One of the biggest problems most map makers face, is lack of backups for their prized maps. Sometimes their computer crashes, they accidentally delete it, and so on. We're map makers too, we know its a pain when you lose several hours worth a work.

Our solution? Simple. If you want, back it up on this website. Theres a new entry for members as you can see, stating "File Backups". Backup several starcraft related file types, including maps, wavs, replays, you name it. It's only purpose is so you don't lose your hard work.

Everyone globally has 1 megabyte. If it turns out to be really popular, we will bring that number down as we see fit.

Worried about your map falling into the wrong hands?
  • Upon using this, a directory is created with a random set of letters and numbers which is impossible to predict.
  • Each directory you have and make has indexing disabled, so you cannot see what files are in there (if in the case anyone was able to find the URL of your directory).
  • To retrive the files you want, you MUST be logged in under your account. Using any other account will deny existance of the file.
Personally, I think this is a wonderful map making tool which should help many map makers out there. Enjoy!

Nice thinking Yoshi. If it starts getting full here maybe you can make a standalone script and I can start hosting maps on my site.

If 350 members use 1 mb each, yeah we'd sortof have a problem. Some people wont trust it regardless of anything and others wont put as much I figured.

Yea, sounds like a great idea... might be useful to some people with space problems and no floppies/other computers/excetra to backup their maps. I mean everyone backs them up 4-5 times like me right? biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Great Idea biggrin.gif

I basically reformat my computer every month because my computer is so screwed up. I learnt to put my starcraft folder in my D drive... but here's somewhere else I can make another safe backup. smile.gif

Just that.. 1mb is a bit small for me pinch.gif because all my maps contain music that add up to about 3 mb each. cry.gif

1MB is just a little too small for me. By about 6 times.

If your gona SEN for backups, might i suggest removing music and sounds?

I don't REALLY understand, sorry, but don't SF already do that ??
It's maybe good for people with small HDD... I don't know.
Anyway, all concepts are good ;D

My god we are so screwed when Starcraft 2 comes out.

Lol... I need to ask the host how much it'll cost for additional disk usage.

Robi.. by backups.. we mean backups that are made manually by players that are kept in safe places. The backups made by starforge are stored in the same map folders as other maps (usually) and can be 'lost' for the same reason as your actual map.

It's a kick ass idea. But, I don't really need it. My maps doesn't crash anymore, My last map that crashed on me was about 1 year ago, And now, all of my maps doesn't crash on me. Also, even if a map crashes on me, I can fix the problem, Really, you just need to know the right stuff though.

I don't see how we can provide more space without having careless people upload huge files when it isn't required. All you can do is remove the wavs, its better than having no backup. Usually you can find the wavs again faster than remaking the entire map.

SF makes backups on your harddrives. If your HDD was ever to fail, what would happen to your map?

We'll cross that bridge when we come to it :\ Besides, I doubt more than 100 users will actually use it, and your host has plenty of space on their HDDs anyway.

No.

Cool, but 1 megatye i agree is a bit small. Maybe you do want to keep some files with music as backup so then you dont have to upload it again or osmething like that.

And Starforges backup thing is very unreliable. Reason people would want back ups is because maybe their maps got overwrote by something else. That happened alot when i used starforge making their backup file useless.

People... if you have music, compress it!

Using dBpowerAMP Music Converter you can easily change waves that weight 5 megs and make your map's dl last forever into 250kbyte that lodas faster and takes less space.

You can download the dBpowerAMP Music Converter at http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

I'm sorry for my negitivity but I find this to be a increadably stupid idea. You still have to remember to back up your maps manually. And if your going to remember/think of that you would have more space and it would be quicker to copy it to a floopy disk/ CD/ thumb drive whatever.

PS. You could technacly do this with your attachment space. Oh well i guess if people like it then theres nothing wrong with it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Clokr_ on 2005-01-12 at 12:14:10
I would just modify the attach system, so it allows you to put things in a folder using the attach system instead of adding a new option. It might be good to have a place where you can post a nobody sees it, a place diferent for every user or just that doesnt show other user's topics, where you can post a replay with the description of the file and with the file in an attachment.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2005-01-12 at 12:34:54
wouldn't work because I could attach any of your attachments to anything of mine through random guessing

(No such file #2000)
Attached File _8_Terr_Instincts_v1.0.scx ( 32.57k ) Number of downloads: 6

Attached File Conscripts.scx ( 137.92k ) Number of downloads: 7

(No such file #2003)

Well... mostly because of my code anyways...
But attachmentid is SUPPOSED to work outside of the orginal instance of the attachment.

I was going to work on being able to upload files directly to your attachment folders though... but... now... 12mb is a little big for that wink.gif

Edit: I suppose there could easily be a sub option to "hide" the attachment...

You're right, you CAN do this with attachment space. However, it is not private at all. Someone guessing attachment IDs could easily find it, and you cannot put your files in folders or anything such as that.

Floppies and CDs can prove to be unreliable when you lose them or sometimes get corrupted.

Its an optional thing, no ones being forced to take advantage of it.

Well... why can't we just back our own files with our little portable harddrives and flash drives. They aren't that expensive and you can use them for other things too!

But of course some people don't have it or are too lazy to get it so I guess this is a good idea.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by IsolatedPurity on 2005-01-12 at 14:13:18
Or... use something like x-drive or yahoo briefcase... ermm.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Kow on 2005-01-12 at 15:32:31
What about haveing your 12 megs of attachment space. You can have a certain amount designated (Or certain files) to private use, rather than attachments. (I tried uploading a 4 meg song onto an attachment, but it wouldnt let me (Can we upload MP3s?).

- 'Designated' files for private use

And lisk is right, just go to freewebs or some other free web hosting and upload it there!
