Staredit Network -> Concepts -> Very Close Terrain
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BeeR_KeG on 2004-12-12 at 16:06:14
First it was normal terrain
Then it was rectangle terrain
Then square terrain
Afterwards extended terrain came
And now I discovered very close Terrain using SCMDraft 2 0.4.X

When you are placing diamond tiles and you want to place rocky ground very close to grass but you get frustrated that there is always an ugly gap between them.

Fear no for the BeeR has done it.

I have discovered a way in which rocky ground in jungle terrain can be put 1 tile away from other terrain types and it still looks like normal diamond terrain.

Here is proof that I did it. This doesn't work with all terrain though. It only works with tiles which have some type of object on top of a common background tile.
IE: Rocks are over dirt

It's quite simple to do this. Just make the base terrain, in this SS it would be dirt. Then place any other type of terrain like grass or mud. Then you place 1x1 square tiles of rock and your done.

BTW: Ignore that ugly rock terrain at the right part, it's going to be a normal ramp but instead of dirt it will be a rocky ramp.
BTW2: yes this is a SS of my upcoming RPG which not much has been revealed, I have only shown this to SaLa.

I already do this, but for temple and grass and dirt, but I never really thought of using it to get rid of ugly gaps in terrain. It's neat.

The problem with temple and grass is that the default is completely squared so you would have to place a different tile each time to make it look like diamond terrain.

With mine you can place them freely and they still look real, and it's fast to do.

I get it. That's really neat. Because the rock is already on dirt it can be put on all that dirt without screwing up the look of the terrain.

I've already done this too. You can do it with virtually in terrain, because StarCraft spaces things really far away, so all you have to do is move the terrain closer using square tile editing.

Why is it that every time i come to concepts i see some "new breakthrough" that ive known about for a long time? You honestly never thought to just move the terrain closer together before now?

I have always tried making it closer by putting other terrain closeby and then erasing some parts. I have never done this using square tiles, nor have I ever heard of anyone using this.

Usually if you have a new idea, and it's geniunely good, someone has already done it before. Otherwise if your idea is good but complicated, no one has probably done it because no one is dumb enough to do it.

Isn't this real easy? You just need to use Squared Terran and accomodate it with the terran around it... Easy Isn't it?
