Staredit Network -> Concepts -> Could this map have a Virus?

I was going on bnet late last night and I thought this map would be interesting... Only it did something I did not expect before. At the brief screen, it said "your computer is now infected with a trojan". Then it promptly made my screen black, but unlike other crashes, I could not get of this one. Afterwards, my downloads were getting slower... I tried opening the map, but it's locked shut. The creator was Virus-4-Sale. Maybe this is a hoax, but it just surprised me when I couldn't alt+del+ctrl out of it.

So it doesn't look like I made it up.

But, if you are scared, do you really THINK there could be a virus in there?

I only posted this for the people who are skeptical, and want to test it. I don't have an antivirus so... I really could not know.

I won't download it but I do think that it is imposible for an .scx file to have/be a trojan. It is probably a scam and one of those wierd crashes when a unit without a portrait or an illegal portrait is being placed in the briefing and it crashes. Breifing crashes are not the same as in-game.

You might have gotten slowers becasue other people were slower or maybe becasue of the weather, when I had 56k it got slower because of rain.

Ctrl+Alt+Del will always work but some crashes take more time than others. Sometimes my Sc freezes and I press Ctrl+Alt+Del and it can take 10 minutes to go up.

I remember a thread about this kind of crash on BlizzForums a year ago or so. I recall that it's harmless, it just locks up the user's computer. I can't recall exactly how it's done (and I wouldn't post it if I did), but it involved some fairly simple hex-editing. Like adding something unusual to an MPQ.

ANYTHING on a computer could have a virus, Anything. Even little censored.gif , like saved notepad files could, even sounds could have a virus, That's why, My computer scans everyday just in case. It scans 3 times a day, I don't want to lose all of my stuff thats why I have it scaning 3 times everyday.

I've downloaded a total of 623 files from the DLDB most of them maps and literaly about 2~3 thousand maps over b.net. I still believe that it's almost imposible to send a virus from a .scx simply because if you try to modify the MPQ it will most undoubtedly corrupt in someway or another the map and you won't be able to run it therefore it won't run.

It could be possible for a map to have a virus, but it is NOT possible for the virus to execute itself. Therefore the virus is useless and can not do anything.

Revelade, there are more than one type of crash you know. I know some crashes that put you in pure blackness.

And you know there are worms and other types of viruses that attach itself to other programs...

From the strings it has, it looks like the creator just took the map
Zone Control and changed it a bit to make it look like a virus.
Using an old form of protection, not
ProEdit
GuEdit
toGi Protector
MapSide Protector

It looks like an alteration of SF. Perhaps SF 2.2 map protection? Unless he personally modified it himself, no program does the protection like that...

No. Viruses have to be executed in order to actually do something.

It is possible to find an exploit in various software through buffer overflows, etc. but I remember researching a while ago whether StarCraft had any and finding nothing. It seems to me that you're just paranoid.

If it was just a prank... you'd wonder why he'd name it mpq trojan... confused.gif
Report, edit, etc...Posted by BeeR_KeG on 2005-01-16 at 13:46:35
Just to make the non-programer types feel like there really is a trojan in there.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Tuxedo Templar on 2005-01-16 at 14:42:07
This stupidity hurts my brain. The best you could accomplish virus-wise with a SC map is to store it in the mpq itself as a file (which you'd have to deliberately extract and run to get it) or else using various in-game effects to emulate glitching and crashing, which only causes the psychological effect for those people who believe it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by KaboomHahahein on 2005-01-16 at 14:50:08
I am sure it is not. It is impossible to have a virus in sc files.

Make a file name VIRUS.scx and see what people do.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by evolipel on 2005-01-16 at 16:48:05
People: There is no way you can get a virus or anything like that via an .scm file (and StarCraft in general). Even if it has "trojan_mpq" as a name (god some people are gullible tongue.gif ). I'm surprised somebody didn't lock this thread since it happens so much nowadays.

Btw if you're curious, a P13 map revealer in the upper left hand corner was causing the crash.

I also downloaded a map like this today, except its named differently, but the brief screen was exactly the same as what you said. A black screen came up after I press ready so I shut down my computer. Here's the name if you want to see it. happy.gif And another map that is call virus, but I forgot what it does.

Scanning 3 times a day is overkill. You're wasting your time. Do it weekly, and theres some viruses that even your computer can't pick up.

Scan weekly or alternate weeks, if your computer gets infected, you'll usually know it anyway.

By the way, SC maps cannot hold viruses or any computer damaging information. Its a bloody map. If SC maps were able to infect your computer, then the following image should kill you:

Hahaha! I just transfered a uncurable disease that just poped out of your computer and is airborne! Only because your computer loaded that map!

Comeon people :\

No. I didn't. There are many life threatening dangers of the internet that you don't know about.

I have encountered a black screen crash myself. But it was harmless. It was easy to escape in win98. Im not sure how the app viewer with ctlr+alt+dlt is in win2000 or win xp, but in win98, the top program selected is always the one you were using last. So when I hit ctrl+alt+dlt, and the app viewer was invisible beneath the blackness, I just hit alt+e anyway and waited, and the game closed. As far as I know about viruses (which isnt too much) they have to be run. SC has no way of running .exes like some programs (IE, gay.. and cant turn it off either gosh) The only way is if you used winMPQ , extracted it yourself, since you can store any type of file in the mpq, jpgs, anything. and ran it on your own free will and god.. I hope you dont. lol But on another note, a map's mpq is a excellent way to hide files... anyway uh yeah tongue.gif
