Staredit Network -> Concepts -> Novelty - Book into SC Map
Report, edit, etc...Posted by UBCS on 2004-10-18 at 00:04:02
I say we take a novelty book and make it into a story that can be read over a sc map. Perhaps do them in chapters, show them in mission breafing. I know sc players that are to lazy to go by books would do it. Just add little entermissions between chapters and censored.gif . It would take alot of writing but it would make for a realy popular new type of map. I thought about doing it in my spare time.
Remember if u wanna do it plz give me a lil credit saying i came up with the idea ^.^! I wounder if bnet would get sued for having it on there hehe.

hmm not a bad idea for an rpg.

No, RPG's would have to have alternate endings. And those alternate ending books are CRAPPY!

To be honest, even before your post, I've had an idea to make a Movie-like map out of the book my English class is doing, Lord of the Flies. There's so much flipping symbolism in here it'll make you puke! tongue.gif My English teacher's crazy lol. But I do see the moral of SOME of the things she claimed... It'd be nice to spread it out to SC gamers, but to be quite frank...

I doubt ANYONE'd bother to read more than 3 lines on SC anyway!

People want action, not a manuscript. It's no fun to just sit there and read a ton of text, there has to be gameplay.

Well it was just a idea :S

A stupid idea that is mostly spam. The closest thing to this is an RPG, which also has gameplay. People want gameplay and story or just really fun gameplay. Story alone is nothing.

True i just thought maybe some big reader's out there would perfer to read books for free rather then spending (who knows) how much money on books u read 1 time. We'd prob get sued anyway.

You are talking about putting a real book into SC?

Heck, I was wanting to write a book. I thought - You know what? F-that Ill just make that to a movie! So here I am making my story into a movie!

ADDITION: I was wondering maybe to make some maps off of my movie, Like rpg
and play through the whole movie. Or like Those maps like LOTR-MINAS TIRITH ones where one team defends and other attacks the major city from the movie.
I think they would acutally be quite fun, depends on how you make it though.

Would'nt work; the text strings limit would run out.

Maybe you can teach your players to

r
e
a
d

l
i
k
e

t
h
i
s

So you can just have a trigger for each letter and just set switches or something.
HA HA HA BOLT_HEAD ONE, STRING LIMIT ZERO

Shame you can't place them into a single thread isn't it!

You could have lots of lines in one text string + it's not like you have no room for strings I put like 1,000 into a briefing once, maybe exaggeration.
Also the idea sucks T-Virus, it's creative but WHAT IF THEY HAVE TO GO TO THE BATHROOM?

Pause Game, duh...

However, if the said person falls asleep, nobody would know to click Pause. tongue.gif

Unless youve been playing sc for 8 hours straight, you won't be falling asleep

What about putting the book into a mission briefings? I don't think briefings have text string limits; and I could write a program to write abunch of text into a .tr (trigger) file; output would be like: wait=lengthx*book text (string=# of words^time = output*));

Or in laiman tearms: wait time is = to the book's number of words, so make the trigger: " ".

Or somthing simmiliar.

oh and, i was planning to do it in mission briefing. If only we could some how edit bnet's coding to make that play stop fastforward skip and all that stuff work. But i don't wanna get sued by bnet either. lol
Report, edit, etc...Posted by idoL on 2004-10-25 at 13:20:27
No I was just saying I can make a program to automatically make the triggers nesacary for putting alot of text into a mission breifings with user defined commands.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by gftgy on 2004-10-30 at 10:57:28
you could distribute a mod that gives you the replay option on b.net like it does in the campaign, yet others would all need that mod too, also getting sued by blizzard isnt exactly the funnest thing in the world... i know

You guys must be kidding. I mean, who the hell would sit at their computer for extended period of times just to read an entire book on a game?! People play games to do stuff and have fun, not so they can have a 'high tech book'. If you did this, i'm pretty sure people will hate it =p OH and gftfy, you got sued?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by RiShiN.rK on 2004-10-31 at 01:09:42
I don't think most people would really wana read a book in a starcraft map. I made a map a while ago that had only 2 lines of text explining exactly what to do and almost every1 was asking "this is confusing what do i do?"

But a good idea might be to make one of those choose your own adventure books into a map. It could be kind of be like an interactive movie with a ton of replay value biggrin.gif

i think the mod would be a good idea. Oh and alot of sc ppl like to read books. It would save money and like i said ide prob do it in chapters, and have breaks in between chapters.
