Changing the Tutorials Database into a Wiki is something extremely important to think about. It would certainly be far more useful in Wiki format.
You would be able to include much more information, which could in turn be browsed much faster and more efficiently.
Anyone would be able to update the information at any time, so the Wiki would likely fill up very quickly will all sorts of map making information, making it infintely more useful than the current, limited use Tutorials Database.

The tutorials are hardly ever (never?) updated.
There is a lot of information missing, and a lot of things are just plain wrong.
It needs to be much easier to add new stuff, remove misinformation, and fix errors.
The "Map Making Wiki" would be a wonderful solution.

A wiki of mapmaking. Imagine, if it's ever "completed", how amazing would that be?
It'd be one of the best resources ever. Better than a massive heap of tutorials you have to shuffle through.

Wow. This might have potential. I'll look into it...

Impressive! I like the looks of this. Once the modding contest is over I'll be sure to look in more detail--maybe even add a couple concepts I'm thinking about.

Yay, I remember saying this as an idea like about a year and a half ago. Finally it happens. cool.gif

...on second thought, now I remember why I don't like wikis. Their layouts are a mess. You'll get a table of contents with everything and the kitchen sink in it, making it impractical to browse, and then when you go to look for a list of things you need you won't find it until after swimming through dozens of links first. Maybe I just don't get it, though.

It'd be better to allow wiki-like editing to the existing tutorials DB, maybe, instead of starting from scratch. With proper backups and moderation, of course.

I haven't had the time to add any pages yet, I still have to look at the format for codes. Good job on all the things in it so far though.

I know. I was refering to lists of stuff, which often need some digging in most wikis I've used. Where's the tutorials list link on the front page, for instance?

Anyway I'll get over my inborne pessimism and give it a chance for now, wiki or not.

It's right under "Page Index"

You can customize the links that appear on left side.
Just go into your settings and add ((Tutorials)) to the "Your QuickLinks" box.

Oh, nevermind. I was looking at the "Tutorial template". Didn't occur to me there was only those 2 tutorials.

Yeah, this is why I hate wikis. tongue.gif

Wikis are run by contribution. It would really help if we had many many users. If we have just 20 Active people in the tutorial section, we could finish the structure in just a single weekend before polishing it the next.

So, I encourage registration. Yay for ads.

You know what'd be awesome for v5 is a semantic system that takes key words in help threads/posts and links them to matching tutorial/wiki entries. Just a thought.

Woot woot!
There should be a different section for tutorials and about people

So its like a wiki with tutorials and about the people of Battle.Net biggrin.gif

Could you show me an example of some spaz?
(Save the page you want to show me and spaz it up via HTML)

Could use a theme that mirrors SEN's a bit. Seems a bit foreign when coming from here to there.

IRT Legacy

ya, like Tux, i was thinking something similiar to SEN, or at least a similiar layout/color scheme

Aww, I feel important. happy.gif

But...what sort of software are you using? Convert while it's early to MediaWiki, the Wiki that powers Wikipedia. It's the best. :] Skinnable, flexable, powerful...smile.gif Do it.
Report, edit, etc...Posted by LegacyWeapon on 2006-09-02 at 02:30:23
I've tried MediaWiki, DokuWiki, and Wiclear. This seems to be the only one that doesn't have massive errors I can't fix.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I'm glad that we finally have something that can demonstrate the benefits (and problems) of a wiki-tutorial system. Thanks, LegacyWeapon! smile.gif

One of the first things that occurred to me was that it could easily become problematic when every user can create a page about themselves...

There needs a guide to creating tutorials and a rulebook for behaviour on the wiki.

But, hopefully this will turn out well as it develops and grows, especially as it's starting with some trustworthy and knowledgeable members.
