Search bots. People were always like "wtf? <u>who</u> is MSN? Why can't I go to their profile?!?!1111111"

A robot that searches websites for the text you entered. At least I think that's what it is.
Like when you are searching on google, google needs to go to your site and "use" the "find" on that page.

But google wont log in. Programs wont log in a webpage if they are not designed to log in in THAT webpage type. And if it is not logged in it wont show up in the active users section, right?

Search bots each have fake "accounts" and are treated as partial members, although they aren't one.

No... search bots run around the internet grapping text and putting in into their databases... pretty much as a cache.
When users enter text, they search that database.
That's why the bots come back time to time to get any updates.
If bots were sent out as people searched, it would take ages to get the results back.

yeah, like IP said it is an admin CP option. You can set a "guest" from the IP of a certain search engine site (like Google) to show up in active users. The blank members would be unused labels for bots.
