Staredit Network -> Concepts -> Color Typing in your map!

Some of you may have found out about the colored text when you type in game. Deathknight had mentioned it with a small paragraph in one of his tutorials (Moose discovered it). Since most of you read here than randomly check tutorials, I've provided a list that you can use to choose which color to put in your map. What you do is place a certain amount of unit sprites for Player 19. The number will affect the effect that you get. Thanks to Oo.Icy.oO, Joker(U), and Oo.Agent.oO for testing.

For this, I believe that any terran sprite unit for player 19 will work:

2 goliaths(or any other terran unit sprite) will make the text invisible.

6 goliaths (or any other terran unit sprite) will get you a red color.

7 goliaths (or any other terran unit sprite) will get you a white color.

For this, I have gone up to 50 terran unit sprites for player 19. I could research it some more but I don't think it would be practical in a map. I believe that placing unit sprites for player 19 for different races also gives you different colors. I can research this some more tomorrow. BTW, once you do this, the effect will stay throughout your Starcraft session until you quit, 2 or 3 weird characters will be in front of the text, and you can remove the effect by just pressing the backspace button a few times when you're typing.

Here is an example of what the red looks like:

Cool.

I get it, but why does this happen?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Urmom(U) on 2006-04-25 at 20:39:13
I'm not really sure. It's kind of how the EUD's used to work I'm figuring.

What would the point of typing in invisible text be? Is there a way to toggle what color you type in, and if not, what happens when you place multiple ways of coloring your text?

this isnt just for THAT map its for the rest of the time you play sc on bnet. its long lasting! (thx i found that tongue.gif)

Maybe you're making a silent game tongue.gif. Even though they could just delete the characters. And I don't think there is a way to toggle. I'm not exactly sure what happens if you were to say mix terran and protoss or zerg. I can find out tomorrow. biggrin.gif

Be sure to post it when you find out.

Silents games would be good for things like The Thing. But it might be bad too, depending on perspective.

Does the special colors only work when you center over the sprites themselves? Which tutorial did you originally find this in?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Urmom(U) on 2006-04-25 at 21:23:25
It works when your viewing any part of the map. You can even have the sprites hidden off in a corner that you can't see.

Here is the tutorial where it was first mentioned. I've talked with DeathKnight and he said he hasnt found any of the colors himself.

If you kill P19's units the characters will change, and if they lose them all, the effect should end. I always tried to keep this on the down low because it essentially gives you an autospammer. (In fact, that's what I have the copy of the map I discovered this in saved under, autospam.scx)

Hmmm... Very interesting. How the heck did you figure all of this out??? Very cool and useful none the less. Good luck with finding other colors(blue please tongue.gif )

So if you use one map with one color and play another map with a different color, does it switch colors?

this is great ! snce i'm a Thing map fan that would be useful. if you jam the screen with <no text> you can still read it sometimes. blink.gif

invisible would be good for comp bounds. i dunno but the effect lasts forever until u quit bnet.

Do you think this has anything to do with how the editiors have colored text or is it like completely differnt?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by AgenT_Nick on 2006-04-26 at 15:51:27
completly different. its with sprites lol. if you read the begining it said 6 p19 gol "SPRITES" lol. the only good the color thing is that if you put one color in a map and its the only color out there u can see which ppl have played ur map. but idk.

Both of you are wrong. First of all, the editors don't have coloured text. Starcraft does. It's in Starcraft's engine. Placing units and/or sprites for player 19, or any player above 12, is EXACTLY what EUD is, but more of an "out of control" style. It doesn't matter what you place for player 19, it's just a buffer overflow that writes to all players' "text box" permanently.

then how come he tryed tanks and it didnt work? lol...

Did it add three random characters in front of everything you type? If yes, then it works.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Mini Moose 2707 on 2006-04-26 at 18:49:47
It isn't random. It depends on the units owned by player 19.

The symbols are deletable
And also I got color light blue
I was just fooling around, i put the p19 gol sprites all around the whole map to see wat i got. But i was stupid enough of opening it on xtra editor and saving it and it turned to be 1 symbol and 2 letters. The ones that dont make colors r 1 symbol and 2 letters too

Does this affect only player written text, or map genertated text aswell?

If the former then I must find a way to remove said goliath sprites.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by Urmom(U) on 2006-04-27 at 14:45:31
You can remove unit sprites I believe with triggers and you can use units instead of sprites for player 19.

thats awesome! normally i have to use my hax in order to type in colour...

would this work for any Map? Being able to type in color without hacks in an RPG would be very nice..
