Staredit Network -> Concepts -> Disabling Chat
Report, edit, etc...Posted by ShadowSnipe4 on 2004-11-03 at 21:27:12
I've not sure if this is possible but is there a way to disable chat between players in a map? If so how, and if not whatever, just an idea though.

You could make a preserved trigger that always displays 11 lines of text.

But it would be useless in an RPG because it wouldnt allow the units like kings and stuff to talk to players easily unless you wanted to make a unit for every thing of text but that would be pointless...

... then dont use it in an rpg. cool1.gif

That's not true...you just don't put always as conditions for the "display 11 lines of blank text" trigger. Just turn it off with a switch (the "display 11 lines of text trigger") and keep displaying the text you need the "king" to say. After that, just change it back. Try to be creative tongue.gif

I thought that was what me meant by "make a unit for every thing of text."

Actually, the 11 lines thing is pretty clever but you could have a switch/death counter to disable it in case a king needs to talk smile.gif

Wouldn't constantly displaying 11 lines, even though they are empty cause some serious lag?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mini Moose 2707 on 2004-11-04 at 15:47:58
Pretty much useless. I could just play StarCraft in a window and chat via an external program.

I tried that once smile.gif its on a sniper like map...Ill add it as attachment smile.gif

Its an old map and it would need a lot of improvement but it was just an idea. Since im busy with my AE game anyone can have this map and do whatever they want with it (Its unprotected). It has voice commands but they only work for the player that uses it...I was working on fixing it when i quit.

voice commands? what do you mean voice commands?

well anyway, the 11 lines of text is a good idea.

Of course, a banning system is more than enough to deal with spammers.

If you wanted to disable chat, just ban them in-game or something...

Or use a death counter which doesnt take any switches smile.gif

I have had this idea before, and jeez, why does everybody hate innocent switches, use em tongue.gif

You could use for a realistic map so people can only talk when they are close to one another was how I had thought about using it, but all it would do is piss everybody off. And using a external chat program is quite inconvienient.

Na, it wasnt anti spam i was thinking of, its would be for my upcoming map, in which im having the players get seperated and also have a maze-like thing where they could get seperated easily and i wouldnt want them coordinating to regroup, and if you cant see each other and cant talk, who's gonna say that the person behind you got left behind...just an interesting concept i had come up with... tongue.gif

the problem is... even if u have a death counter to enable and disable speech made by computer... you have no way to identify when a player speaks... so u will never know when to disable the 11 lines when someone is typing. However... if someone walks up to u and you disable the 11 lines of text... another player can use that time and fit thru a msg... so there is no perfect medium for this.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LegacyWeapon on 2004-11-06 at 23:13:12
No... when it is disabled, constantly show the text that you want the person to see from the person "talking" to you smile.gif

Ironically i created a map where it advertised
http://www.staredit.net/

and repeated itself after time using a Death Counter to restart it, so that it was almost always around.

I once had basically this same idea, where you disable the players from chatting by playing 11 lines of blank text continuously. Then if you want to display a text message to the players, you just have that message display constantly instead, then switch back. It's pretty useless though, as it's dumb and annoying not to be able to talk to the other players in the game. Not being able to communicate at all sucks.

Yes... when you pause the game via triggers, everything pauses except for the dialouge etc.
