Staredit Network -> Concepts -> Possible Anti-Stealing Map Idea?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Felagund on 2004-09-26 at 19:59:17
It's been a while...

We all know that hex-editing can change stuff like terrain and stuff

Why not record your screen name as a sound file and play it in the briefing or something? Or can hex-editing change the sounds the map plays?

i dont think you should worry bout people hex editing your map. they must be real desperate to steal the map to do that. just protect with proedit biggrin.gif

First of all, if you included a sound file, they could just remove it or change it MUCH easier than hex editing the terrain. Hex editing the terrain would probably take 10 more hours than removing the sound and they could remove the sound file 6 hours ago.

lol. i would prob just stick with writing my name like

i
il
ill
illu
illus
illusi
illusio
illusion

and writing my name in the fog of war then the wav.

anti-map stealing ideas are getting old

it's impossible to stop them (maybe)

maybe we should all make our names with ASCII art. That's a bit harder to hex-edit (might be easy, but certainly time-consuming)

otherwise, just don't worry about it!

Or you can make your name have a weird character, like:

Yоshi_da_Sniper

Try doing a find and replace and type the above name of how it looks. Your browser will skip it because the "o" is a russian letter smile.gif

I'm not sure what every map protection out there does...

But I was thinking, since people can unprotect maps as is...
Why not have a pre-protection program leach out all the trigger comments and switch all the switches to 1, 2, 3, 4 etc? It'll make it a littler harder to leech things out of the map...

--> is proedit better than starforge's protection? <--

Proedit already removed all strings from switches and comments, making them default or null.

Yes, proedit is better than starforge protection happy.gif

heres is my ideas

1.use fog of war

2.make a unit with ur name

3. make a air unit (Crittter 1)

4.mission brief text

5. have ur name repeated near the Begn / end / middle (random)

But isn't it so easy to just change the fog of war, set names back to default, erase mission breifings, and delete triggers displaying your name?

get a MH protection like i said. invisible units somewhere and since they are seen on minimap with MH it might be a nice way smile.gif
btw:
-do u see my name on top?
-ye... isnt it a big 'Lisk'... damn spam
-U HAX!

But but only people with mh can see your name then...
And besides, anyone trying to steal your map will probably have already seen it.

My plan is to have my name written in the terran, covered by creep. Only once you beat the game (aka kill the evil zerg buildings) can you see it smile.gif.

Is map stealing that much of a problem? Like what, if I finish my awesome rpg, do I have a 90% chance someone's gonna try to earse my name off of it and put theirs?

map stealers like mass-played maps tongue.gif rpgs are mostly played between good friends
creep idea is nice tongue.gif

Why not just ignore the protection, and have a message in the middle of the map, saying, this map cannot be opened, please close this, and likely they will and spend ages on some hacking tool trying to work out how you protected it!

But newbs will not understand and just open it. I would protect it, and do as much antihack stuf possible. Also, submit it to trustful sites like SEN so a lot of people will know its from that person. I would do stuff for every layer. Terrain, Unit, Doodad, Sprite, Fog of War, and creating stuff or something in Location layer. Then have a lot of units named after you and messages, just don't make them stick out or people will think you are a newb flaunting your name.

Why are people repeating what I've already said in my stickied topic?

By the way, dont talk to loud about how to 'hex edit'. Yoshi doesnt want newbs to show up and figure out how to steal maps via this site.

Here's the deal: There IS no foolproof map protection. All you can do is make it more difficult and tedious to be unprotected. That's really it.
