not much people do it... I think

Well, if those vent shafts lead to otherwise inaccessible (and secret) areas, then sure. And I think that quite a few people do that too.

Dont make secrets that help you in the game,
No, just make secrets that help you a little. THat way it is just a fun addition rather than a way to easy victory.
Well, for example, instead of certain units giving you a ton of EXP in RPGs, you could do it so they give you slighty more than other monsters.
I like secrets that give you alternate endings. I also like secrets where you get stuff that helps a little, but I also put mines in some area, so people don't rush into every vorner they see. Makes people be more or less risky.
I just did some secrets for my map
They are really hard to get. One of the secrets is inside another secret, making it harder to find.
In most defense maps where the beacons are too close together, you can get both prizes by carefully placing your civilians in between and on both beacons.
